Summary: Roland S. Martin is a nationally award-winning and multifaceted journalist. A nationally syndicated columnist with Creators Syndicate, Mr. Martin is the author of Listening to the Spirit Within: 50 Perspectives on Faith, and Speak, Brother! A Black Man’s View of America, and his newest book, “The First: President Barack Obama’s Road to the White House as originally reported by Roland S. Martin.” Mr. Martin is a commentator for TV One Cable Network and host of “Washington Watch with Roland Martin,” a one-hour Sunday morning news show. He is also a CNN Analyst, appearing on a variety of the network’s shows. In October 2008, he joined the Tom Joyner Morning Show as senior analyst.

Payday lenders are companies that lend customers small amounts of money at high-interest rates with the agreement that the borrower will pay that money back. In Florida, payday lenders are preying on Black pastors and Civil Rights organizations and continue to expand their business as they hurt people. Roland Martin talks with Rev. Sekinah Hamlin, Director, Faith & Credit Roundtable with the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) about the influence of Payday Loans on African-Americans. “It’s based on a business model that goes against biblical teaching that robs the poor just because they are poor,” explained Hamlin. “Introduced a new product in Florida in which there would be even more interest and targeted some Black pastors and some of our civil rights organization but it must be noted that in it of itself it is a part of the predatory model.”

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Poor People’s Campaign which is dedicated to uniting people all over the country to come against racism, poverty, war economy, ecological destruction, and morality. Roland Martin talks with Rev. William Barber who’s carried the movement since it started. “We’ve got to change the narration and the only way to change that is to change the narrator,” explained Rev. Barber. “Roland we have 140 million people in this country who are poor or working poor…Since 2007 we have 23 states that have engaged in massive voters suppression,” for people of color.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. went to Memphis, Tennessee to fight for sanitation workers rights. He gave his famous speech “I’ve Been On The Mountain Top” only to be killed a day later. Roland Martin had the privilege of talking with Elmore Nickleberry and Cleo Smith, two sanitation workers whose rights Dr. King came to fight for. To this day both Nickleberry and Smith still work for the Memphis sanitation department and are still fighting for equality.

Wednesday, April 4, 2018, will mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King. Every year all over the nation people observe this day and use it to unify communities in hopes of making a change.

On Martin Luther King Jr. day Jorge Garcia stood in the Detroit Michigan Airport in tears as he hugged his sobbing family members. After 30 years of being in the United States, he was being deported to Mexico, a country he doesn’t know. The problem surrounding immigration and DACA has continued to rise and this situation is no different as the cry for change gets louder. Roland Marin talks with Rochelle Riley of the Detroit Free Press on what needs to happen. “Because he’s too old for DACA they decided that he needed to be deported,” explained Riley. “This is not deportation this is a prison sentence to take this man from his family. To leave them without the breadwinner.”

Dennis is the founder and creator along with his mother of Sundial Brands hair and skin products. Dennis has acquired Essence Communications to get the magazine under Black ownership again.
