The Doctor's Farmacy with Mark Hyman, M.D. show

The Doctor's Farmacy with Mark Hyman, M.D.

Summary: We are seeing an ever-increasing burden of chronic disease, primarily driven by our food and food system. This is perpetuated by agricultural, food and health care policies that don’t support health. We need to rethink disease and reimagine a food system and a health care system the protects health, unburdens the economy from the weight of obesity and chronic disease, protects the environment, helps reverse climate change and creates a nation of healthy children and citizens. This podcast is a place for deep conversations about the critical issues of our time in the space of health, wellness, food and politics. New episodes are released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning. I hope you'll join me. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

What Is Your Constipation Telling You About Your Overall Health And How To FIx It with Dr. George Papanicolaou | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:47

What Is Your Constipation Telling You About Your Overall Health And How To Fix It | This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth and BelcampoConstipation is an often uncomfortable and extremely prevalent condition affecting close to 80 million people. And while constipation might be common, it is definitely not normal and it can have disastrous consequences. Having healthy digestion and eliminating waste every day (ideally twice or three times a day!) is critical to your overall health. Your liver flushes out toxins and dumps them into your intestines. However, if your digestive system isn’t working optimally, then all those toxins and waste can get reabsorbed into your body. So, it makes sense that constipation has been linked to multiple diseases, including cancer and even Parkinson’s disease, plus it actually makes you feel like crap!In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the importance of getting to the root cause of constipation. They share information on the most common drivers of constipation including diet, chronic stress, antibiotic overuse, and a wide range of many other issues. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Healing Foods That Taste Great | This episode is brought to you by BelcampoThe more we can learn about using food as medicine, the more power we have to reach our health goals. Food has the power to prevent and reverse disease; there can be so many powerful (and delicious) benefits waiting for you in each bite. The Functional Medicine Approach To Hypothyroidism And Hashimoto’s Disease | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Rupa HealthWhile thyroid disease can occur in various forms, one of the most common is called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the thyroid gland and diminishes its ability to create precious hormones—ones that impact every cell of the body. Hashimoto’s is the leading cause of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) in the US, with women at much higher risk, being 7 to 8 times more likely than men to get it. Because of its autoimmune component, people with Hashimoto’s are actually at a higher risk of developing other autoimmune diseases as well. The good news is that the right diet and lifestyle choices can work wonders when it comes to treating and healing the thyroid. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease.  Is Climate Change Fixable? A Conversation With California’s EPA Secretary with Jared Blumenfeld | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:45

Is Climate Change Fixable? A Conversation With California’s EPA Secretary | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Beekeepers NaturalsWe’re divorced from nature and disconnected from wild places. I think this has really hurt us in multiple ways, some of which we are still figuring out, but especially in the way it’s allowed people to desecrate the land, air, and water we rely on for life. Yet people are so resistant to acknowledging climate change and what needs to be done. This could be because of the doom-and-gloom approach many folks take that can be outright depressing or the overwhelming amount of inputs that cause people to simply shut down. It might also just be hard to wrap our heads around how it’s possible to destroy something as vast as the ocean and sky. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m hoping to provide you with a different perspective on climate change revolving around hope and positivity. Yes, we still have a long way to go, but we’re seeing some great initiatives and outcomes in places like California where the climate and environment are deemed worthy investments. My guest today is the perfect person to share about those projects, challenges, and victories. Jared Blumenfeld is California’s Secretary for Environmental Protection. Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom in January, he is one of America’s most innovative environmental leaders, with more than 25 years of environmental policy and management experience at the local, national and international levels. This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Beekeepers Naturals.Right now, BiOptimizers is offering my community 10% off their CogniBiotics, a brain and mood-enhancing probiotic that contains specifically chosen strains with a high level of research supporting mental health and performance.  The Pegan Diet: Eat For Gut Health | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:29

The gut microbiome is likely the most important regulator of our overall health. Unfortunately, our modern diet, gut-busting lifestyle, environmental toxins, and other factors all feed the bad bugs in our gut and drive inflammation, which is at the root of almost all chronic diseases and obesity. Sixty percent of our immune system is in our gut, right under a one-cell thin layer of gut lining. When we treat this lining unkindly, we develop a leaky gut, allowing food proteins, microbes, and microbial toxins to “leak” into our bloodstream, triggering our immune system to start fighting the foreign invaders. We call this dysbiosis (as opposed to symbiosis) an imbalanced gut microbiome. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses how to eat for gut health, the fifteenth principle in his new book, “The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World” available now at pegandiet.comThe Pegan Diet is Dr. Hyman’s definitive guide to using food as medicine and understanding how food impacts every system of our body. It has 21 easy-to-follow principles for anyone, regardless of where they are on their health journey. It also contains 30 delicious Pegan-approved recipes. Get your copy today!  Becoming Nobody: The Key To Freedom And Happiness with Rameshwar Das | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:48

Becoming Nobody: The Key To Freedom And Happiness | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and Athletic GreensOur higher and lower-self are always around, but who are we listening to most of the time? Who is having the conversation in our heads? Taking a deeper look at my level of awareness led me to study Buddhism in college and though I changed course to pursue a career in medicine, spiritual growth has always remained a passion for me. I think as humans we need a mass recognition that we are all one; we need to see that inside we’re all the same. Learning from others is a key part of the journey to greater awareness and there are so many teachers I’ve found throughout my life that have helped me do that. Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy is one of them. Rameshwar Das has been navigating a spiritual path for 50 years. Ramesh met Ram Dass in 1968 and spent time with Neem Karoli Baba in India from 1970-72. He learned Vipassana meditation from Goenka in India. Ramesh has worked as an artist, photographer, environmentalist, and writer. He has collaborated on many projects with Ram Dass over the years, including the original Be Here Now, and the Love Serve Remember recordings, and is co-author with Ram Dass on three books, Be Love Now, Polishing the Mirror, and Being Ram Dass. This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and Athletic Greens.Paleovalley is offering 15% off your entire first order.
