Humans of Hospitality

Humans of Hospitality

Humans of Hospitality is a weekly podcast, showcasing stories and insights from the world of independent hospitality – the human beings rather than the big brands. You’ll hear from the producers of ingredients and the people who combine those ingredients to bring you new dishes and drinks… and the owners of the bars, cafés and restaurants who create memorable settings, so you recall your mouth-watering meals years later. They are the people who bring vibrancy to their corner of hospitality and, who, as a group, make all our lives richer and more interesting. If you want a world of formulaic and dull corporate sameness this is not the podcast for you. If you’d like to learn about amazing human beings who dedicate their lives to making the world more diverse for our daily enjoyment, please listen. Each week brings a new inspiring story. Through it you’ll learn about the challenges facing independent businesses in this sector, from excruciatingly tight profit margins to tackling competitors such as Deliveroo and UberEats. We are exploring hospitality in its broadest sense. Farming, politics, culture, cooking, nutrition, welfare, family, business, love and more. Wether you’re a famous figure or total unknown, if you love hospitality and have something important to say, chances are we’ll end up having a conversation. We want to explore the fair production of food, protecting the planet and humanity, whilst ideally tasting awesome. It’s going to be quite the adventurous conversation. In showcasing these stories, founder and presenter Mark Cribb, wants to tip the balance back in favour of independent businesses: “Where we spend our money genuinely makes a difference to the kind of world we live in. So let’s at least make our world interesting.”

I was born in Birmingham, UK in 1981. I moved to Manchester in 2002. I immediately threw myself into the large gay community that the city has to offer, with over twenty-five bars/clubs to explore I was definitely a fish out of water and looking back I realise that I was very naive. It was not long, though, before I had made a wide variety of friends from all different backgrounds. Once learning that one of my friends, DJ Tin Tin, used to DJ at clubs such as “Heaven” in London and “Flamingo’s” in Blackpool I was very interested in finding out how music was mixed and was soon using every opportunity I had to accompany him in the DJ box. I know that watching a DJ mix from one song to another can look very easy, and in some cases it is, but once I first got into a DJ box and witnessed a sea of buttons and switches I was completely overwhelmed. After a few weeks I started to find my feet and became very intrigued by what DJ Tin Tin was doing. I started to ask questions like, “What does that do?” and, “What happens if I press that?” Over time I felt confident enough to touch and push a few buttons knowing that for a brief moment I was at the controls and in charge of entertaining the crowd. This was a very scary feeling but also at the same time I got a funny sort of buzz out of it. It was not long until I was being allowed to do my own thing, giving me the chance to familiarise myself with the equipment. Times change, however, and people move on. Sadly Hollywood Showbar is no longer with us and with no job I received a phone call from Cruz 101 nightclub in the heart of Manchester’s Gay Village. On my first night there I was incredibly nervous and more than little scared because the venue was over three times the size I was used to. After 5 years at Cruz 101 I would like to think I have made my place there and I currently work Fridays and Sundays. I really enjoy my work and I have a fabulous time doing it.

21st Precinct (aka Twenty-First Precinct and Twenty First Precinct) was a police drama broadcast on CBS radio from July 7, 1953, to July 26, 1956. It was initially a summer replacement for My Friend Irma.

The program was produced in cooperation with the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association of the City of New York and presented "adaptations from true criminal records in New York...from the policeman's point of view." Historically, the 21st Precinct had been located near Gramercy Park in Manhattan but in 1929 the Department reorganized the precinct numbering, and the 21st designation was dropped from use. No such precinct existed during the show's run, nor does a 21st exist today. However, the fictional precinct's territory corresponds closely to that of the Upper East Side's 23rd Precinct as it has existed since 1929.

Stanley Niss was the producer writer-director. The role of precinct Captain Frank Kennelly was played by Everett Sloane (for the first 109 episodes and briefly in episode 135). During episode 109 Captain Frank Kennelly was promoted to Deputy Inspector and reassigned out of the 21st Precinct. He was replaced by Captain Cronin James Gregory (1955–56) and Les Damon (1956).

Other cast regulars were Ken Lynch (as Lt. Matt King), Harold Stone (as Sgt. Waters), Jack Orissa (as Sgt. Collins), and Santos Ortega (as Lt. Gorman).

The program's announcer began the program's opening each week:

21st Precinct. It's just lines on a map of the city of New York. Most of the 173,000 people wedged into the nine-tenths of a square mile between Fifth Avenue and the East River wouldn't know, if you asked them, that they lived or worked in the 21st. Whether they know it or not, the security of their persons, their homes, and their property is the job of the men of the 21st.
At that point the lead actor would complete the introduction:

The 21st Precinct. 160 patrolmen, 11 sergeants and four lieutenants of whom I'm the boss. My name is Kennelly. Frank Kennelly. I'm Captain in command of the 21st.
Art Hanna, Bob Hill, and Hugh Holder were the program's announcers. The series was produced by John Ives; it was usually directed and written by Stanley Niss. (Another source lists Niss as producer.)

Librivox: Poems of William Blake by Blake, William

Librivox: Poems of William Blake by Blake, William

Songs of Innocence and of Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul are two books of poetry by the English poet and painter, William Blake. Although Songs of Innocence was first published by itself in 1789, it is believed that Songs of Experience has always been published in conjunction with Innocence since its completion in 1794. Songs of Innocence mainly consists of poems describing the innocence and joy of the natural world, advocating free love and a closer relationship with God, and most famously including Blake's poem The Lamb. Its poems have a generally light, upbeat and pastoral feel and are typically written from the perspective of children or written about them. Directly contrasting this, Songs of Experience instead deals with the loss of innocence after exposure to the material world and all of its mortal sin during adult life, including works such as The Tyger. Poems here are darker, concentrating on more political and serious themes. Throughout both books, many poems fall into pairs, so that a similar situation or theme can be seen in both Innocence and Experience. Many of the poems appearing in Songs of Innocence have a counterpart in Songs of Experience with opposing perspectives of the world. The disastrous end of the French Revolution caused Blake to lose faith in the goodness of mankind, explaining much of the volume's sense of despair. Blake also believed that children lost their innocence through exploitation and from a religious community which put dogma before mercy. He did not, however, believe that children should be kept from becoming experienced entirely. In truth, he believed that children should indeed become experienced but through their own discoveries, which is reflected in a number of these poems. Blake believed that innocence and experience were "the two contrary states of the human soul", and that true innocence was impossible without experience. The Book of Thel is a poem by William Blake, dated 1789 and probably worked on in the period 1788 to 1790. It is illustrated by his own plates, and is relatively short and easy to understand, compared to his later prophetic books. The metre is a fourteen-syllable line. It was preceded by Tiriel, which Blake left in manuscript. A few lines from Tiriel were incorporated into The Book of Thel. This book consists of eight plates executed in illuminated printing. 15 copies of original print of 1789-1793 are known. Two copies have watermark of 1815, which are more elaborately colored than the others. (Summary from Wikipedia) (Summary by Wikipedia)

The Morning Breakfast Sessions-A brand new, twice weekly, morning music and entertainment show, presented by your musical host and entertainer, Mike Sidaway. On Monday and Thursday mornings from 9am until 9.30am, Mike Sidaway presents an entertaining, musical set, as he sits at the piano at home in his living room and sings and plays a selection of songs from across the genres, old and new. He's brand new to this-he's only done gigs before in venues. He does not present shows (clearly).Things go wrong.A lot goes wrong:there are sound problems to deal with, technical challenges to overcome. And it's all broadcast live through his Facebook page. There is the 3-min pre-show chat with his manager and agent, Derek Chiswick (a running, dramatic, at times tearful, soap-opera), the news and sport with Bob Chambers (who keeps telling us he used present BBC Look North in the 80s, of which no historical evidence can be found),a new, special weekly-feature entitled 'The Virus And Me', where 'journalist' Adriunn Pyeulls will talk to a variety of famous figures from the world of Music/Entertainment/the Arts about the impact that COVID-19 is having directly in their life.Plus plenty of shout-outs to viewers watching 'Live', a chance to get involved and text/message/call, and musical/song requests. In each show, there will be four or five great songs, from a selection of pop/rock/jazz artists and bands from across the ages, all renditions by Mike at the piano (ah, now that's the bit that he's actually fairly good at). On occasion, we are lucky enough to be graced with an appearance from agent, manager and legendary artist Derek Chiswick, performing crowd-pleasing, show-stopping numbers from the world of WestEnd Musical Theatre.Fun and silliness ensue throughout (Oh yes, we adore the silliness, Mike-you are so, very silly). From time to time, Martin Piper, Head of FaceAche (as Martin likes to call it-'I just hope that 'the Zuck' doesn't find out, or he would have my head on a plate') 'Live' Operations from the UK's Headquarters in Scunthorpe, drops in for a quality-control check to see if all is in order and above board, (after all Mike&Martin got off to a pretty rocky start after Mike's use of an expletive term in his very first broadcast on Facebook-the word 'shitting'-got him into hot water. They since have made up-largely because Martin has heard a lot worse language in his own home from his own kids. All 'Live' and uninterrupted on Facebook thru Mike's Facebook page:Mike Sidaway Music Entertainment. And when all the jolliness is over, Mike edits it down, taking out the garbage (of which there is a lot) keeping the best bits (of which there are none), and brings to you the complete, glorious, shiny, sparkly, slickly-produced, incredible, amazing, perfect, future award-winning, finished article in the form of this PodCast.A work in progress (slightly better each show), it's an interesting, experimental show, so come along and enjoy the rollercoaster ride (ha bloody ha).All wholesome, good-hearted humour (oh Mike, you're so very funny, you kill me.No, literally-you kill me.Nice to have on in the background whilst you are enjoying your breakfast.Beamed 'Live' from Mike's Living Room straight to you.Wherever you are. You're at home.I hope you can tune in and join me on Monday and Thursday mornings at 9am.And don't forget Sunday Morning Love Songs-essential listening for sentimental, weak-minded, soppy souls who like to cry at music/films on a regular basis.I look forward to welcoming you.Thanks,Mike.
