Photographic Dynamic Range | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:17

Jeff Harmon talks with Bill Claff about his Photographic Dynamic Range testing and math that can be seen on his photonstophotos.net website. Jeff goes over the following questions with Bill: 1) Who is Bill Claff and what do you do with photography? 2) What is the story or background of your excellent photonstophotos.net website? Why did you create it? 3)You have a lot of math and explanation behind your Photography Dynamic Range (PDR) number, can you explain that to someone who may not have as much background in math? Maybe a PDR for dummies kind of guide? 4)Is there a way to compare PDR to the Landscape score that DxOMark publishes from their testing? 5) I am a Canon shooter, currently shooting the Canon 7D2, and when I compare it to some others that are supposed to have significantly better dynamic range (7D2 11.8EV, Canon 80D 13.2EV, 5D4 13.6EV, Nikon D810 14.8EV) the difference in the PDR doesn’t seem nearly as significant as the EV rating from DxO. Why is that? How should we be looking at differences in PDR numbers on your site?  2017 iMac For Photogs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Jeff Harmon talks about a few changes to the show with some consolidation to a single Improve Photography podcast feed and a single Facebook group and then answers a question from listener Katie Shipley who asked: “I had just finished listening to the podcast and taking notes on what to look for when buying a new computer when Apple announced the new iMacs last week. Now I am confused on which one is best. I think the iMac Pro is out of my price range so I need to stick with an iMac. I would love suggestions on what to buy to get the best performance in LR and PS. The top of my budget is $2000 but would love to not spend that much if I can get great performance for less” Jeff recommends the base level 27″ iMac with upgrades of 256GB SSD and 16GB of memory that comes in slightly over budget at $2,100 before taxes.  If the $2,000 budget is more hard than that then the mid-level 21.5″ iMac with upgrades to a Core i7 CPU, 256GB SSD, and 16GB of memory brings the price in at right on $2,000 but leaves not room for taxes in the budget.  If that is still a problem then go with the Core i5 CPU and the 256GB SSD and 16GB RAM which comes to $1,700 and should mean with taxes the computer will come in under budget.  Photographers, Don’t WannaCry | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Jeff Harmon offers advice on how photographers can defend themselves from ransomware like WannaCry (aka Wanna Decrypter and WannaCrypt) through following 3 primary computing habits: 1) Keep your computer updated. Only install software you went out to get, keep all of the software on your computer updated, if you don't need software then get rid of it. 2) Do NOT open attachments you were not expecting. 3) Regularly backup your photos to disconnected drives or to something that supports file versioning.  Shooting A Solar Eclipse | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Jeff Harmon is joined by Brent Bergherm to talk about shooting a solar eclipse. For the first time since 1979 a total solar eclipse will be visible from locations across the continental United States and Jeff goes over 6 questions with Brent about how a photographer can prepare now to be ready to capture such an event: 1) What is the event, when is it happening, where is the best place to see it? 2) What can photographers do with the gear they likely already have to get a good shot? 3) For those who want to do all they can to capture this solar eclipse what kind of gear can they rent to do that? 4) What are the basic settings to start with as they go into this shot? (shutter speed 1/640, aperture f/11, ISO 400) 5) If a photographer wants to get something more than just the eclipsed sun and combine some foreground elements can they do that in a single shot or will it require compositing? 6) What are the dangers of doing this kind of shooting for both the photographer and the gear?  When is it Time to Upgrade Your Camera? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Jeff Harmon answers a question from listener Melanie Rice who on the Facebook page asked: Question about upgrading equipment: Started 10 years ago with a Canon 30D. Upgraded to Canon 60D 3 years ago when photography played a bigger role in my graphic design business. Now photography is becoming my main focus - mainly stock images, fashion and real estate. Is it time to upgrade again? If so, to what? Can you help me understand the different camera bodies and their main features that set them apart from each other? How do I know for sure what I need? Will all my old lenses be too "intermediate" for a newer, better camera body, or does that not come into play? Thank you for the time and consideration Jeff, who is asked this same question almost weekly and faces this question himself as a Canon 7D2 shooter, offers his recommendation on 3 things to consider before making the significant leap to full frame: 1) Master the camera you have! 2) Glass may be a bigger benefit 3) Technique Most photographers asking this question about upgrading have not done any of those three things, especially the 3rd option to improve their technique by investing the money they would have spent on a camera body in a workshop, video training, or a professional portfolio review. If the thought is to upgrade from an older crop sensor body to a newer crop sensor body then the advice remains the same with those three things probably doing more for your photography than the newer body. Though there is the potential that a newer crop body will provide a feature or option that could make a difference, like the Autofocus Micro Adjustment (AFMA) feature. Use google to help you figure out the feature differences and then determine if those features will actually help you. Ad for this episode: Improve Photography Retreat 2018.  Lightroom: 2 Bugs and Catalog Backup | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Jeff Harmon talks about 2 Lightroom bugs that he has had a lot of questions on from listeners: 1) In 2015.10 / 6.10 when round tripping from Lightroom to Photoshop an error message saying that the Camera Raw plug-in is not version 9.10 is coming up even though Photoshop is fully updated and has the very latest version of the Camera Raw plug-in 2) Back in 2015.8 / 6.8 an error message about the catalog backup being 4GB was shown even though the catalog file and the backup were not actually that big. Jeff walks through Lightroom Catalog backups, how it works, recommendations for how to set it up, and why it is this 4GB message isn't a problem because it was incorrectly coming up in version 2015.8 but even it if was accurate it isn't something to worry about.  AFMA Explained | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Jeff Harmon answers year old listener question from Improve Photography writer Aaron Taylor: Here's a Photo Taco episode if there ever was one: AF Microadjust/Fine Tune. Why do it? When to do it? How important? Is it obsessive or necessary? Use a Lenscal device or just something you print yourself? Jeff talks about how autofocus micro adjustment (AFMA) is something specific to DSLR cameras, not needed and therefore not offered in mirrorless cameras. Not all DSLR cameras have the feature to do AFMA, but if it does then it is something worth doing - especially if you shoot portraits using narrow depth of field. Jeff talked about an 11 point setup needed to do AFMA: 1. Set your shooting mode to aperture priority. 2. Set your aperture to the very widest setting (f/2.8, f/1.8, f/1.4). 3. Set ISO to 100. 4. Set the focus point to use the single, center focus point. 5. Set your focus mode to single shot on Canon, af-s on Nikon 6. Turn off image stabilization. 7. Good amount of light. 8. Use a tripod. 9. The camera needs to be as level with the target as you can make it. 10. The camera needs to be a specific distance from the target. 11. Set AFMA to 0. Jeff outlines 3 methods or processes to doing AFMA that seem to have almost equal support in the photography community with fanboys for each one: 1. Ruler method - setting up a ruler target on a 45 degree angle and then shooting shots with different AFMA values set through the camera menu to find which one most consistently results with sharp focus right where the focus point was placed in the scene. You can use DIY targets here with a ruler or tape measure, but paid for targets simplify things and are nicer to use. 2. Software calibration. Tethering your computer to your computer you can have software figure out what AFMA value most consistently has sharp focus where the focus point is. The most popular of that software by what seemed on overwhelming majority is FoCal from Reiken. 3. Dot Tune method invented by Fred Miranda. Ingenious out of the box thinking that leverages a comparison between contrast detection autofocus and phase detection autofocus plus the focus confirmation lights that come on when a lens is in manual focus mode. After using all three methods Jeff preferred the Dot Tune as a process with FoCal software coming in as a very close second. A distant third was the ruler method. He did the tests many times across his four lenses capable of wide open apertures and couldn't find that one method was more accurate than another and unfortunately each method has fans of that method dead convinced it is the most accurate so it is hard to say if there is a meaningful difference in accuracy.  Keyword Like A Pro | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Jeff Harmon talks through three mini-topics and then shares how to use the keywording features of Lightroom like a Pro including the Keyword Tags box, Keyword Suggestions box, and the Keyword Set box of the Keywording panel along with the Keyword List panel in the Library Module. The three mini-topics covered: 1)Lightroom bug with macOS where panels and film strip all go black. Solution is to right click on the Lr icon in the dock, choose hide, then right click again and choose Show. 2) Jeff's workflow for moving photos from SSD to slower storage when a shoot is done. He used to recommend doing the move inside the Library module of Lightroom but based on a recommendation from Victoria Bampton he does it using Finder or Windows Explorer outside of Lightroom to lessen chances of having problems. 3) Confirmed bug in latest release of Lightroom in version 2015.10/6.10 where it is falsely saying that the ACR (Camera Raw) feature of Photoshop is not the latest version. The message can safely be ignored and just click the Open Anyway button until it is fixed in an upcoming 2015.11/6.11 release.  State Of The Updates Q1 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Jeff Harmon provides his view on the current state of major software updates for photographers including Windows 10 Creator's Update, Apple macOS Sierra (10.12.4), Lightroom CC 2015.9/6.9, Luminar, and On1 Photo 2017. ====================== Advertisers for this episode: 1) improvephotographyplus.com, free two week trial and only $19.99 to subscribe 2) Luminar post-processing software $69 but get $10 off using coupon code PHOTOTACO at checkout ====================== Before going through all of those applications and his recommendation to apply those updates, he briefly follows up on a couple of things that were missed in the previous Memory Cards Explained episode. Jeff recommends a good and fast card reader to decrease your changes of corrupting your memory card and recovery software that can help photographers get out of a jam if they do have a memory card get corrupted or accidentally format. ====================== Here is the status of the updates as of Q1 2017: 1) Windows 10 Creator's Update - Hold off for a few weeks if you can (Windows 10 Home users are going to be updated no matter what). Jeff has applied the update and other than an issue that seems related to an Nvidia Graphics Card update has had not issues so far but the update is far too knew to recommend applying it. 2) Apple macOS Sierra - All clear status, macOS Sierra has for several months had the Photo Taco seal of approval. As with all updates there are some that have issues but for the most part things have gone well and you are very likely to have things go great. 3) Lightroom CC 2015.9/6.9 - All clear status, gets the Photo Taco seal of approval. Some listeners and Adobe forum posts have reported minor (and very strange) issues, but it the relatively straight forward workaround of resetting preferences has fixed the trouble. Most everyone who has updated has had it go well and there are some good bug fixes that should make Lightroom more stable. 4) Luminar 1.1.4. Hold off for now, too new to know how it is going to go. Very nice update process and very encouraged by what MacPhun is doing with Luminar. 5) On1 Photo 2017.0.2 - Jeff doesn't have enough personal experience to know if the update is causing challenges, he is going to be getting much more experience with the software over the summer of 2017 and will be providing a full review similar to the review of Luminar in a previous Photo Taco episode. ====================== Links mentioned in the episode: Kingston Digital USB 3.0 Hi-Speed Media Reader (FCR-HS4) ($18): http://amzn.to/2ocoI3y Lexar Image Rescue ($34): http://www.lexar.com/imagerescue SanDisk RescuePro ($40): http://www.lc-tech.com/pc/sandisk-rescuepro-and-rescuepro-deluxe/ Zero Assumption Recovery (free): http://www.z-a-recovery.com Lightroom 2015.9 / 6.9 updates: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2017/03/lightroom-cc-2015-9-now-available.html Photoshop 2017.1 updates: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/whats-new.html#fixed_issues ====================== Other Photo Taco Resources: Vote for Jeff’s “Cull” module idea to be added to Lightroom: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/less_redundancy_actions_during_import_into_lr_instant_rating_during_import Photo Taco Archive: http://improvephotography.com/category/taco/ iTunes review link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/photo-taco-quick-photography/id980781096?mt=2# Facebook Photo Taco Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/phototaco/ Photo Taco Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/phototacopodcast/ Photo Taco email: phototacopodcast@gmail.com Jeff’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/harmon_jeff Jeff’s Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/jsharmonphotos/

It will increase the speed of your photography workflow if you will learn the Lightroom Keyboard Shortcuts. Bring up an overlay of the shortcuts available where you are at in Lightroom by using command-/ on Mac or ctrl-/ on Windows. Tip #2: Lens Recognition. Sometimes Lightroom does not correctly identify the lens correction profile to apply to your photo automatically. You can teach Lightroom which profile to use with your specific lens by doing "Save New Lens Profile Defaults" after manually applying the correct lens profile. Tip #3: Lightroom on Two Computers. This is NOT using the same Lightroom Catalog on two different computers at the same time. That is not a supported function in Lightroom today and you are asking for trouble if you attempt to do that. This is using Lightroom on a laptop when mobile and on a desktop at home and how to get the edits made in Lightroom on your laptop over to your desktop when you return. There are many options for this but the one I prefer is exporting a catalog to an external drive from the laptop and then importing that catalog to the desktop. Links mentioned in the episode: 1.
