Summary: In our October issue, we explore SHM’s 2014 State of Hospital Medicine report and talk with benchmarking experts about what its findings mean for the specialty. SHM Practice Analysis committee member Dr. William "Tex" Landis discusses how he sees hospitalists and hospital medicine groups using the report and why it will be useful in assessing a group or hospital’s alignment with prevailing practice models in hospital medicine. Dea Robinson, consulting director at MGMA which provided data for the report, talks about why information on hospitalist compensation is only one piece of the puzzle. Elsewhere in this issue, we feature part two of our two-part series on using electronic health records to reduce readmission rates, and we explore non-clinical factors that can reduce readmissions.
