People driven by envy carry a large boulder on their shoulders for all to see and touch. Everybody sees or senses it except the person who is being tormented by its consistent whisper. Envy will drive other people away from us when what we really need is to be involved in a recovering community to heal. Because recovery takes place in a community, envy ensures isolation which can lead to failure.
For friends and family of a person dealing with alcohol or drug addiction, detachment can be a difficult concept to grasp. In the context of the Al-Anon program, "detach with love" is the idea that the family has to let go of their loved one's problem. It gives you permission to let them experience any consequences associated with their drinking or drug use and focus on your own health and well-being.
When people decide to give up an addiction, they are agreeing to make a major change to their life. The benefits of such a dramatic alteration of course can be wonderful, but it will be a step into the unknown. The same can be said for the al anon. Change, even for the better, can be frightening.
