TED: Tristram Stuart: The global food waste scandal - Tristram Stuart (2012)

TED Talks Daily (SD video) show

Summary: Western countries throw out nearly half of their food, not because it’s inedible -- but because it doesn’t look appealing. Tristram Stuart delves into the shocking data of wasted food, calling for a more responsible use of global resources.

Alex says:

If you've ever been to a food bank, or seen seniors queue up to get day old Starbuck's pastries, then you know how much food can mean to people who don't have it.

What I didn't realize is the scale of how much food we waste, until I saw this guy talk. With just a fraction of the food we waste we could feed every hungry person in America with ease. With a little more effort and coordination we could probably feed everyone who needs food with ease.

We need to set up our community to motivate and reward people/companies/organizations that fix our hunger problem with this opportunity. If we can spend time talking about the cost of food stamps, we should be talking about this too. Watch the video and see for yourself how much food we waste. I'd also love to hear ideas on how to turn this food that's wasted into an end to hunger.
