TED: Jonathan Trent: Energy from floating algae pods - Jonathan Trent (2012)

TED Talks Daily (SD video) show

Summary: Call it "fuel without fossils": Jonathan Trent is working on a plan to grow new biofuel by farming micro-algae in floating offshore pods that eat wastewater from cities. Hear his team's bold vision for Project OMEGA (Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae) and how it might power the future.

Alex says:

I guess Nasa isn't just about space. This video show their research on an interesting idea for getting energy from algae. The whole process looks a bit like a Rube Goldberg machine.

The economic discussion at the end is pretty interesting too, the presenter says that to make the economics work it is more important to figure out integration than innovation. He means how can it be joined with other ideas that have better or offsetting economics.

I wonder why Nasa is paying for this. You have to wonder why this isn't under the DOE?
