This week you chose John Carpenters The Thing 1982You had your choice between Jurassic Park, TMNT II: Secret Of The Ooze or John Carpenters The Thing. John Carpenter was panned by critics and audiences alike who weren't ready for the in your face practical effects and the expertly depicted body horror jump scares littered throughout this masterpiece of horror and suspense. While we can appreciate the genius in this film now, the backlash upon release had a long term effect on John Carpenters career and ultimately made him somewhat bitter towards the film industry as a whole. This film stands against the test of time defiantly as proof of when we all let a legendary film maker down and a reminder of what we could have missed out on for being so quick to dismiss a film.While you listen don't forget to cast your vote for which movie we review next! James joined the gang on our first listener voted episode pick. TMNT may not have had the biggest stars, greatest director or biggest budget at 13 million dollars, but what it liked in money and star power it made up for with an amazing Intellectual property and the master puppetry of the late great Jim Henson. This little movie changed the way we looked at superhero movies forever. With a great mix of humor and grit TMNT stays with you long after you watch it looks amazing 32 years later, better then some coming out today with half a billion dollar budgets and the biggest actors. While it was fun to watch and reminisce on this classic it's important not to forget the most underrated sequel in history. This week Bob had us revisit the 1986 romance / drama Crossroads. Directed by Walter Hill and written by John Fusco. Crossroads is an exemplary showcase of southern blues that would make a fantastic family film but was unfortunately hidden inside a rated R release that most fans of Ralph Macchio from The Karate Kid weren't allowed to see in theaters. This week Dustin chose Get Shorty to sprinkle some Travolta on the podcast. This comedy adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel stars John Travolta as Chili Palmer a Loan shark out of Miami working for Dennis Farina's Ray 'Bones' Barboni on the trail of David Paymers Leo Devoe, a drycleaner who faked his death to get out of his debt to the loan shark. Starring Denzel Washington as a former homicide investigator now handicapped, Lincoln Rhyme, Angelina Jolie as police officer Amelia Donaghy, Queen Latifa as Thelma Lincoln's full time nurse, Michael Rooker as Cpt. Howard Cheney with phenomanal supporting cast made up of Michael Mcglone, Luis Guzmon, and Ed O'neill. Phillip Noyce directed this crime thriller. Mac Elliot, Richard Chaves as Jorge "Poncho" Ramirez, Sonny Landham as Billy Sole, Shane Black as Rick Hawkins" Elpidia Carrillo as Anna Gonsalves, Kevin Peter Hall as The Predator / Helicopter pilot, and Peter Cullin as the voice of the Predator. John McTeirnan's first time directing a studio film that went on to become a nearly perfect musclefest jungle battle. This week Bob starts the new year off right with his pick from 1981 Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg this brainchild of George Lucas changed the way the world saw the action-adventure genre. Indiana Jones is expertly portrayed on screen by a young Harrison Ford fresh off of The Empire Strikes Back, his performance however is anything but frozen in carbonite. He is joined by Karen Allen making her second appearance on this podcast after last episodes Scrooged. This week we went back to 1982 for Bobs pick Poltergeist. This film manages to pull off the near impossible feat of a PG family horror film that scares children and adults to this day. Written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais and Mark Victor and directed by Tobe Hooper (a credit that seems to be debated to this date) The movie is brought to life with the acting talents of Jobeth Williams as Diane Freeling, Craig T. Nelson as father Steven Freeling accompanied by the amazing child actors Dominique Dunne as Dana, Oliver Robbins as Robbie and the adorable Heather O'Rourke as Carol Anne. The Freelings' start noticing strange events in their home. It quickly becomes clear there is a haunting but where at first the spirits appear friendly and  mischievous things soon turn more sinister until the youngest of the freelings is abducted by the spirits causing the Freelings to enlist the aid of Dr Lesh played by Beatrice Straight and psychic Tangina lovingly portrayed by Zelda Rubenstein.Working with a modest budget of under 11 million this film managed to slay the competition at the box offices when it hit theaters on June, 4th 1982 bringing in a whopping 121.7 million dollars.Movies Against Time is a bi-weekly film retrospective podcast hosted by married couple Sylvia and Dustin along with long time friend Bob.
