The BYOB Podcast show

Summary: WHS2011 is dead! Server 2012 essentials, Windows 8’s amazing deal,AMD does it still blow? Intel 330 SSD, iOS Podcast app, WD has Routers?! Gigabyte and Thunderbolt…wonder twin powers activate! Welcome to the BYOB Podcast! Windows Home Server & SBS, Told To Go Home Well pricing skus for the new Windows Server 2012 lineup are out and guess who was cut from the team (http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2012/07/05/windows-small-business-server-essentials-becomes-windows-server-2012-essentials.aspx)? Small Business Server and Home Server are no longer a part of the server family. Instead for 2012 Microsoft conjured up something in between. Windows Server 2012 essentials. Which promises the media and streaming of WHS and the domain controller of SBS. Exchange is gone from the SBS package. Although I’m sure the legacy operating systems will be supported for quite sometime in typical Microsoft fashion, I wouldn’t expect them to remain in the channel for much longer. While ther both good and bad to this move I think it makes sense. It’s priced competitively for small business at $425 which gives you 25 CALs. but given the lack of info we’re not sure what exactly the os is. Is it a spiffed up version of SBS2011 essentials? or is it more in line with SBS2008R2? Hopefully Microsoft will release more info soon. Listen to the podcast to get the BYOB perspective and opinion of this move from Microsoft. So Let Me Get this Straight…It’s only $40? In a surprise move Microsoft announced it would sell the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade (including the media pack) for $40 over ANY existing Microsoft OS (http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/2/3132514/microsoft-windows-8-pro-upgrade-deal). And this includes the Release Preview! That’s right folks install a fresh copy of the RP and $40 later you have Windows 8 Pro. This is an insanely good deal. AMD – Anecdotal Musings Michael had the opportunity to try out a new AMD bulldozer setup recently and decides to share his thoughts about Temps, wattage, and value on the podcast. SSD Report: Intel 330 180GB Doc give the low down on his new Intel SSD (http://thedocsworld.net/intel-330-180-gig-ssd/) App Rap: Podcast for iOS Doc reviews Apples new podcast app. (http://thedocsworld.net/ios-podcast-app/) Wait Is That A Western Digital Router? Yup apparently WD is in the networking game and has a new line of routers with apparently with a stout set of QoS controls as well (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/network/routers/).
