A Pod of Their Own, Episode 6: Baseball has a domestic violence problem

Home Run Applesauce: A New York Mets podcast show

Summary: Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space. This week, we discuss the sad state of the Mets, including the Adeiny Hechavarria/Dominic Smith roster move, the pitching injuries, and the beleaguered offense. CONTENT WARNING: In the second segment of this week’s show, we speak about domestic violence. If this is content that is difficult for you to listen to or you would prefer not to hear it, skip ahead to the Walk-off Wins segment. Next, we speak about Major League Baseball’s domestic violence problem and our feelings about that as female baseball fans. Specifically, we cover the way domestic violence has been framed as a redemption narrative when it comes to players like Addison Russell, Roberto Osuna, Jose Reyes, and others, when it is the stories of victims that should be front and center. We then cleanse our emotion-laden hearts with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise. Finally, we read our favorite submission to our iTunes review giveaway and announce that the winner of the Jacob deGrom Cy Young bobblehead will be alerted Wednesday morning as the show goes live.
