#29 - Finding Your Voice in Speak: The Graphic Novel

Pop Psych 101 show

Summary:
Ryan and Mike acknowledge some of the feedback they received about last week's episode on Autism. For this episode on Speak, they look at the graphic novel's intense portrayal of a rape survivor's story. Both Ryan and Mike are deeply affected by this moving and real story. Mike is angry about the subject and often has tunnel vision about reporting these attacks to the police. Luckily, Ryan has experience working with survivors and is able to explain that there is no hard and fast rule on what to do after an assault, only that it is up to the survivor to decide how to handle the situation.

Synopsis: Today, we are covering Speak: The Graphic Novel by Laurie Halse Anderson, Illustrated by Emily Carroll "Speak up for yourself―we want to know what you have to say." From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless―an outcast―because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. Through her work on an art project, she is finally able to face what really happened that night: She was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her. Survivor Resources: RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network) NSVRC (National Sexual Violence Resource Center) SurvJustice End Rape On Campus

Find Us:

Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101

We have a Blog!

Ryan always had a Blog!

Join our support group

Facebook

Twitter

Instagram
--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/poppsych101/message
