Released in 1960, it broke box office records in India and was the highest grossing film for fifteen years. It was the release of the film Sholay in 1975 that finally was able to surpass the popularity of Mughal-E-Azam. Based on a well-known story from the life of the Mughal Emperor Jahanghir, Mughal-E-Azam was directed and produced by K. Asif and starred the legendary Prithviraj Kapoor as Emperor Akbar. The star-crossed lovers Anarkali and Prince Salim were played by Madhubala and Dilip Kumar, respectively. Known as Prince Salim in his youth, the Emperor Jahanghir grew up a dissolute and spoiled young man who falls in love with a dancer at the royal court, Anarkali. When their affair is exposed to Salim's father, Emperor Akbar, Salim attempts to convince his father of the sincerity of his love and expresses his desire to marry Anarkali. Outraged, Akbar refuses to allow a woman of perceived dubious heritage and character to become the next queen. He jails Anarkali and exhorts her to refute Salim. Anarkali frames her refusal in the famous song, Pyar Kiya tho Darna Kya ("If you have loved, then there is nothing to fear"). Salim wages war against his father in reprisal and the movie continues along tumultuous and emotional twists and turns till the poignant end. Mughal-E-Azam won the National Film Award and three Filmfare awards—Best Movie, Best Cinematographer, and Best Dialogue.
