Byron Buxton MIN CF
Twins' Byron Buxton: Getting MRI on knee
8m agoBuxton will receive an MRI on his right knee after being removed from Wednesday's game versus the White Sox, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Buxton hurt his knee while attempting to steal a base during the second inning of Wednesday's victory. The Twins didn't have an update on his status immediately after the game, but manager Rocco Baldelli said Buxton would receive an MRI and that the team would use its day off Thursday to assess the situation. A clearer picture regarding the 30-year-old's return timeline will likely come prior to Friday's game against Boston.
-
Max Muncy LAD 3B
Dodgers' Max Muncy: Another lefty pitcher
8m agoMuncy is not in the Dodgers' starting lineup Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
Muncy got the start Sunday against Arizona's lefty pitcher Tommy Henry in the first game of the series, but will begin in the dugout for the second straight game against southpaw Jordan Montgomery. Enrique Hernandez will get the start at third and bat fifth Wednesday as the Dodgers look to finish out the series.
-
Gavin Lux LAD 2B
Dodgers' Gavin Lux: Won't start against lefty
15m agoLux is not included in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks.
Lux will begin the matchup in the dugout as the Diamondbacks start their third straight lefty in Jordan Montgomery on Wednesday. Miguel Rojas will get his second consecutive start at second base and bat seventh.
-
James Outman LAD CF
Dodgers' James Outman: Out against lefty
19m agoOutman isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's matchup against the Diamondbacks.
The lefty-hitting outfielder will begin on the bench for the third straight game as the Dodgers take on another southpaw in Jordan Montgomery. The outfield will comprise of Teoscar Hernandez, Andy Pages and Chris Taylor as Outman watches the start from the dugout.
-
Shohei Ohtani LAD DH
Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Receiving first day off
21m agoOhtani is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
It hasn't been reported that Ohtani is dealing with any type of injury, so he's presumably just receiving his first rest day of the season. Ohtani still has a 1.017 OPS on the campaign but has gone 5-for-26 over the past six games, and Thursday's team off day will provide a chance for two straight days to reset. Will Smith will rest his legs as the designated hitter while Austin Barnes starts behind the plate.
-
Emmanuel Rodriguez MIN CF
Twins' Emmanuel Rodriguez: Back in action Wednesday
44m agoRodriguez (hand) will start in center field and will bat leadoff Wednesday for Double-A Wichita in its matchup with Northwest Arkansas.
Rodriguez is back in action after he hadn't played since April 24 due to the hand injury he sustained while sliding into second base on a stolen-base attempt in a game against San Antonio. The 21-year-old outfielder had gotten off to a strong start to the season for Wichita before suffering the injury, slashing .294/.507/.686 with four home runs and nine stolen bases in 73 plate appearances.
-
Patrick Bailey SF C
Giants' Patrick Bailey: Resting Wednesday
1h agoBailey is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Bailey will get a breather Wednesday after he had caught each of the Giants' last six games. Tom Murphy will fill in for Bailey behind the plate.
-
Austin Wells NYY C
Yankees' Austin Wells: Heads to bench Wednesday
2h agoWells is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles.
Wells had started behind the dish in both of the past two contests, but he'll retreat to the bench Wednesday. Jose Trevino will serve as the Yankees' starting catcher while Wells sits.
-
Logan O'Hoppe LAA C
Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Gets Wednesday off
3h agoO'Hoppe is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
O'Hoppe will get the afternoon off after he had started behind the plate each of the past three games. Matt Thaiss will handle catching duties for the Angels in the series finale.
-
Nick Fortes MIA C
Marlins' Nick Fortes: On bench again Wednesday
3h agoFortes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
For the second day in a row, Fortes will be on the bench while Christian Bethancourt draws another start behind the dish. Fortes had started both of the previous two games before Bethancourt picked up consecutive starts of his own, so the Marlins still seem to be viewing the catcher spot as a timeshare.
-
Luke Maile CIN C
Reds' Luke Maile: Draws fourth straight start
3h agoMaile will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Padres.
Maile will make his fourth consecutive start while Tyler Stephenson tends to a hand injury. The Reds continue to view Stephenson as day-to-day, so Maile could soon be headed back to the No. 2 role behind the dish.
-
Tyler Stephenson CIN C
Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Remains out Wednesday
4h agoStephenson (hand) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in San Diego.
He hasn't played since exiting Saturday's game versus the Rangers following a hit-by-pitch on the right hand. The Reds have an off day Thursday, so they could be aiming for Stephenson to return to action Friday against the Orioles. Luke Maile will catch again Wednesday in Stephenson's place.
-
Christian Encarnacion-Strand CIN 1B
Reds' Christian Encarnacion-Strand: Out again Wednesday
4h agoEncarnacion-Strand (hand) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Padres.
He'll miss a fourth straight start due to lingering left hand soreness following a hit-by-pitch. Encarnacion-Strand has been available off the bench the last two days and presumably will be again Wednesday. He could be back in the lineup Friday against the Orioles after the Reds' off day Thursday.
-
Dominic Smith BOS 1B
Dominic Smith: Expected to sign with Boston
6h agoSmith is expected to sign a major-league contract with the Red Sox, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Garrett Cooper exited Tuesday's game versus the Giants after being hit on the right wrist by a pitch, but Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican hears Cooper is expected to be fine. Smith instead looks like a replacement for Bobby Dalbec, and he could end up forming a platoon at first base with the righty-hitting Cooper. Smith had been at Triple-A Durham in the Rays organization before requesting and being granted his release Wednesday. The 28-year-old first baseman hit only .254/.326/.366 with 12 home runs over 153 games with the Nationals last season.
-
Dominic Smith BOS 1B
Dominic Smith: Expected to sign MLB deal
6h agoThe Rays released Smith on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Topkin hears that Smith is expected to sign a major-league contract with another club, although the identity of that team isn't known at this point. Smith has slashed .263/.337/.375 with two home runs over 21 games this season at Triple-A Durham. The 28-year-old had a .692 OPS across 153 contests last season with the Nationals.
-
Christian Walker ARI 1B
Diamondbacks' Christian Walker: Walks off Dodgers
11h agoWalker went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Dodgers.
Walker bookended the Diamondbacks' scoring with a solo home run in the fourth inning then a two-run, walk-off job in the bottom of the 10th. He closed out the month on a roll, going 10-for-24 (.417) with four homers and nine RBI over the final seven games. The first baseman has a team-high seven home runs and is tied for the team lead with 22 RBI.
-
Elehuris Montero COL 1B
Rockies' Elehuris Montero: Tallies second homer
15h agoMontero went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run Tuesday against the Marlins.
Montero went yard in his first plate appearance of the game to tally his second homer of the season. After a slow start to the campaign from a results perspective, he has gone 8-for-31 with seven RBI and three runs scored across his last eight contests. Montero's production should continue to tick up as he has maintained a vastly improved 16.8 percent strikeout rate.
-
Jonathan Singleton HOU 1B
Astros' Jon Singleton: Smacks first homer
16h agoSingleton went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run, a walk and two runs scored Tuesday against the Guardians.
Singleton was somewhat surprisingly in the lineup and starting at first base despite the promotion of Joey Loperfido. Singleton began his day with a walk before coming around to score in the third inning, and he followed that up one plate appearance with his first home run of the campaign. He has the chance to see additional at-bats at first base with Jose Abreu demoted to the minors and Loperfido picking up at least some starts in the outfield. However, for Singleton to log regular plate appearances, he'll need to improve upon his .239/.327/.348 line.
-
Gavin Lux LAD 2B
Dodgers' Gavin Lux: Won't start against lefty
15m agoLux is not included in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks.
Lux will begin the matchup in the dugout as the Diamondbacks start their third straight lefty in Jordan Montgomery on Wednesday. Miguel Rojas will get his second consecutive start at second base and bat seventh.
-
Brandon Drury LAA 2B
Angels' Brandon Drury: Scratched due to migraine
2h agoThe Angels scratched Drury from the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies due to migraine.
Drury had been in line to bat cleanup and start at second base before the migraine surfaced shortly before first pitch. Luis Rengifo will slide over from third base and start at the keystone in Drury's stead, while Ehire Adrianza was added to the lineup to start at third base.
-
Zack Gelof OAK 2B
Athletics' Zack Gelof: Begins baseball activities
3h agoGelof (oblique) fielded grounders and played catch Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Gelof was shut down for about a week after landing on the 10-day injured list last Thursday with a strained left oblique, but he's now been cleared to begin baseball activities. Hitting will be the biggest hurdle for him to clear, and it's uncertain when he might be ready to swing a bat. Gelof is eligible to return from the IL on May 15, but it's too soon to know whether he might be back by that date.
-
Xander Bogaerts SD 2B
Padres' Xander Bogaerts: Gets rare day off
3h agoBogaerts is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds.
Bogaerts will hit the bench for just the second time all season in what appears to be a routine maintenance day after he had started each of the past 16 games. Tyler Wade will step in for Bogaerts at second base and will bat ninth.
-
Bryson Stott PHI 2B
Phillies' Bryson Stott: Getting rest Wednesday
4h agoStott is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels.
With a lefty (Patrick Sandoval) on the mound for the Angels and with the Phillies and Halos wrapping up their series with a day game after a night game, the lefty-hitting Stott will get a maintenance day. Whit Merrifield will replace Stott at second base.
-
Max Schuemann OAK 2B
Athletics' Max Schuemann: Sitting in second straight
5h agoSchuemann is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates.
After making five consecutive starts at the keystone and going 2-for-13, Schuemann now finds himself on the bench for the second game in a row, both of which have come against right-handed starting pitchers. He looks as though he'll play second fiddle to Abraham Toro at second base while Zack Gelof (oblique) is on the injured list.
-
Max Muncy LAD 3B
Dodgers' Max Muncy: Another lefty pitcher
8m agoMuncy is not in the Dodgers' starting lineup Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
Muncy got the start Sunday against Arizona's lefty pitcher Tommy Henry in the first game of the series, but will begin in the dugout for the second straight game against southpaw Jordan Montgomery. Enrique Hernandez will get the start at third and bat fifth Wednesday as the Dodgers look to finish out the series.
-
Jon Berti NYY 3B
Yankees' Jon Berti: Held out with back issue
1h agoManager Aaron Boone said Berti (groin) won't play in a scheduled rehab game with Double-A Somerset on Wednesday after his back locked up on him, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
The hope is that it's only a one-day absence for Berti, but that wouldn't seem to be a given. He's played two games with Somerset already as he comes back from a groin strain. Berti had potentially been looking at a return from the 10-day injured list this weekend, but that might be delayed now.
-
Vidal Brujan MIA 3B
Marlins' Vidal Brujan: Starting at shortstop Wednesday
2h agoBrujan will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Rockies.
Brujan had been set to get the day off, but he'll be pressed into the starting nine at shortstop after Tim Anderson (thumb) was scratched from the lineup.
-
Miguel Sano LAA 3B
Angels' Miguel Sano: Placed on IL with knee injury
3h agoThe Angels placed Sano on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with left knee inflammation.
Sano has missed most of the last week with the injury, and the Angels finally decided to deactivate him. He will be eligible to return from the IL next week, but it's not clear yet whether he's expected to make it back by that time. Willie Calhoun was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding movfe and could see some starts at designated hitter, although the Halos might filter through multiple players in the spot.
-
Vidal Brujan MIA 3B
Marlins' Vidal Brujan: Moves to bench Wednesday
3h agoBrujan is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
With Tim Anderson (thumb) returning to action following a one-game absence, Brujan will head to the bench after filling in as Miami's starting shortstop in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning win. Before Tuesday, Brujan had started three of the Marlins' previous four games at third base, and he'll continue to vie with Emmanuel Rivera for playing time at that position until Jake Burger (oblique) returns from the 10-day injured list.
-
Tyler Wade SD 3B
Padres' Tyler Wade: Fills in for resting Bogaerts
3h agoWade will start at second base and bat ninth Wednesday against the Reds.
Wade will stay in the starting nine for the second straight day, but his run of regular playing time at third base against right-handed pitching has come to an end with Manny Machado having recently been cleared to play defense after he had been deployed exclusively at designated hitter for much of the first month of the season. With Machado likely to start at third base more often than not, Wade looks poised to serve as a utility man moving forward. Wade will pick up his first start of the season at second base while Xander Bogaerts receives a day off.
-
Romy Gonzalez BOS SS
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: On track to begin rehab assignment
2h agoGonzalez (wrist) is likely to begin a rehab assignment Thursday or Friday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Gonzalez's recovery from a left wrist sprain has come along more slowly than expected, but it would appear he's almost ready to test things out in game action. He's been out since mid-April and shouldn't need too many rehab at-bats before being activated, assuming all goes well.
-
Vaughn Grissom BOS SS
Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Aiming to be available Friday
2h agoRed Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that the team hopes Grissom (hamstring/illness) is ready to make his season debut Friday in Minnesota, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Grissom had been slated for his season and Red Sox debut Tuesday after overcoming a hamstring injury, but he's been delayed due to illness. Boston wraps up a homestand Thursday and it's hopeful Grissom can be ready Friday for the start of a road trip. Grissom is slated for everyday second baseman duties with the Red Sox.
-
Willy Adames MIL SS
Brewers' Willy Adames: Cranks two more homers
2h agoAdames went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four RBI in Wednesday's 7-1 win over the Rays.
Adames extended the Brewers' lead to 3-0 with a solo shot off Zach Eflin in the sixth inning before breaking the game open with a three-run blast off Erasmo Ramirez in the seventh. Adames now has three homers and eight RBI in his last two contests after going 16 games without a long ball. Overall, the 28-year-old shortstop is slashing .278/.373/.496 with six homers, 21 RBI, 18 runs scored and four steals through 30 games this season.
-
Tim Anderson MIA SS
Marlins' Tim Anderson: Scratched from lineup
2h agoAnderson (thumb) has been scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Rockies, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Anderson's sprained left thumb is still a little sore, so he will miss a second straight start. The Marlins are calling Anderson's removal from the lineup precautionary, so consider him day-to-day. Vidal Brujan will fill in again at shortstop Wednesday.
-
Tim Anderson MIA SS
Marlins' Tim Anderson: Cleared to start Wednesday
3h agoAnderson (thumb) will start at shortstop and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Anderson was out of the lineup for Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning win due to a left thumb sprain, but he was able to enter the contest as a pinch runner in the bottom of the 10th and ended up scoring the game-tying run. He's now ready to reclaim his usual spot in the infield, after Vidal Brujan drew the start at shortstop Tuesday.
-
Zachary Neto LAA SS
Angels' Zach Neto: Belts second homer
5h agoNeto went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Tuesday in a loss to the Phillies.
Neto plated the Angels' first run with a 408-foot blast in the third inning. It was his second long ball over his past six games after he failed to go deep in any of his first 23 contests of the campaign. Neto has gotten off to a slow start to 2024, slashing .228/.278/.356 with eight runs, 11 RBI and four steals through 108 plate appearances. His strikeout rate sits at 30.6 percent, a significant increase over his 23.4 percent rate as a rookie last year.
-
Byron Buxton MIN CF
-
James Outman LAD CF
Dodgers' James Outman: Out against lefty
19m agoOutman isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's matchup against the Diamondbacks.
The lefty-hitting outfielder will begin on the bench for the third straight game as the Dodgers take on another southpaw in Jordan Montgomery. The outfield will comprise of Teoscar Hernandez, Andy Pages and Chris Taylor as Outman watches the start from the dugout.
-
Emmanuel Rodriguez MIN CF
-
Brandon Nimmo NYM LF
Mets' Brandon Nimmo: Getting routine day off
1h agoNimmo is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, manager Carlos Mendoza said pregame that Nimmo is getting a routine day off after having started in all but one of the Mets' first 29 games of the season. Tyrone Taylor will replace Nimmo in left field and atop the batting order.
-
Alexander Canario CHC LF
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Returns to bench Wednesday
1h agoCanario is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.
Canario is back on the bench Wednesday after going 1-for-2 at the dish in Tuesday's 4-2 loss. He's now been excluded from the lineup five times in the past six games and doesn't look as though he'll benefit much from the absences of fellow outfielders Cody Bellinger (ribs) and Seiya Suzuki (oblique).
-
Chas McCormick HOU LF
Astros' Chas McCormick: IL stint possible
1h agoMcCormick's hamstring is still bothering him Wednesday, and the Astros are considering placing him on the injured list, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
No official move has been made just yet, but manager Joe Espada said there have been conversations about whether or not to put the 29-year-old on the shelf. McCormick will not start Wednesday's game against the Guardians but is available to hit, per Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, despite still having issues with his hamstring. Joey Loperfido will instead get the nod in left field and bat eighth.
-
Frankie Montas CIN SP
Reds' Frankie Montas: Tracking toward return next week
1h agoReds manager David Bell said Tuesday that he expects Montas (forearm) to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible May 7 or the day after, MLB.com reports.
Montas was placed on the IL on April 22 with a bruised right forearm, which he sustained when he was struck by a line drive in his start a day earlier. Bell noted that Montas threw a side session Monday without issue, and the right-hander will throw one more bullpen session later this week as a final test of his health. If all goes well, Montas should rejoin the rotation for the Reds' three-game series with the Diamondbacks that begins next Tuesday.
-
Jose Urquidy HOU SP
Astros' Jose Urquidy: Faces hitters Wednesday
1h agoUrquidy (forearm) threw live batting practice before Wednesday's game against Cleveland, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Urquidy was able to throw 30 pitches without any problems during Wednesday's session. The 29-year-old righty will likely throw one more round of BP before embarking on a rehab assignment in the minors, though it's unclear when that may be.
-
Blake Walston ARI SP
Diamondbacks' Blake Walston: Recalled to majors
1h agoWalston was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.
Walston didn't make the cut for Arizona's Opening Day roster, but he will get a chance to play with the team after five years in the minors. The lefty pitcher has logged a 4.79 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over 20.2 innings in five games played with the Reno Aces so far this year. The 22-year-old will be making his major-league debut when he gets into a game and could work in long relief since he's pitched out of Reno's rotation.
-
Gerrit Cole NYY SP
Yankees' Gerrit Cole: Without timeline for mound work
1h agoYankees manager Aaron Boone said that Cole had a "heavy day" of throwing off flat ground Tuesday, but the skipper is unsure when the right-hander will be ready to throw a bullpen session, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Cole has been playing catch multiple times per week for about two weeks while steadily increasing his throwing distance. He hasn't hit any reported snags in his recovery since resuming his throwing program, but it's not yet clear when Cole will be able to take the next meaningful step forward in his recovery from his right elbow injury by getting back on the mound. Boone also declined to speculate if a return before the All-Star break is realistic for Cole, who is eligible to be activated May 25 after opening the season on the 60-day injured list.
-
Brayan Bello BOS SP
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Throws bullpen session
2h agoBello (lat) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
It's his first time throwing off a mound since he came down with right lat tightness last week. Bello could throw a two-inning simulated game next, with a rehab outing potentially on the docket for Tuesday. That could possibly put Bello in line to return as soon as May 12, if he needs just the one rehab start. He still has multiple boxes to check off before making that a reality, however.
-
Zach Eflin TB SP
Rays' Zach Eflin: Falls to Milwaukee
2h agoEflin (1-4) took the loss Wednesday against the Brewers, allowing three runs on six hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out six.
Eflin allowed a two-run double to William Contreras in the third inning before allowing a solo homer to Willy Adames in the sixth. The 30-year-old Eflin's now been stuck with a loss in consecutive starts -- he's allowed seven earned runs over 11.2 innings in that span. Eflin's ERA is now up to 4.17 with a 1.17 WHIP and 36:4 K:BB in seven starts this year. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against the White Sox.
-
Andrew Saalfrank ARI RP
Diamondbacks' Andrew Saalfrank: Optioned back down
1h agoSaalfrank was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.
The southpaw slinger will head back to the Aces after being brought up in late April. Saalfrank appeared in two games during his quick tenure with the Diamondbacks, and he allowed four earned runs over one inning.
-
Nick Burdi NYY RP
Yankees' Nick Burdi: Could begin rehab assignment soon
1h agoYankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Burdi (hip) could head out on a minor-league rehab assignment soon, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Placed on the 15-day injured list April 19 with right hip inflammation, Burdi doesn't look as though he'll be in store for an especially lengthy stint on the shelf. Burdi struck out eight over 6.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen prior to being placed on the IL.
-
Erik Miller SF RP
Giants' Erik Miller: Serving as opener Wednesday
2h agoMiller will serve as the Giants' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The 26-year-old rookie will be making his first big-league start. Miller hasn't recorded more than four outs in any of his 13 relief appearances this season, so he's unlikely to cover more than an inning or two before turning the game over to the bullpen. Right-hander Daulton Jefferies was called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday and is expected to serve as the Giants' primary pitcher out of the bullpen once Miller exits the contest.
-
Landen Roupp SF RP
Giants' Landen Roupp: Heading back to Triple-A
2h agoThe Giants optioned Roupp to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.
He'll give up his spot on the 26-man active roster for right-hander Daulton Jefferies, who was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move and is expected to serve as the primary pitcher out of the bullpen in Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Following his call-up from Sacramento last Wednesday, Roupp made two relief appearances for the Giants and gave up three earned runs over 3.1 innings.
-
Craig Kimbrel BAL RP
Orioles' Craig Kimbrel: Availability still in question
2h agoOrioles manager Brandon Hyde said he's not sure whether Kimbrel (back) will be available to pitch Wednesday versus the Yankees, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Hyde said something similar prior to Tuesday's game and Kimbrel did not appear in that contest. It's possible the skipper is just practicing some gamesmanship here so that the Yankees have less information to work with, but either way it doesn't sound like there will be clarification prior to Wednesday's game. If Kimbrel is indeed unavailable again, Yennier Cano and Danny Coulombe are candidates for saves.
-
Alex Lange DET RP
Tigers' Alex Lange: Snags second save
2h agoLange earned the save in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Cardinals, recording two strikeouts and a walk over 1.1 scoreless innings.
Lange struck out Willson Contreras for the final out in the eighth inning before closing the door in the ninth, working around a two-out walk to Paul Goldschmidt for his second save this season. Jason Foley was likely unavailable Wednesday after pitching three of the last four days though Lange's continued to pitch well in a set-up role -- he's held opponents scoreless in his last 7.2 innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine in that span. The 28-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 0.75 with a 1.17 WHIP 16:9 K:BB across 12 innings this season.
-
Shohei Ohtani LAD DH
-
Willie Calhoun LAA DH
Angels' Willie Calhoun: Joins big-league roster
3h agoThe Angels selected Calhoun's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday.
Calhoun has slashed .268/.345/.361 with one home run in 26 contests this season with Salt Lake. The 29-year-old is taking Miguel Sano's (knee) spot on the active roster and could see some starts at designated hitter and/or the outfield versus righties.
-
Masataka Yoshida BOS DH
Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Headed to injured list
4h agoRed Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Yoshida (hand) will be placed on the 10-day injured list, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
Yoshida had been set to undergo an MRI after jamming his left hand during Sunday's game versus the Cubs. While the results of that exam aren't known, the injury is evidently bad enough to result in an IL stint, which will likely be made official shortly before Wednesday's game against the Giants. First baseman Dominic Smith is reportedly set to sign a major-league deal with the Red Sox, so he'll presumably take Yoshida's spot on the 26-man active roster.
-
Cole Tucker LAA DH
Angels' Cole Tucker: Logs another steal
4h agoTucker went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and a stolen base against Philadelphia in a loss Tuesday.
Tucker got his second straight start at DH and was one of only two Angels with multiple hits in the defeat. The veteran swiped a bag in the fifth inning, becoming the second player in team history to notch a stolen base in both of his first two games with the club. Tucker swiped as many as 47 bases in the minors (in 2017), but he hasn't recorded more than 11 thefts in a professional campaign since 2018.

Red Sox's Garrett Cooper: Expected to be fine
5h agoCooper is expected to be fine after exiting Tuesday's game versus the Giants following a hit-by-pitch on the right wrist, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
It's not clear whether Cooper required any imaging, but either way it sounds like he escaped with just a contusion. The Red Sox are reportedly closing in on a major-league contract with Dominic Smith, who could share time at first base with Cooper while Triston Casas (ribs) is out.
