Summary: TweetBen’s sons Rye and Fin in a Real World “Classroom” Ben Hewitt was born and raised in northern Vermont, where he currently lives on a 40-acre diversified hill farm with his wife, Penny, and two sons, Fin and Rye. Fin and Rye sons are educated at home in the context of a life-learning process known colloquially as unschooling. The Hewitt’s believe that contemporary, institutionalized American educational expectations create “childhood deficit disorder” and do not allow for full maturity of mind, spirit, and skills. Nor do modern public educational options offer the practical, hands-on skills that reduce one’s reliance on industry. Fin and Rye are highly skilled woodsmen, proficient with firearms and bow. They also trap and forage extensively. Ben is himself a high-school dropout and the author of five books, including The Town That Food Saved: How One Community Found Vitality in Local Food. His most recent book, is Home Grown: Adventures in Parenting Off the Beaten Track, Unschooling, and Reconnecting With Nature.
