Using exhaustive research and accounts from survivors, "The Secret Rescue" is one of the greatest forgotten stories of World War II. When twenty-six Army Air Forces flight nurses and medics board a military transport plane in November 1943, they never anticipate a crash landing in Nazi territory, or their ensuing months-long fight to survive. Cate was a staff writer and Europe editor for National Geographic Magazine and the web editor for Smithsonian Magazine. Her work has also appeared in the New York Times. Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, she lives in the greater Washington, DC, area.
