The Gnarly Gnome: All The Podcasts

Jungle Jim’s is known for throwing some of the area’s best beer festivals. This week’s Brewcast was live from the newest of those, called the Buckeye Beer Bash. This all Ohio festival means that we spent a lot of time talking about the massive world that is Ohio Beer. My guest host was Craft Beer Joe from CraftBeerJoe.com and it was great having his insight to fill in all the blanks. We wrangled up Sean Willingham from Municipal Brew Works to finish the show out on a high note!

We were joined by the folks from Bad Tom Smith to catch up on not only what they’ve been up to, but what they’re about to be up to with two new taprooms on the schedule. To spice things up a bit, we were also joined by show friend Chef Tony from Brew City Sausage. We drank, we talked... we Brewcasted.

I was joined by Rivertown’s owner, Jason Roeper, to explore the brewery right after their massive growth into their new production space in Monroe, Ohio. They love their sour beer, but they know drinkers need options, which has led to a couple of new core beers with the move. What else do they have up their sleeves to continue growing into the future of Cincy craft?

We make our way out to Athens Ohio every year for Ohio Brew Week to see what’s happening elsewhere in Ohio, and the consensus is that it’s pretty much an exciting craft beer community everywhere you go! There’s some great beer in this state, and we tap into a little bit of it with Jackie Os, Devil’s Kettle and Little Fish. We also snagged Rick Armon to talk about his upcoming book ‘The Fifty Must Try Craft Beers Of Ohio’ and we see if we can crack the code... what makes a beer or a brewery memorable anymore?

Recorded live at Fifty West leading up to the 2017 release of Blue Melvin, this show was done in collaboration with GCCBS, and was just too fun to not let it live on as a podcast too. We were joined by Jesse from GCCBS, Queen City Fresh himself, and Max and Bobby from Fifty West. We drank both versions of Blue Melvin and we did what we do... we brewcasted.

It's a collaboration years in the works, and centuries in the making. Our very own Christian Moerlein Brewing Company is collaborating with Germany's Maisel and Friends for a pair of beers (one here, one there) that captures the spirit of tradition, and the fire of modern craft. We also sat down (during a very loud show)and talked to author Don Tolzman about what today's craft breweries might be able to learn from the beer barons of yesterday.

The second location for Braxton Brewing Company, called 'Braxton Labs' is about a lot more than just opening a second space. It's a smaller taproom - a smaller brewhouse - and an entirely new culture and opportunity for a team that already loves and desires to innovate. I sat down with Evan Rouse and Jonathan Gandolf to figure out what it all means for the Braxton of today, and the Braxton of tomorrow.

It’s been an eventful few weeks in craft beer, with the news that Wicked Weed is moving on to the “dark side”. We drink our way through our stashes of their beer and talk about what it means. We’ve also got this years Longshot six pack... so why not drink that too? It’s a home game... or a Gnome game. It’s a Brewcast.

I sat down with Jon Covey and Dave Dixon to talk about how Braxton has built an entire culture of innovation around their brewing process. I mean... we also drank a few beers... it is a brewcast after all.

I have been trying to sit down with Wooden Cask's Randy Schiltz for a long time, and it was worth the wait for sure. Technical difficulties aside, we got to dig in to the brewery, and what makes it all so special in an increasingly crowded Cincinnati craft beer scene. We talked about where Randy came from, why he started Wooden Cask, and a little bit about why he does things the way he does!

March First is a brewery that does things a little differently. They make lagers, ciders and are planning on distilling... why? I was joined by Garett Huber and Shae Pridemore to try to answer that question. Of course... we also had to drink a few beers to get a better idea of what they’re all about.

What makes this style a style? Is it even a style to begin with? There are so many questions that we needed to answer about the super popular NE IPAs that people are lining up for hours for the release. I grabbed Joe from CraftBeerJoe.com to help me navigate my way through the style... we talked about the origin, the characteristics and formed some opinions on NE IPAs. Of course... we drank a few as well!

How do you mark the first ever can release for a brewery? You do a brewcast from the line of people waiting to pick up cans of their Suh, Brah NE IPA. I was joined by Garret and Luke to talk about the style and drink a few fun beers, as well as explore what might be coming from Streetside in the future too.

Let's see if we still know how to do this whole podcast thing... after a short hiatus from the world of becoming a Dad, the Gnome's back with Brink Brewing Company. We needed to get to know this brewery after they've created quite the buzz around town around their grand opening last month. We tried the beers, we talked about the origins of the brewery and we got to the bottom of what exactly they are on the Brink of in College Hill. We're back, folks!
