Growing up in foster care, and learning to set goals with my daughter Casey - S6 E33 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:52:21

Casey is my daughter. She is one of the 5 kids I had long-term in foster care from age 10. She is so brave and strong and I’m so proud of her for sharing her experience in foster care, how it’s still impacting her, as well as her parenting.    Continuously running away, putting herself in a mental health facility to stay safe and healthy since she couldn’t come “home” to my house. She knew she needed support to move forward in her life.    We discuss getting pregnant at 16 and how that impacted leaving the foster care system, and how the situation for 6 years has impacted us the next 17 and not in a good way.  She is brave and strong and - yes - I cried. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/becoming-parents/message

 Alternative Parenting, Alternative Schooling, 3 Kids, and a Fitness Business - with James Goodlatte - S6 E29 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:39:20

For 20% off James' program, go here: https://getfitforbirth.com/becoming-parents/ -I am a father to three kinds of relationships: (1)  A son that was planned within a marriage, (2) A daughter that was unplanned with a person who I considered to be a friend, and (3) A daughter who is not biologically mine, and who doesn't know her biological dad, but whose birth I attended, and whose initial years were spent in my home, and calls me daddy. -Since modern life can easily work against foundational health & family life, I spend much of my time implementing Ancient Wisdom. -Thankfully, health in my home feels rather simple. -I am an advocate of alternative schooling, and I have tried homeschooling at times. -As a Holistic Health Educator, I teach my kids to understand the foundations of: Breathing, Movement, Nutrition, Lifestyle, and Mindset. -I feel that I was a born-to-be dad, yet fatherhood definitely didn't turn out the way that my Disney mind expected, and so I've had to let go of a lot of things... ABOUT JAMES: I consider my work to be "empowering people" to believe in themselves and find what works for them.  As the founder of Fit For Birth, this is done primarily through personal training and health education for pregnant and postpartum moms, as well as continuing education for fitness professionals, birth workers, and other wellness professionals.  Unexplained Infertility, Delivery trauma, and & Becoming an Advocate with Katie Barnett S6 E25 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:44:48

We decided to get try for a baby early on in 2009. I got pregnant on our first try. Immediately imagined the life I’d wanted for forever. The baby was lost at 7 weeks. 18 months of unexplained infertility. Clomid, temps, obsession, and every month excitement ending in disappointment. I got pregnant with my firstborn and gave birth in May 2012. We thought we would lose him too in the beginning and the birth was traumatic, but he was perfect. Three babies (bgb), three natural births, completely different experiences with all. Unrecognized ppd with my first. Severe anxiety. I was alone most of the time with a firefighter husband who worked far. I felt alone in much of my parenting journey. It's hard to know someone until you have kids and find that how you were raised was so different. This is even more of a struggle when my husband was gone most of the time and came home to a family and home he didn’t get to control most of the time. I lived far away from my own supportive family and got used to doing things alone. I love the baby seasons, I thrive in the newborn stages. I mourn them still. I’m currently separated and while we are fighting for marriage but it’s a struggle. I’m full-time single parenting far from our beautiful home. ABOUT KATIE: I left a 1300-person team in February of 2021 to start over with a new company with a new outlook and a better opportunity for everyone to grow and succeed. I’ve rebuilt a beautiful team. I coach, train, and work with individuals on branding and reinvention. I focus on personal growth and specifically work with women who have given up on their goals and dreams, we can be both amazing moms and successful in business.  Infertility, Fibroids, Endometriosis, Miscarriage & Family A Different Way with Walker Brandt S6 E20 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:05:40

We went a little long because discussing surgeries including a hysterectomy - and how you really FEEL - physically and emotionally through Walker’s journey as well as navigating being a step-mom. infertility as a result of cysts endometriosis symptomatic fibroids 9 surgeries & drug-induced menopause miscarriage near death after surgery when the doctor punctured my uterus while trying to prepare the uterine lining for IVF choosing not to go IVF due to being at high risk for hemorrhage losing the battle to save my uterus finding my way to acceptance being a step-parent through most of it all and receiving that blessing ABOUT WALKER: What most didn’t know about me until March 2020 when my first book was released, AWAKEN – Discovering Yourself Through the Light of Your Innocence, is my journey of healing, self-discovery, to not be broken by but rather seek to transcend the environment of my youth. I share my path to resilience, of knowing acknowledging what is part of me but doesn’t define me and how creating success instead of becoming a statistic was possible. I am a professional actor, artist, model, writer, and now published author. I have worked in the entertainment industry for over 25 years. My work has included international blockbuster films, TV shows, and over 2000 advertising campaigns and commercials for global brands. This is a result of choosing to embrace the unknown and choose to live. At 15 during a suicide attempt, two words spoke loudly in my mind, “Stop. Leave.” I chose to listen and ran away for the 3rd time since the age of 13. Determined to break the chain I felt was trying to hold me captive as it did so many of my family members. A little over a year later, with the help of a compassionate and giving family who took me in as a runaway, I became emancipated at the age of 16.
