It’s all part of a geopolitical balancing act regarding Turkey's intervention in Syria, on the opposite side to Russia. Turkey-US relations have been strained by the case of an evangelical pastor and Turkey's buying of Russian weapons. The EU and Turkey agreed a deal in 2016, but Turkey says the EU hasn't held up its side. Accession talks for Turkey to join the EU have been stalled for years.
