A Colombian immigrant was awarded a Presidential Citizens Medal, for her work founding a community based non-profit health center to serve low-income immigrant families in Washington, D.C. María Gómez founded Mary’s Center 25 years ago, after working as a public health nurse and at the Red Cross. The award is considered the nation’s second-highest civilian honor. This edition offers an interview with Gómez about her work and the ways in which the Affordable Care Act will benefit her clients.
