Now most people just think that they need their wallet and they will be fine, but you DON’T know what disaster you will run into, nor what it will do. If its a fire you could lose everything, This could be a Hurricane Sandy like event, where things DO go back to normal and you will need to file for insurance, etc. You should have Photo ID’s SS cards for you and your family Marriage certificates Copies of Insurance ID’s for little ones, even babies and more Notes: A listener commented regarding something I didnt even think about, heres what she said “…Just an addition to your list of doc’s.. If you or someone in your household is a naturalized citizen don’t forget to bring your Original “Certificate of Citizenship” as it is the only document the proves you are a US Citizen. It can be replaced by making request to the govt (N-565, Application for Replacement Naturalization/Citizenship Document) but if the govt is in a state of chaos who knows how long that would take. Even your US Passport doesn’t prove your citizenship in this case even though it does lend credence.
