Today we are joined by Nelson Lichtenstein. Nelson is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of History at the University of California Santa Barbara, where he directs the Center for the Study of Work, Labor, and Democracy. He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1966 and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1974. Thereafter he worked in publishing in New York and taught at The Catholic University of America and at the University of Virginia before joining the UCSB faculty in 2001. He is the author or editor of 16 books, including a biography of the labor leader Walter Reuther and State of the Union: A Century of American Labor (2002, 2013 revised). His most recent books are Achieving Workers’ Rights in the Global Economy (2016); The Port Huron Statement: Sources and Legacies of the New Left’s Founding Manifesto (2015); The ILO From Geneva to the Pacific Rim (2015);The Retail Revolution: How Wal-Mart Created a Brave New World of Business (2009, 2010); The Right and Labor in America: Politics, Ideology, and Imagination (2012); A Contest of Ideas: Capital, Politics and Labor (2013); and American Capitalism: Social Thought and Political Economy in the Twentieth Century (2006). He has served on the editorial board of numerous journals and now is a member of the editorial board of the University of Illinois Press series in working-class history. As director of the Center for the Study of Work, Labor, and Democracy, Lichtenstein and other UCSB faculty, including Alice O’Connor, Mary Furner, Eileen Boris and Stephen Weatherford, have created an interdisciplinary research and education initiative that hosts conferences and workshops that contribute to an understanding of the issues and ideas, past and present, illuminating the character of American capitalism and of the working class that sustains it. The Center administers an undergraduate minor in Labor Studies and a graduate-level Colloquium in Work, Labor, and Political Economy. Recent conferences, including “Beyond the New Deal Order” (2015), “The American Labor Movement: Crisis and Creativity” (2014), and “The Port Huron Statement at 50” (2012), are designed to probe historically resonate issues and help train a new generation of labor intellectuals. Professor Lichtenstein has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller and Guggenheim Foundations, the University of California, and from the Fulbright Commission and the Oregon Center for the Humanities. In 2008 he was elected to the Society of American Historians and in 2012 the Sidney Hillman Foundation awarded him its Sol Stetin Award for lifetime achievement in labor history. Today we are joined by Dr. Roger Bales. Dr. Bales is a Distinguished Professor of Engineering and a founding faculty member at UC Merced, and has been active in water- and climate-related research for over 35 years. His scholarship includes over 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings, and more presentations, book chapters, and reports. Currently, his work focuses on California’s efforts to build the knowledge base and implement policies that adapt our water supplies, critical ecosystems and economy to the impacts of climate warming. He works with leaders in state agencies, elected officials, federal land managers, water leaders, non-governmental organizations, and other key decision makers on developing climate solutions for California. He is a fellow in the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been a professor at UC Merced since 2003, an Adjunct Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley since 2013. Previously, he was a Professor of hydrology at the University of Arizona from 1984 to 2003. He has served as Director of the Sierra Nevada Research Institute, the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory, and the UC Water Security and Sustainability Research Initiative. Today we are joined by Kerry Finsand. Kerry is a mental health advocate and ‘solopreneur’ based in Portland, Oregon. He has spent over a decade in sales and marketing roles in the hospitality and technology industries working with small businesses to large companies like Whole Foods, Buffalo Wild Wings and Groupon. When his craft beer centric start-up Taplister was accepted into a technology incubator he decided to quit his day job and go for it with his company which was eventually acquired. Along the way he experienced many ups and downs while dealing with depression and anxiety. The work he put into the business and himself ultimately helped him get through those challenging times. Today we are joined by Joanne Odden. Joanne studies insect symbiosis and is a tenured Associate Professor of biology at Pacific University. As a teacher scholar, her passion is to examine tiny things (e.g. DNA and bacteria) which drive changes in insects over time. Joanne began her studies at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where she received a B.S. in Microbiology and worked at a campus science outreach program. This spurred her inspiration to teach science. She studied the neural development of fruit fly embryos at University of Oregon, where she earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. During her first faculty position at Metropolitan State College of Denver, she developed an undergraduate research program in insect bacterial symbiosis. Joanne earned a Golden Key award for Excellence in Teaching in 2013. Currently, at Pacific University, she studies the evolution of symbiosis. Her model system is the charismatic association of Wolbachia bacteria within carabid beetles. Today we are joined by Prof. Ivan Katchanovski. Prof. Katchanovski teaches at the School of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa in Canada. He has held academic positions at Harvard University, the State University of New York at Potsdam, the University of Toronto, and the Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. He specializes in researching politics and conflicts in his native Ukraine. His publications include three books and numerous articles. Ivan is currently researching and writing a book about the Maidan Massacre that occurred on 18 February 2014. More specifically, Prof. Katchanovski is investigating who carried out the attack and if the United States and other western governments were involved in the planning with the far-right (formerly Neo-Nazi) political party Svoboda to initiate regime change. Today we are joined by Lathen Gorbett. Lathen is a multimedia storyteller, journalist and creator. Lathen recently released his long awaited docuseries ‘Bridge to Table’. Created as a way to counter the sensationalized headlines about Portland during the BLM protests and pandemic in the summer of 2020, ‘Bridge to Table’ features some of Portland’s best restaurant people who give their own accounts of what the two years after Covid first shut down the city was like. They discuss the rich culture of Portland’s food scene and the difficulty of handling the pandemic, the regulations by the local government, the uncertainty of the virus and their own economic well being, as well as the riots and the 100 days of protest in downtown.
