CommanderCast #74 – Season 6 Episode 9 – Is It Blasphemous?

CommanderCast – MTGCast show

Summary: It’s a show you can listen to with your ears: COMMANDERCAST   A man who has gone deep into the waters of Canadian EDH that I’m known to tread, our guest this week is Matthew. You’ve heard him on the show before, and hopefully you’re already subscribed to his YouTube channel. It’s an awesome resource where you can take a look at Matthew’s sweet decks and also check out some rather entertaining duel play. This week he’s joined us on the line to engage in some hearty discussion and debate over various elements of this ridiculous format we all enjoy so much, and even had the excellent courtesy to bring a huge range of excellent and interesting topics. I have to provide huge props to him for that, and when you’re done listening to these discussions I’m sure you’ll want to as well.   Show notes and pertinent links below. Enjoy. COMMUNITY SEGMENTS   02:48 to 18:28: Free-For-All Roundtable: Colour Identity and Lands: Right now, the colour identity rules in Commander are pretty clear… until you get into lands. Then, we can have a Misty Rainforest putting in serious work in your Stonebrow, Krosan Hero deck. This is… well… a bit odd. It can also be jarring to see Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth in a Linvala, Keeper of Silence deck. Does this produce a strong enough negative effect to worry about? Is there an elegant solution to it, even if we are worried about it?   18:41 to 38:09: Newschool Hosin’: It’s no Boil, but Bojuka Bog is a card of the new style of hoser; pretty boring, low opportunity cost, and totally devastating to certain strategies without much chance to interact with them. Along the same lines, we now have Homeward Path, a land that works in any deck and really puts the boots to theft effects as an entire category of cards. But are these new cards any more fun than older ones? How do we feel about these kind of low-interaction, low-cost hosers? A discussion on armchair card design as it pertains to Commander.   STRATEGY SEGMENTS   38:23 to 52:25: Holding the Lead: “The best way to win a game of EDH is to appear the second-strongest.”   BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING   If you listen to this show, you’re probably an EDH Professional by now; hell, you might even have a few championships. If you’re in this EXTREMELY elite cadre of Commander players, why spend time farting around acting weak instead of dominating those peons in your playgroup from start to finish? In this strategy segment we detail the ways we put a stranglehold on a game and dominate from start to finish instead of some weak-ass comback victory.   TECHNOLOGY SEGMENTS   52:40 to 1:19:10: Wish It Was Legendary: We did this once and Matthew figured this was a good opportunity to run it out again, just for ye olde shits and gigs. In this segment we bring up some creatures that we think would make great Commanders, but are unfortunately not Legendary (for now). We did this segment once back in the day, and you can always listen to that one after this for more ideas.   Of course, if you have a reasonable play group, you could probably use some of these guys as Commanders anyway.   Byron’s Picks: Knight of the Reliquary, Soltari Guerrillas   Donovan’s Picks: Army Ants, Hell’s Caretaker and special bonus Bloodghast (ps SKULLCLAMP)   Andy’s Picks: Sengir Autocrat, Izzet Guildmage   Matthew’s Picks: Argothian Enchantress, Wake Thrasher   OUTTRO   1:19:27 to closing: Outtro: Thanks for listening!  •YouTube hub  •CommanderCast on Facebook  •Off-Color Cast   CONTACT INFORMATION  •Andy: E-Mail: CommanderCast(at)gmail(dot)com // Twitter: (at)CommanderCast  •Byron: E-Mail: surgingchaos19(at)gmail(dot)com // Twitter: (at)surgingchaos  •Donovan: Contact via MTGS Forum  •Matthew: Contact via YouTube For more Wrexial-Approved content, hit up http://www.CommanderCast.com/ Your Host(s): Andy, Byron, and Carlos Show's Email: CommanderCast@gmail.com Andy's E-Mail: CommanderCast@gmail.com Byron's E-Mail: surgingchaos19@gmail.com Carlos's E-Mail: cag5383@gmail.com
