The Stable: Justin Houston, Clayton Geathers, and FA Impact on the Draft | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2189

Free Agency is starting to wind down as most of the top targets are off the board. However, the Colts are just heating up. This is Ballards favorite time to start getting aggressive as he believes he can find some diamonds in the rough or proven veterans on good deals. This year the diamond in the rough might be Devin Funchess. The proven veteran ? Well we just got our answer. The Colts went out and signed Justin Houston from the Kansas City Chiefs to a 24 million dollar deal over two years. It is the perfect example of why we need to have some faith and trust in Ballard. Justin Houston was a 3-4 outside linebacker but will play 4-3 DE with the Indianapolis Colts. While some may think this is an issue I believe that Houston will excel and fit perfectly in his new spot. If Houston can get back to double digit sacks and stay healthy he is an important addition to an already stout defensive line here in Indianapolis. Check out Zachary Hicks article for a film breakdown of Houston. The Colts also brought back Clayton Geathers on a one year prove it deal. The media got tired of mocking the Colts a CB and switched to mocking us a safety. I don’t necessarily disagree but with Farley and Geathers back on the team I am not sure it is such a high need anymore. The Colts have added a defensive end, a wide receiver and re-signed many of their own at key positions. It makes the question of what is the Colts biggest need less clear. The Colts could go best player available and many of us would still be happy.  I tackle the Colts biggest needs and Indy Star’s Zach Keefer chimes in on his thoughts about the Colts moves.  The Stable: How to feel about free agency | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2355

Every year the week before free agency people begin to make their wishlist. They want every 5 star player to come join the Colts and at discounted prices. This year the big names were Trey Flowers, Landon Collins and Le’Veon Bell. Although Ballard has preached that he does not like free agency, our 100 million dollars of cap space was too enticing not to dream about. As you might expect, like normal the Colts did not go out and make the splashy signings. Instead they remained as quiet as a mouse making only some re-signings and bringing in Devin Funchess from the Carolina Panthers. Funchess could not feel any more like a Chris Ballard signing.  The 6’4” wide receiver looks to add an element that the Colts have been searching for over the last 8 years. He adds length and size to help spread the field from the speedy T.Y. Hilton. We saw what someone with size and athletic ability could do in Eric Ebron last year and Ballard has gone out and added another big body to help this offense. I would not be surprised to see Funchess explode onto the scene and have a career year with the Colts. Desir, Hunt, Glow, all familiar names to Colts fans and all back with the Colts. You could feel the excitement from the team as their old teammates return for another year. The locker room here in Indy is something to be excited about and something to be proud of. Ballard has done a good job at bringing in players he feels want to win and will fit the locker room. Ballard has a plan and he is sticking to it which is something that I believe goes under the radar. Ballard is not going for the splashy signings instead he is busy building a winner and a monster to fear here in Indy. George Bremmer of the Herald Bulletin joins me to discuss the Colts free agency strategy and what the impact of our signings has on our team and the coaching staff.  Colts Cast: Colts largely quiet to start free agency; Who'd they miss, and intriguing available options | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2771

Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts could not be more different than the days of the previous regime. For some fans it's too drastic of a flip in philosophy. For others, preaching patience to an eager fanbase becomes a common retort to those on the other side of the fence. `Once again, the Colts have largely been quiet in the early stages of free agency. They've re-signed Chris Milton, signed Pierre Desir to a 3-year deal, and though it hasn't been officialized by the team to this point, they have reportedly agreed to terms with WR Devin Funchess.  Meanwhile, there are a few teams who have scooped up a litany of available talent in the first official 24 hours of free agency. The Packers, Jets, Bills, Titans, and Raiders have all been quite active thus far. As a result, most of those players many theorized would land in Indy have signed elsewhere.  There is absolutely a healthy second tier of available free agents that the Colts could bring in some great additions to make their roster better overall, so people shouldn't be stepping out onto that ledge quite yet. Luke Schultheis joins Matt Danely today to discuss all of the above. They talk about who the Colts have signed, and what they think of the moves, who slipped through their grasp, as well as some names to keep your eyes on in the days ahead.  The Stable: NFL Combine Review, Free Agency Wishlist, and Heather Lloyd | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2800

First up on The Stable I speak with Colts.com writer Heather Lloyd, you can find most of her stuff on ‘The Colts Roundup’, she can also be found on twitter @TheBlueMare. Heather takes a deep dive into a season review, she tells me who really stepped up to lead the Colts behind the scenes. She shares some stories about locker room personalities and gives us an insight into the player’s fashion. A great interview as always I encourage you not to miss out. The NFL Scouting Combine just wrapped up this week here in Indianapolis. While some players stood out others seemed to crash and burn and hurt their overall draft stock. The best thing to do after the Combine is go back and watch more tape on players you may not have looked carefully enough at. I took a second look at some of the players who impressed me at this years combine like A.J. Brown, Miles Boykin, Montez Sweat and Amani Oruwariye. I put together my list based on who the Colts should be targeting in this years draft. Of course there were also some disappointments that I had high on my draft board. Deandre Baker and Riley Ridley are good examples.  Free Agency is right around the bend. There are a lot of Colts players that have yet to be re-signed and some future Colts waiting to be signed. With names like Dontrell Inman, Matthias Farely, Landon Collins, and Trey Flowers there are a lot of interesting choices that Ballard may make in Free Agency. Listen in for my free agency wish list!  Colts Cast: Rookie UDFA year in review with Colts' safety George Odum | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2763

The 2018 season was filled with rookie contribution for the Indianapolis Colts. Most will attribute that to the draft picks, but there were plenty of UDFA assistance to a surprisingly successful year for the Colts as well.  Today, Zach Hicks joins Matt Danely as they talk to Colts' safety, and UDFA George Odum. Odum was part of an everchanging roster, and safety position for the Colts in 2018. We saw T.J. Green shown the door, and Matthias Farley lose out on most of the season due to injury.  Odum became a vital part of a safety corps that also gained influential veteran Mike Mitchell, and was a key position in the success of a very young defense. Odum was an excellent special teams contributor, and was third at the position in total tackles despite only starting two games for the Colts. Odum looks to possibly be a long-term piece in a defense going through a massive youth movement in Chris Ballard's third full season as GM.  Making his second season that much more interesting is the Colts' situation at safety. Most of the 2018 safety group are free agents, and the team could very well be in the hunt for an unquestioned starter opposite Malik Hooker. Odum isn't worried about all of that though. Odum is quite confident in his abilities, his willingness to work harder than anyone else, and the fact that he cherishes every opportunity he gets on the field. Odum was a fun interview, and was candid about his outlook to being in the NFL and doesn't rely on a chip on his shoulder from being an UDFA. He feels that he belongs in the NFL, and has everything he needs to remain a success in the league with his diverse skillset. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Colts Cast: Pat McAfee talks "Naturdays," his star rising, and the Colts approach to the 2019 season | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1098

Today we take a quick break from breaking down 2019 NFL Draft options, the Indianapolis Colts' roster review and the NFL Combine to talk with one of the greatest Colts to ever don the horseshoe. Former Colts' punter Pat McAfee joins Matt Danely on the Colts Cast for a quick conversation on multiple fronts. Pat discusses his latest gig in being named the spokesman for Natural Light's "Naturdays" where every moment can become a story, how his name has continued to be attached to the recent opening for Monday Night Football, his rise with the WWE, the Colts' approach to 2019, and much more. Pat has quickly become a household name beyond the Colts' fanbase as he notoriously retired from the NFL to pursue his love for the entertainment industry. In just a short run post-NFL, Pat has earned a contract with the WWE, commentated a college and NFL football game, and has become one of the most recognized podcast hosts in the game. Additionally, Pat's star has only brightened as his opportunities have increased and is getting a real push by the Colts, and other national media to receive additional media gigs. We'd like to thank Pat for his time, and we hope you enjoy today's show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Colts Cast: Looking to the NFL Draft with Zach Hicks | Receivers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2923

The Indianapolis Colts are preparing for a critical point in their roster rebuild and the 2019 NFL Draft may be the most important of Chris Ballard's time in Indy to this point. Today we continue our look at the team's needs heading into the offseason, and now we move on to the receiver class. This class of pass catchers is extremely fun and interesting to talk about. The class offers a deep field, with the potential for some of them to really break out at the next level, but at the current time, there aren't too many that could be pegged as true game changers. There are some big-bodied receivers, quick and quality route runners, as well as a handful with long speed to offer the deep threats that NFL teams just love to take a bit higher than they might otherwise be drafted. There is also an interesting group of slot receivers who could offer a needed aspect to the Colts' offense that they have yet to have under Frank Reich. Zach Hicks joins Matt Danely once again today, and the two discuss D.K. Metcalf, Kelvin Harmon, N'Keal Harry, Marquise Brown, Andy Isabella, Deebo Samuel, Riley Ridley and many more as they discuss the top of the position, the depth, the overrated and underrated talent, those who can offer possession traits as well as those who can complement T.Y. Hilton as a deep threat. The Colts need a legit No. 2 WR in one way or another for the 2019 season. Whether or not that becomes Deon Cain, a free agent acquisition, or one of these talents out of the draft, but they also truly need a viable slot weapon. This could quite easily be one of the most improved positions in 2019 if things go well. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Colts Cast: Looking to the NFL Draft with Zach Hicks | Cornerbacks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2460

We continue to take a look ahead at the 2019 NFL Draft class as the Indianapolis Colts await Chris Ballard's third pull as the team's GM. Last we looked through the safety class, and today we'll take a look at the other pieces of the secondary as the Colts need to boost their cornerback corps. Zach Hicks comes back to the show to give us the low down on this year's group which could be a key position to watch in late April. There's a diverse group of corners in this class with a very interesting mix of size, speed, and skillsets to sift through. The Colts have an interesting situation heading into the draft with Pierre Desir requiring a decision from the organization. Either way, the Colts will have to look at the position in order to continue their move towards getting younger and more effective in the second year of their new defensive scheme. Depending on what the Colts decide to do through free agency may very well play into how they approach the position in the draft, and whether they take a project or decide to look for the top-end players at the position. Zach tells us what we need to know about such prospects as Greedy Williams, Byron Murphy, DeAndre Baker and some of the others atop the position, as well as the overrated and underappreciated from this class.  Who's the best zone corner? Who is Zach's top corner at this point? We discuss that and much more on today's show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Colts Cast: Looking to the NFL Draft with Zach Hicks | Safeties | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2256

The Indianapolis Colts are just like every other team in the NFL at the moment as the NFL Combine is just a week away. Though the NFL Draft is a couple months out, we're going to start looking at this class in preparation for this pivotal offseason for the Colts. The Indianapolis Colts have several needs that they'll hope to address this offseason, and it seems as though they should be able to cover several of them between free agency and the draft given that they have a ton of money to use, and a solid amount of youth to be built upon across the roster. One of those needs, with several at the position set to be free agents, is undoubtedly the safety position. With that, our own Zach Hicks joins Matt Danely today to dig in to the 2019 safety class. Maybe the Colts re-sign either Matthias Farley or Clayton Geathers, or both, and don't really have much of a hole at the position. On the other hand, maybe they don't and move towards adding one of the top free agents at the position in Landon Collins or Adrian Amos and choose to go to the draft for their depth along with some of their spot players on last year's roster.  Should they decide to, you're going to want to listen to what Zach has to say on this class. We get an idea of who possesses the instincts, who's a downhill thumper, who's better than their current draft stock and who may be getting pumped up a bit more than they probably should. Zach and Matt go in on that and much more on today's show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Colts Cast: Positional review heading into the offseason | Safety | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2051

Today we finish up with our look at the Indianapolis Colts position by position review with the safety corps as they head into this pivotal offseason.  With the safety group bringing up the caboose in this series, it also happens to be one of the most interesting of all of the units on the roster. The Colts have several in-house free agents, including Clayton Geathers and Matthias Farley, as well as some of the team's depth pieces from the 2018 season.  The Colts have a decent tertiary group of safeties throughout the roster who aren't free agents at this time, and also will have their piece at the position in which they'll hope to build around on the backend of the defense -- Malik Hooker. It's reasonable to think that either Geathers or Farley could in fact be re-signed previous to free agency being kicked off as they've both been successful in their own ways, and offer redeemable skill sets going forward. Both have dealt with injury issues as of late, but with a scheme needing a healthy group of diversity, it's even possible that they both return to the horseshoe in 2019. On the other hand, there are a ton of capable safeties throughout the NFL who are set to become free agents at the end of the league year as well. Landon Collins headlines the group for the most part, Adrian Amos is another intriguing name out there, but they could both easily be re-signed by their respective teams as well.  There are others out there who have drawn interest from the Colts recently like Tre Boston and Kenny Vacarro, but the safety group overall is a deep one to dig in to in free agency. Either way, it'll be one of the most interesting positions to watch for the Colts going forward previous to the NFL Draft in April. Learn more about your ad choices.  Colts Cast: Positional review heading into the offseason | Cornerbacks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1601

We're finishing up our positional reviews for the Indianapolis Colts heading into this pivotal offseason, and today we hit on the team's cornerbacks. This could be one of the positions in which we see the most action at for the Colts. Chris Ballard knows that he needs a true No. 1 at cornerback, but there's little doubt that he also likes the youth that the team has with possible starters, as well as depth. Kenny Moore was one of the brightest spots among the corners, but they felt as though Quincy Wilson is a talent that can still grow within this 4-3, Tampa-2 scheme, and they definitely like what Jalen Collins showed them in his time on the practice squad this season. On the other hand, Pierre Desir and Chris Milton are the Colts' only two free agents. Desir played very well, and Milton is almost exclusively a special teams contributor. So what do the Colts do with these two? Desir should get some real consideration from the team, but Milton is likely just a depth signing if anything. There are plenty of free agents throughout the NFL who could give the Colts what they need in terms of finding potential starters as well as adding to the depth at the position. The draft will also offer some quality for the Colts to consider, we'll discuss Ballard's likelihood of adding pieces in all aspects of the offseason. Learn more about your ad choices.  Colts Cast: Positional review heading into the offseason | Linebackers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1925

As we continue into the Indianapolis Colts pivotal offseason, we move into the team's linebacker corps to see where the position stands for the 2019 season. The unit showed a massive improvement this past season with the addition of All-Pro rookie Darius Leonard, some great improvement out of Anthony Walker, as well as a couple other rookie additions in Matthew Adams and Zaire Franklin. With some initial leadership assistance from Najee Goode, the unit went from one of the worst positions in 2017 to one of the better groups in the league in the AFC in 2018. In spite of their improvements, Colts' GM Chris Ballard is not one to sit on any position group and become satisfied with what they've achieved. Each position can always be upgraded, more competition in training camp will be added one way or another, and there are several NFL free agents sitting out there who could do that at the bare minimum. There's little doubt that Leonard will be the starting WILL next season, but are the MIKE, and SAM spots locked up? I don't think so. Walker was very good in 2018, but could someone unseat him, moving him to a possible role as the defense's SAM? Maybe. We'll discuss. The bottom line is that Ballard, Frank Reich, and Matt Eberflus want to see the most competitive defense that they can build, and virtually nobody is safe from going from a starter, or key depth piece to being on the outside looking in in 2019 if the team can find a way to get better.  Today Matt Danely looks at each role in the linebacker corps, what they have in the way of free agents, whether they should be re-signed, and what the rest of the NFL brings in terms of possible additions to the Colts' defense.  Learn more about your ad choices.
