Before we start, if you do not know the most important and common uses of the present continuous we recommend studying this lesson:<br> <a href="https://www.inglestotal.com/present-continuous-usos-forma-y-estructura-pre-intermedio/">Present continuous/progressive – usos forma y estructura PRE-INTERMEDIO</a><br> <br> Present Continuous <br> When we think about the word “always” in the present we associate it to habits and routines with the Present Simple tense:<br> – Mary usually arrives from work at 5pm.<br><br> – Does he always lose his keys?<br> However it is POSSIBLE to use “always” with the present continuous. First we have to remember the common uses of the present continuous:<br> – Actions happening now.<br><br> – Actions that are in progress or temporary situations.<br><br> – Future arrangements.<br> Present Continuous + Always + Adjective<br> We CAN use the present continuous with “always” to talk about things that annoy you or to complain about things. The position of the “always” is after the verb to be and before the -ING form.<br> Examples:<br> – Man, that smell makes me sick. Juan is always smoking.<br><br> – Not again. Jim is always arriving late and interrupting the class.<br><br> – Why are those children always playing video games?<br> As you can see, these situations DO NOT imply an action that is happening of the moment. It is about actions and things that ANNOY you and that you are complaining about.<br> Conlcusiones:<br> Se puede usar “ALWAYS” con el present continuous para quejarse de algo o de cosas que te sacan de quicio. Es decir. Cuando usamos el present continuous de esta forma hablamos de hábitos y rutinas que nos ENERVAN.
