San Francisco Giants Hall of Fame Talk: Barry Bonds, Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2442

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick joins Locked On Diamondbacks host Millard Thomas to discuss all things San Francisco Giants Hall of Fame. With Barry Bonds falling off the ballot recently, Ben and Millard discuss the writers keeping him out of Cooperstown, and if it makes sense. They talk about David Ortiz getting in on the first ballot despite him reportedly testing positive for a PED in 2003. The process doesn't appear to be fair at all, and Ben's opinion is that we don't know who was using and who wasn't, so the writers really shouldn't pick and choose based on suspected PED use. Ben and Millard also talk about the careers of Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain. Lincecum, of course, burst onto the scene in the late 2000s and quickly became the best pitcher in the game. He won back-to-back Cy Young Awards in 2008 and 2009, and he looked to be on a Hall of Fame trajectory. But then his career went sideways in a hurry. Ben explains to Millard that Lincecum quickly and consistently lost velocity on his fastball due to hip issues, and once the velocity was diminished everything fell apart. Similarly, Matt Cain was a solidly above-average pitcher for many years for the Giants, yet he abruptly fell off a cliff around the same time as Lincecum. Ben adds that Cain also dealt with numerous injuries and diminished velocity during his decline. Finally, the two talk about the Hall of Fame candidacies of Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey, both of whom probably have a better shot than Lincecum or Cain. Ben believes Bumgarner is probably not a Hall of Famer, but that Posey will be the one player to get in for the Giants this century, despite having so much individual and team success since 2000.  Buster Posey to retire | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1769

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the news that Buster Posey has decided to retire after 12 major league seasons. He leaves the game as one of the best catchers of all time, and he should be in line for induction into Cooperstown one day. Posey changed the Giants from the minute he burst onto the scene in 2010, a year in which he ultimately won Rookie of the Year and led the Giants to their first ever championship in San Francisco. Two years later, he was the MVP and he won another ring. Two years after that, another ring. All the while, Posey just kept on being one of the best players in baseball. Since his debut in 2009, only Mike Trout has amassed more FanGraphs wins above replacement. Hall of Fame guru Jay Jaffe considers Posey a lock for induction one day. Ben relives some of the best moments of Posey's career, from the rings to Matt Cain's perfect game to the grand slam off Matt Latos in 2012 NLDS Game 5. Posey won multiple Silver Sluggers, was selected to seven All-Star teams (and was snubbed a few more times), won a Gold Glove, and was Comeback Player of the Year twice. It will be hard to find a more decorated career in baseball history. Finally, Ben attempts to turn the page to what comes next for San Francisco. They've been so fortunate to be able to write Posey's name into the lineup most days for 12 years, but that's no longer an option. The team has one more year of control over Curt Casali, who can be retained for roughly $2M if the club so desires. The free agent market for catchers is bleak. There are some possible trade candidates, and of course Joey Bart is waiting in the wings. Ben is still not convinced that Bart is ready following his difficult-to-watch debut season in 2020. Bart's struggles, despite being considered one baseball's best prospects, is a perfect illustration of how truly special Posey was. He couldn't have been much better, and the franchise couldn't have been more fortunate to have him wear the orange and black for his entire career, from start to finish.  San Francisco Giants 2021-22 Offseason Primer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1703

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the key dates and deadlines for the San Francisco Giants' 2021-22 offseason. Things kick off with a five-day window during which time teams and players must make decisions on options and opt-outs, and teams must decide who among their eligible players to tag with the qualifying offer. The Giants hold club options over Buster Posey, Johnny Cueto, Wilmer Flores, and José Álvarez, and Ben expects the Giants to pick up the options for all but Cueto. Posey is a possible extension candidate, and there is a possibility he could choose to retire. The club also must decide whether to tag Brandon Belt, Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Wood (the only three realistic candidates) with the one-year, $18.4M qualifying offer. Once the deadline for all of that activity passes on Sunday, free agency officially kicks off on Monday, Nov. 8. Ten days from Nov. 7, players must decide whether to accept or reject teams' qualifying offers. Two days later, on Nov. 19, teams must add eligible players to their 40-man roster if they want to protect them from selection in the Rule 5 Draft, which is scheduled to take place in early December. The Giants have several of their better prospects eligible for selection, including Heliot Ramos, Sean Hjelle, and Seth Corry. The biggest deadline of all comes on Dec. 1 at 11:59 PM Eastern, when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire. If MLB and the MLBPA don't reach an agreement on a new CBA by that time, the league may institute a lockout and a transactions freeze. All major-league dates and deadlines thereafter could be put on hold until a new CBA agreement is reached. That would affect the tender deadline, free agency, trades, and the Winter Meetings.  Inbox: Should the Giants bring back Adam Duvall? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1858

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the San Francisco Giants' offseason. Among the questions asked and answered are: Thoughts on the Giants going for one of the four Braves outfielders if they don't re-sign? Eddie Rosario and Jorge Soler are free agents; Adam Duvall and Joc Pederson have options. Why haven’t the Giants extended Gabe Kapler? Isn’t his contract up next year? Never want a lame duck manager. Seems the Giants would be smart to try to extend Farhan Zaidi too, while they’re at it. How is a potential universal designated hitter going to change the Giants off-season plans? Do you think the idea of the Giants having to overpay hitters to lure them to the Bay are finally over with, now that they led the league in HR? More likely to come back: Brandon Belt or Kris Bryant. Who would you rather have? Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTube BONUS CONTENT: https://bit.ly/BenKaspickYouTube Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  Tommy La Stella undergoes left Achilles surgery | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1566

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. Tommy La Stella, who received the largest contact handed out by Farhan Zaidi in San Francisco last offseason, had a disappointing first season in San Francisco. He was injured several times, and most recently his left Achilles bothered him down the stretch and kept him out of some key games. He met with a specialist last week, and ultimately ended up having surgery. He is expected to be back at full strength in four months, but you never know with these things. The Giants may need additional insurance at second base, as Donovan Solano is a free agent and their depth chart there currently looks something like Wilmer Flores, Thairo Estrada, Jason Vosler, and Mauricio Dubón. The Giants also suffered a big blow in the world of coaching on Monday. Donnie Ecker, one of the Giants' hitting coaches responsible for turning this team's offense around over the past two seasons, is leaving for the Texas Rangers, where he'll be bench coach and offensive coordinator, in charge of offensive development at the major and minor league levels. Ecker is considered a rising star in the industry, and this moves him one step closer to potentially becoming a manager. But it stings for the Giants, although manager Gabe Kapler is known for constantly keeping tabs on coaches who would be next in line if one of their own departs. This is par for the course for a team that shocked the industry by winning a franchise-record 107 games. Finally, Ben discusses Buster Posey winning his second Comeback Player of the Year Award. It was a tremendous bounceback season for Posey (in part thanks to Ecker, no doubt), after he opted out of the 2020 season and had struggled to below-average offensive performance in 2019. Several Giants veterans enjoyed career years in 2021, thanks to the Giants' new coaches hired by Kapler.  State of San Francisco Giants' pitching staff entering offseason | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1598

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the state of the San Francisco Giants' pitching staff. Logan Webb emerged as an ace in 2021 and in the postseason, and he is under club control for four more seasons, but the rest of the starting rotation is a great unknown. Ben expects Kevin Gausman to be re-signed on a multiyear deal in excess of $100M, and he also expects one of Anthony DeSclafani or Alex Wood to be retained. However, that would still leave San Francisco with two open spots in the starting rotation, and of course it takes more than just five starters to get through a season these days. Ben discusses some possible solutions on the free agent market, from top shelf options like Max Scherzer and Robbie Ray, to pitchers looking for pillow contracts like Noah Syndergaard and Justin Verlander. Also discussed on today's show is the state of the Giants' quietly excellent bullpen. They led the majors in bullpen ERA in 2021, and only Tony Watson is set to reach free agency. The Giants have years of control and roster flexibility in their 'pen, which is an enviable position to be in. Camilo Doval and Kervin Castro have many years of control and are optionable if necessary, and under-the-radar guys like Tyler Rogers, Jake McGee, and Jarlín García are good and retainable as well.  State of the San Francisco Giants' position players entering the offseason | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1895

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick explores the state of San Francisco Giants position players entering the offseason. He's already spent a few shows discussing who he expects to be back and who he doesn't expect to be back, so today he looks at where things stand assuming that's how things play out. He goes position by position, looking at who currently projects to play, and exploring possible areas for improvement. Tommy La Stella returns, but he may need a new platoon partner with Donovan Solano expected to play elsewhere. Thairo Estrada is out of minor league options and seems like a logical candidate. But Wilmer Flores is expected to be back and could also be a candidate to platoon at second base. Ben expects Brandon Belt to be back, and he would lock down first base. Brandon Crawford is signed for two more years, and the Giants have a club option on Buster Posey. Ben thinks Evan Longoria should have a left-handed platoon partner, but it's hard to find an obvious fit on the free-agent market. He continues to dream about Corey Seager, but it's difficult to envision that dream coming to fruition. In the outfield, Ben imagines that LaMonte Wade Jr. could platoon in left with Darin Ruf. Both are under club control for at least the next two years. Ben does not expect Alex Dickereson to be back. In right field, Mike Yastrzemski and Austin Slater could platoon, with both under club control for three-plus seasons. In center, the Giants have Steven Duggar and Mauricio Dubón, both of whom have several years of club control but are out of minor league options. Ben identifies center as a possible area for improvement, and looks at the likes of Starling Marte, Chris Taylor, and Mark Canha as possible targets.  Five San Francisco Giants who won't be back in 2022 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1731

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick names five San Francisco Giants he doesn't expect to be back in 2022. The first is Kris Bryant, which is sure to be a controversial take among Giants fans. While Ben acknowledges that Bryant is a very good player, there are several reasons to think he won't be wearing orange and black in 2022 and beyond. He's likely to have a robust market, and Scott Boras clients often don't sign until late in the offseason. The Giants aren't likely to wait around for Bryant, whose performance with the club was good but not great after he was acquired in a midseason trade. Ben also names Johnny Cueto, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Dickerson, and Donovan Solano as key players he doesn't expect to be back in 2022 for various reasons.  Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford named Silver Slugger finalists | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1696

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick covers the latest with the San Francisco Giants. Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford were named finalists at their respective positions for the Silver Slugger Award. Both had excellent offensive years, and Posey looks to be in line to win the award. He led all catchers in wRC+ (min. 300 plate appearances) by a substantial margin. Crawford will almost certainly not win the award, given that Fernando Tatis Jr. is another finalist and is likely to win. Ben also discusses the report that the Giants are being innundated with permission request to interview their coaches for positions with other teams. Generally speaking, teams are expected to grant such permissions when the open position would be a promotion. General manager Scott Harris was reportedly contacted by the New York Mets about their vacant President of Baseball Operations job, for which he declined to be a candidate. Finally, Ben discusses the upcoming World Series between the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros, which gets underway tonight. The Dodgers appear to have been worn down by their race with the Giants, which included being pushed to the limit in a five-game NLDS. Major-league veteran Gordon Beckham joins the show to discuss his thoughts on the Fall Classic matchup.  Inbox: San Francisco Giants free agency thoughts and predictions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1904

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the San Francisco Giants' upcoming offseason. Ben discusses how the Giants have four openings in their starting rotation, and that will be their top priority. Kevin Gausman seems at least somewhat likely to return, given there is seemingly strong mutual interest. The Giants have had success revitalizing the careers of several starters, including Gausman, Drew Smyly, Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Wood. All four were brought in on one-year deals, and hit the market in line for much bigger paydays following their time with the Giants. That should help the Giants sign more pitchers coming off down years, as they've established themselves as an extremely attractive destination. On the offensive side, Ben expects the Giants to re-sign Brandon Belt, who has been among the very best hitters in baseball since the start of the 2020 season. If Belt departs, that would leave a huge hole in the lineup, although the Giants could figure out first base with some combination of LaMonte Wade Jr., Tommy La Stella, Darin Ruf, and Wilmer Flores. Keep in mind, however, that there's likely to be a universal DH in baseball next year, so the Giants will have an additional offensive spot in the lineup to fill every day. That could create a better opportunity for younger players like Joey Bart. Signing other offensive players, even big fish at the top of the market, remains a distinct possibility as well. The Giants have only about $40M committed for 2022, after being near $200M in annual payroll not long ago. Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTube Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  Giants mailbag: Is Chris Taylor a better fit than Kris Bryant? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1741

Is Chris Taylor a better fit for the Giants than Kris Bryant? On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Is Chris Taylor a better fit than Kris Bryant? Are Marcus Stroman, Marcus Semien, Starling Marte or Mark Canha realistic options? Do they go after Corey Seager? Do you think Farhan Zaidi spends big on anyone, or does he resist knowing that depth is so important? Based on any weaknesses or problems our team had this season (there weren’t many!) or even something another team did that you liked (had a good player, emphasized certain skills, etc.) is there anything in particular you would like the Giants to address/change this off-season? On a scale of 0 to 100, guess the chances the Giants sign Brandon Belt, Bryant, Kevin Gausman, Alex Wood and Anthony DeSclafani for 2022? Any players the Giants might need to protect from the Rule 5 Draft? Do you see Giants re-signing most of their pitchers, or repeating what they did last year and handing out one-year deals to guys who had down years or injuries?  Evaluating the 2021 Giants' infield | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1951

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick explores the San Francisco Giants' production in the infield in 2021. Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, and Brandon Belt were absolute studs and had career years. Darin Ruf, Wilmer Flores, and LaMonte Wade Jr. played valuable part-time roles. Evan Longoria was really good until he wasn't. Tommy La Stella had an overall disappointing first year in San Francisco, but it's easy to see why they like him and he will be back for the next two seasons. Donovan Solano came down to earth and is a free agent. Thairo Estrada impressed in limited opportunities, and may take Solano's role next year.  Evaluating the 2021 Giants' outfield | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1842

Some good, some bad, some in between. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick evaluates the 2021 Giants' outfield. In many ways this group was disappointing overall, but there was some good performance and even a legitimate breakout. Mike Yastrzemski followed up his MVP-caliber 2020 with somewhat of a dud in 2021. His offense dipped to mediocre levels, although he continued to play strong defense. Alex Dickerson fell off a cliff and seems like a definite non-tender candidate. Austin Slater seemed to take a step back from 2020, but his numbers clearly indicate he continued to be a force against left-handed pitching. LaMonte Wade Jr. broke out and became Late Night LaMonte. Darin Ruf was a monster at the plate and figure to be back. Overall, the Giants have a ton of flexibility when it comes to their outfield. Not one player is under guaranteed contract, but almost everyone can be retained if the Giants so desire. The one exception is Kris Bryant, who is a free agent, but the Giants have tons of freed up money and can choose to spend some of it on an outfielder if they so desire. Ben names Starling Marte, Chris Taylor, and others among the outfielders the Giants may attempt to sign. Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTube Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  Zaidi: Bringing back Posey a 'high priority' for Giants | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1849

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' season-ending press conference with president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and manager Gabe Kapler. Zaidi spoke about the team's desire to retain Buster Posey, who's going to spend some time talking with his wife and deciding his future. The Giants hold a $22M club option on Posey for 2022, and it's a no-brainer for the Giants to at least pick that up, if not extend Posey, assuming he wants to keep playing. Joey Bart doesn't appear ready to take over a primary role at the major-league level, and the free-agent market offers no solutions at the catcher position. Ben also discusses how the Giants will approach Brandon Belt and Kris Bryant's free agencies, as well as all members of the starting rotation reaching free agency besides Logan Webb. There are a lot of talented free-agent pitchers out there this winter, as well as young stud position players like Carlos Correa and Corey Seager. Expect the Giants to be among the most active teams in baseball this winter as they have money to spend and a 107-win season to back up.  Giants enter offseason with money to spend and holes to fill | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1937

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' upcoming offseason. He talks about the key players set to reach free agency, and the critical decisions the Giants will have to make. The first order of business is Buster Posey, who has a $22M club option for 2022 (with a $3M buyout). Posey has said that he wants to take some time with his wife to discuss his future, so it remains to be seen if he's 100 percent committed to playing next year and beyond. Brandon Belt is set to reach free agency, as is the Giants' entire starting rotation besides Logan Webb. Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Wood are all impending free agents, and Johnny Cueto has a way-too-expensive $22M club option that will be declined with a $5M buyout. Brandon Belt will likely be offered the $18.4M qualifying offer. Kris Bryant is set to reach free agency. Players who will be back because they're still under club control include Webb, LaMonte Wade Jr., Evan Longoria, Brandon Crawford, Tommy La Stella, Jake McGee, Darin Ruf, and Mike Yastrzemski, among others.
