Summary: Today on the show our guest is Doug Booker from Booker Training. As many of the long time listeners would know one of my favourite topics to explore is leadership. I believe that it is one of those human experiences that touches us all. Think about it, how many times have you had your partner come home from work and say: "OMG you wouldn't believe what happened at work today?" I think I might have said that a couple dozen times in my life. Leadership in the workplace is something that all challenges us as humans. Be it as a leader yourself or as subordinate the challenges are still the same. As you will hear Doug has had more leadership training and experience than most. In the early part of his career Doug spent 16 years US Army as an infantry officer. As you might expect leadership in the military is easy right, you just give orders and people follow. Well that's just not true. More often than not the boss will give orders and ask for feedback and adjust the plan based around the experience of his team and to do that you need relationships. Now it seems weird that in the infantry you need relationships but its true, sure there are times that you need to give and follow orders without question but the military is like any other organisation where you need to have good relationships in place in order to get the job done. Doug says that often organisations don't have communication or leadership problems, they actually have relationship problems. So by that very virtue if you are good at building and maintaining relationships that will pass across and help you to become a better and stronger leader.
