Hemp Industries Association Conference 2019 & A Conversation with Joy Beckerman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:27

Our Editor in Chief Kit O’Connell just returned from the 2019 Hemp Industries Association Conference, so he came on our podcast to discuss what he’d learned and share part of an interview he conducted with HIA president Joy Beckerman. In episode 19 of the Ministry of Hemp Podcast Matt interviews Kit about his visit to the Hemp Industries Association annual conference, which took place this year in Charlotte, NC. The big talk at the event were new Department of Agriculture guidelines which could make it even harder for U.S. hemp farmers. Another topic of concern at the show was whether North Carolina could ban smokable hemp. But there was lots to discuss after the first year of legal hemp growing since the 2018 Farm Bill became law, legalizing the crop again after decades of prohibition. Kit gives a shout out to The Hempville, a company helping North Carolina farmers bring hemp fiber and other parts of the plant to market. He also mentions a presentation by hemp lawyer Frank Robison, who previously came on our show, and PlusCBD Oil, one of our favorite CBD brands. (Photo: Ministry of Hemp) At the end of the podcast, Kit shares part of a lengthy conversation he had with Joy Beckerman, the president of the HIA. and a hemp advocate with decades of experience. Joy is also regulatory officer and industry liaison for Elixinol, one of our favorite CBD brands. Kit and Joy talk about supporting small hemp farmers, future Food & Drug Administration guidelines for CBD, the cleverly named CBD brand Sunday Scaries, and the future of the industry in general. My name’s Matt Baum. And I am your host. And today on the show, it wasn’t easy, but I finally found a doctor who’s willing to go on record talking about hemp, CBD and the actual medical benefits that it provides. Now it might seem weird that I even have to say that out loud, especially with the amount of CBD and news coverage of CBD and medical claims that several companies are making. There’s a huge business and it’s all the rage right now, but not a lot of doctors are willing to come out and talk about the actual benefits until more research comes in. Today we’re going to talk to Dr. Joe Maroon. He’s a physician and practicing neurosurgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. And as it happens, he is the author of just such a study. But before we get into all that, let’s talk about hemp in the news. Soccer star Megan Rapinoe endorses CBD Speaker 2: 01:04 Rapinoe ready. Arguably the biggest star of the show was Megan Rapinoe who won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards. Not only was she amazing on the field, she has a huge personality and also said some stuff that upset the President a little bit, so I kind of like her for that too. Now that Megan has some time off, she is joining her twin sister in a business venture. Her twin sister just happens to own a CBD compan

Complete episode transcript Below you’ll find the full written transcript for this episode: Matt: Welcome back to the Ministry of Hemp podcast. My name is Matt Baum, and I am your host. In the last few episodes we’ve been talking to some farmers and some people who know a lot about growing hemp. And today we’re going to talk about a specific kind of hemp, feminized hemp, that is used specifically for CBD. Feminized hemp is a term that I’d heard before, but I didn’t really know what it was. Lucky me, I found somebody who knows all about it. But before we get into that, let’s talk about the part of the hemp plant the CBD specifically comes from. Mainly that is the flower because the flower is what produces trichomes. Trichomes are the resin and sort of hair like follicles that contain the phytocannabinoids that CBD producers are going for. Since the flower of the hemp plant contains the highest density of trichomes, of course, growers want to encourage hemp to flower. And this is done by either getting it out in the sunlight in your fields, or growing indoors with very controlled lighting. The bigger the flowers, the more trichomes there are. And the more trichomes there are, the more CBD you’ll be able to get out of those flowers. The trichomes in the hemp flower start out clear, and then they kind of become a milky white, and later on they’ll even turn amber. Right around then it’s usually time to harvest. Though hemp growers have to be really careful when they harvest because they want to make sure that the level of THC in that plant is below 0.3%. Now as it turns out, some very smart growers have figured out that there are certain types of hemp plants that will have higher levels of CBD, lower levels of THC and produce even more trichomes than normal industrial hemp. And this type of hemp is what they call feminized hemp. And it’s something that’s been popular with marijuana growers for quite some time, but now using feminized plants has moved into hemp growing. And I found just the guy to tell me all about it. Breeding THC out of hemp Michael: Yeah, so my name is Michael Townsend. I’m the president, and co-founder, and director of Hemptown Organics, which is doing business as Hemptown USA. Matt: Michael, one of the things I was interested in talking to you about was specifically feminized hemp. When I looked your website, that seems to be what you guys are pushing. And you’re pushing it because it seems to have more CBG, CBD and CBN involved. Can you talk about that? What is feminized hemp?

What is a CBD Specialist? An interview with Jess Reynolds of Ambary Gardens | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:45

In the Ministry of Hemp podcast, we meet Jess Reynolds, a CBD specialist. Plus, how do you know the right dose of CBD? What is a CBD specialist? Complete episode transcript Below you’ll find the complete written transcript for this episode: Matt Baum: 00:03 This is the ministry of hemp podcast. I’m your host, Matt Baum, and today on the show we’re going to talk to Jess Reynolds. Jess is the resident CBD expert at Ambary Gardens out of Colorado. We’ll talk more about what exactly is a CBD expert in a little bit. I thought it was kind of funny when he said it, too. It turns out he’s not kidding. The guy’s a CBD expert. He’s smart, he’s funny, and he was a lot of fun to talk to. Finding your CBD dose Matt Baum: 00:28 But before we get into that, I wanted to touch on something that John and I talk about briefly later on in the interview. It’s about how to approach finding the right dosage of CBD for you. You’ll hear it towards the end of the interview, we go into a little bit about pharmaceutical medicine and how it’s tailored with certain rules. If you’re this size or this age or this weight, take this much. And that’s not necessarily the case with CBD. Matt Baum: 00:58 CBD affects everybody differently, so it’s harder to figure out the proper dosage. From what I’ve learned and from what I hope you’ve learned on this show, the best way to go is to start slow and low. From my experience, a 250 milliliter tincture … And that is CBD that is bonded with some type of oil, usually an MCT coconut oil. Start with half a dropper in the morning, half a dropper at night and see if that helps. You can always go up from there. If you find that you’re doing a full dropper in the morning or a full dropper at night, don’t be afraid to move on to maybe a 500 milligram bottle, or even 1000 milligram bottle, which is what I use pretty regularly. Everybody’s metabolism is different, of course, and like I said, CBD is going to affect everybody differently. So don’t be afraid to experiment with it, and don’t get frustrated. Matt Baum: 01:53 It may take a little time to find the right dosage for you, but keep at it and you will. Just be sure that you’re dealing with honest and upfront companies that are growing the hemp the right way, extracting the CBD properly, and using the right ingredients for either their tinctures, or their pills, or their balms, or whatever they’re using. Matt Baum: 02:14 Now keep in mind anybody that tells you that this is a cure all or a miracle drug, or you don’t need chemotherapy, you just need CBD, well, they’re lying, and that’s just not the

My name is Matt Baum. Today on the show, we are starting the first of what I’m calling a series focusing on women in the hemp industry. Today we’re going to listen to my conversation with Jane Pinto from First Crop. Jane is amazing. She is not unlike interviewing a unicorn. She is spiritual. She is excited. She is powerful, and she is helping hemp farmers to bring their product to the public and making sure they do it in a safe and responsible way. Jane was wonderful, and I can’t wait for you to hear this interview, but before we get into that, let’s touch on a little news first. Hemp banking update Matt Baum: 00:52 Just a couple episodes ago, we were talking about banking and how difficult it is for anyone in the hemp business to legitimately process electronic payments or get loans from a bank. Well, there’s actually very good news this week. The SAFE Banking Act or the Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act of 2019, which is sponsored by several different bipartisan representatives, just passed in the US House of Representatives with a bipartisan vote of 321 to 103, which is crazy because there are no more bipartisan votes in Washington, DC. The hemp industry is feeling pretty good. It looks like this could pass the Senate, and the SAFE Act is going to be introduced, and it’s going to get voted on. Matt Baum: 01:39 What it would do, it would allow marijuana related businesses and states with some form of legalized marijuana and strict regulatory structures as well as businesses selling hemp derived products, that’s where the hemp comes in, to access the banking system. 2019 was not a great year for hemp crops. The farmers battled rain and drought and hail, mold, everything you can possibly imagine that would kill a hemp plant. This year’s harvest, which is the first since hemp was made legal throughout the US under the 2018 Farm Bill is estimated to come in at 115,000 to 138,000 acres, and that’s according to votehemp.com. That sounds like a lot, but it’s nothing when you think about the millions of acres that are devoted to major cash crops. Matt Baum: 02:30 I kn

Regenerative Agriculture, Hemp and Saving the World with John Roulac | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:41:50

Our host Matt talks with John Roulac, founder of ReBotanicals and an outspoken proponent of regenerative agriculture. They talk about everything from what it means to be a responsible farmer, the Center for Food Safety’s Hemp-CBD Report Card, to how gross rotten coconuts can be. John isn’t just an environmentalist and founder of one of Ministry of Hemp’s Top Brands, he’s also working on a film called “Kiss the Ground” narrated by Woody Harelson produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. I’m sure you heard that there was a climate strike, I’m sure you saw Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old climate activist that spoke in front of the UN last week. She gave a very fire and brimstone speech that some genius on YouTube set to death metal, and it’s wonderful. Speaker 2: 00:27 [inaudible 00:00:27] How dare you? Matt Baum: 00:35 She said all her speeches will have death metal in the background from now on, and as a metalhead I can get behind that, but the important part was we were actually talking about climate science, in a time where there’s been a lot of attacking science, and a lot of attacking the facts of climate change. It’s so cool to see the youth of the world coming together and organizing these climate strikes. Matt Baum: 01:00 So today on the show we’re going to talk about what some hemp farmers are doing to do their part, to grow hemp responsibly. It’s part of a practice called regenerative agriculture. My name is Matt Baum and this is the Ministry of Hemp podcast. Meet John Roulac Matt Baum: 01:22 Today on the show I’m having a conversation with ne of the founders of one of Ministry of Hemp’s top brands, RE Botanicals. His name is John Roulac, and not only is he a huge proponent of regenerative agriculture and making an incredible CBD product, but he is also a very outspoken, punk rock environmentalist that is not afraid to call people out when they’re doing it wrong. I don’t know if I’ve talked to anyone with the depth of knowledge that John has about hemp, from seed to plant, to processing and finally to market. Matt Baum: 01:59 When John is not working at RE Botanicals, or speaking about regenerative agriculture, he is currently working on a movie with producer Leonardo DiCaprio, Woody Harrelson narrates, the film is ca

My name is Matt Baum. I’m your host, and today we’re going to talk about money. If you’ve been paying attention, then you’ve probably heard that hemp is the new go-to cash crop for American farmers. It’s going to save American farmers. It’s going to change the way they do business and that’s true. It probably is going to change a lot of things, but right now the single biggest impediment to hemp farmers, to hemp businesses, to anybody that wants to do anything in the hemp industry, is moving your money around. Matt Baum: 00:41 While the 2018 Farm Bill made hemp legal to grow in all 50 states, there are still some states fighting this like Idaho and South Dakota, and it may never be legal there the way that they’re going, but it is legal just about everywhere else and a lot of states are writing their own hemp programs right now. The biggest issue at the moment, big American banking doesn’t trust hemp. It sees an industry that is not fully regulated, that is currently in its infancy and just not worth putting their money behind. But there are some people that are working to change that, and today we’re going to talk to two of them. Talking hemp law with Clark Wu Matt Baum: 01:29 Meet Clark Wu. This one is called Spagyric extraction and Spagyric from Enerhealth is going to tell us all about it. But before we get to that, perhaps you’ve heard the news. Is it safe to vape CBD? Trump: 00:28 Vaping has become a very big business as I understand it, like a giant business at a very short period of time, but we can’t allow people to get sick and we can’t have our youth be so affected and I’m hearing it, and that’s how the first lady got- Matt Baum: 00:42 According to the Center for Disease Control, six people have died from a lung disease linked to vaping, and a reported 380 confirmed and probable causes have been identified across 36 States and the US Virgin Islands. So today we’re going to talk about it. Let’s get into it. Is it safe to vape CBD? I’m not going to address e-cigarettes or anything else. We’re going to focus here on hemp. That’s what we do in this show. Matt Baum: 01:13 I spoke to Marielle Weintraub last week on the subject. She was at Natural Products Expo East in Baltimore and she was running around trying to find a quiet place. I’m glad. Thank you for letting her in. She’s super smart- Marielle Weintr: And I’m president of the U.S. Hemp Authority. Matt Baum: 01:25 … and she’s super helpful… Excellent. And today, Marielle, we are going to talk about vaping and how dangerous it is and how many people that’s killed and when is the slaughter are going to end. Marielle Weintr: 01:41 It depends if you put that into comparison of how many people have died from alcohol and tobacco and so on. Matt Baum: 01:43 Right. Of course. There’s been a lot of news recently about six deaths due to somebody tampering or making their own mixtures, and this has led the Trump administration to jump on it right away because six deaths is way too many. We won’t even go into gun deaths, but six death

It’s Matt Baum. I am your host of the Ministry Of Hemp Podcast, and today on the show we are going to be talking about another type of extraction for our extraction series.
