Many listeners have been wondering, what is it going to be like to return to play? Chili's league got to return to play for several months last summer and shares the story of the league's challenges.  119 - Identity Loss and Post Traumatic Growth | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 2691

This week, I want to talk about Identity Loss after Trauma and Post Traumatic Growth. I think this is a very relatable topic because even though I came to it through concussion recovery, I feel like these ideas are sooo applicable to so many situations in life so I think I can reach every one of you out there with this one and I love it when an episode can touch everyone. Trauma could be a concussion (It's called traumatic brain injury!), any type of injury, maybe being diagnosed with a chronic illness, a traumatic incident in your life or even a world-wide pandemic perhaps. This has been a traumatic experience for many around the world and I’d argue we all have a bit of trauma to one degree or another from living through these times. Any incident in your life that makes you see the world as "Before" and "After" leaves you at a crossroads figuring out who you are and who you can be going forward as a better athlete, teammate, leader, and human being. Power Through the 4th Whistle will be taking an off season until January 2021.  109 - I'm Great and You're Not...Level Up Your Team | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 2791

If roller derby goes away, are we still friends? Or is this all our relationship is built on?  This week's podcast starts off examining different types of relationships and their foundation. Then our main focus is the FIVE stages of organizational culture that determine what you can achieve together. How do you overcome trust issues, apathy, and sarcasm? How do you put aside egos and constant squabbling to unite for the good of all? How can you use a crisis or common enemy to come together?  PUNCHY O'GUTS Special Guest! - 105 - Inclusive Coaching and Return to Play Training | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 3358

This episode, I spoke with Punchy O'Guts of 4EYES Coaching + Publications. Punchy is invested in using positivity, compassion, and forward-thinking to connect with, challenge, and inspire athletes. Punchy has published FIVE manuals for training those in roller derby as well as several articles in Five on Five Magazine.  This conversation focuses on a curriculum for safely returning to training on the track. What should we watch for? How do we know when our skaters are ready for the next stage? (apart from WFTDA guidelines, of course) Then we turn to the topic of Inclusive Coaching. To quote Punchy's blog: "Coaches have an incredible amount of power. It’s so important to acknowledge the power we have and use our leadership role to make derby culture more inclusive and safe. We can make intentional decisions so that our behavior, decisions, and language are not focused on creating a space that is only safe for white, cis folks. We must actively choose to create a space that is inclusive and safe for marginalized folks."

 104 - Racism in Roller Derby: Don't Pass the Star | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 3023

We need to address racism in ourselves and in our teams and leagues. Don't juke around it. Break through the wall. It's a harder path and can be really uncomfortable at times, but we can come out stronger on the other side. Do the work. In this episode, I talk about the broader meaning of words we have heard for decades. We can't go further in our pursuit of Anti-Racism in roller derby and our lives until we understand more about what these words mean. I'll be sharing a couple examples of what this looks like in roller derby and want to give a trigger warning in advance for any BIPOC who don't have the space to deal with that right now. I believe changing our systems and way of thinking about racism has to take place before we can go on a mission of recruitment for people of color to join our leagues. We can’t bring them in until we take some meaningful steps to make our house better before we invite people over. There are cracks in the foundation and we’ve been throwing a rug over it and not noticing they exist. Then I’ll go over some examples of how to approach meaningful interactions to help correct these problematic situations one on one. How do we talk to someone when they say something racially problematic? And how can we receive this information graciously when we make a mistake ourselves? Let's hold each other accountable and move forward together.  BALLER SHOT CALLER Special Guest! - 101 - Racism and Call-out Culture in Roller Derby | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 3483

This episode is NOT sponsored by Mota. “Don’t stop having conversations because it’s uncomfortable. I’ve been uncomfortable 32 years of my life. It’s ok for white people to be uncomfortable for the next couple years if it means that everyone is going to be equal and not judged because my skin is different... Social Media has given people this keyboard warrior mentality where they just say awful things about human beings. Ok, this person messed up and they’re trying to remedy it. NOPE! Once this person, always this person and there’s no rehabilitation and you’re awful and you should jump off a cliff. What in the world has our community and culture come to?...I think the issue is that we’re calling people out with no resolution.” Please share this episode...the message is really important. This week's topics are racism and call-out culture in the world of roller derby. The special guest is Baller Shot Caller. Baller has played for Gold Coast Roller Grrls, Atlanta Roller Derby, and Team USA Roller Derby and has been voted as captain for all three. She excels at jamming and blocking and often plays as pivot and is a traveling coach with Tuff Love Coaching.

My Gratitude Letter to Bonnie D. Stroir - A Very Special 100th Episode (The Puppy Talk and Leadership Lessons) | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 4447

To celebrate our very special 100th episode, I am giving an audio letter of gratitude to Bonnie D. Stroir. She inspired me on my path to becoming a better athlete, teammate, leader, and human being. I met Bonnie D. Stoir in 2013 about a month before she retired from roller derby after skating and coaching for over a decade. Bonnie D. Stroir was the first full time traveling roller derby coach and she spread her lessons all over the world, but it was more than just skating. It was about bettering yourself as a person in interpersonal communication and conflict management, treating yourself with compassion and improving your ability to learn, and developing leadership skills to inspire others and pulling the greatest potential out of the people you lead. In this episode, along with my sincere thanks, I am sharing lessons I learned from her that made the biggest impact on developing myself and others over the years to become as awesome as we could be in one lifetime. When we met, I was at a crossroads in my derby career and wasn't sure if I'd make it another season. She opened my eyes to new ways of leading, communicating, and learning that gave me hope for the future again. If our paths hadn't crossed, I don't know if this podcast would exist.  BONNIE NEEDS HELP - Visit the GoFundMe Page for Bonnie D.  099 - The Science of Gratitude | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 2690

People love complaining. It seems harmless, it connects us as human beings when we can vent to each other or agree with each other on social media. Venting seems to make us feel better. It makes us feel less alone. But what does it really do? You might get a positive boost from that connection but what happens afterward?  We can improve our health and wellbeing, enhance our relationships, encourage healthy sleep, heighten feelings of connectedness and so much more...through the practice of gratitude. I'm going to take you through the science based research on the topic and all the benefits and share ways to express gratitude that go beyond the homework assignment of keeping a journal and are more sustainable for your life.

098 - The Future of Roller Derby with Double H (Executive Director of the WFTDA) | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 5392

Releasing this special episode with Double H a day early! In this episode, we discuss the future of roller derby and the big questions that are always being asked. Should roller derby be an Olympic sport? Will roller derby become a professional sport? Will there be a future where I tell someone I play roller derby and they DON'T ask if I elbow people? What's with the pay gap for women's sports and how is the pandemic affecting this? And the big one -- what does the return to play plan look like and when can we start playing roller derby again? Erica Vanstone (Double H) is the Executive Director of the WFTDA. Erica previously acted as the organization’s Chief Media Officer, where she developed the mission-forward broadcast program, WFTDA.tv. After working in the film and television industries for more than a decade, Erica began a career in nonprofit management and sports. She has acted as an announcer for the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, the Arena Football League, and more. Erica is dedicated to expanding perspectives of inclusion around women’s sports and is shaping the WFTDA vision for transformation as it continues its mission to improve and grow the sport of roller derby and its service to the derby community.
