Basic Black

Produced live at GBH Studios in Boston, Basic Black is the longest-running program on public television focusing on the interests of people of color. Originally called Say Brother, the show was created in 1968 during the height of the civil rights movement as a response to the demand for public television programs reflecting the concerns of communities of color.

As of May 22, production of Basic Black was suspended so that we can reinvent the show as digital-first programming. Basic Black has been an important program for a very long time, and we are proud of the impact it has had. As audiences increasingly watch and listen to content in new ways, we must evolve how we serve our community. We remain committed to content that matters for communities of color, across all our programming and platforms.
