Top Interview Questions & How You Should Answer Them Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM | iHeart Radio Please subscribe, rate, and review the Career Hacking Podcast. In today’s episode we’ll answer the question: If I need to truly distinguish myself from the rest to get this competitive job, what would you suggest I do (other than reading these articles and forming my own responses) to stand out from the crowd? A random interview tip that just came to mind is that you should never turn down a chance to interview if you aren’t completely confident in your interviewing abilities. If you receive an offer to interview but you aren’t very excited about the role, take advantage to practice your shtick. Even if it falls through, you’re that much closer to knock it out of the park when an offer you’re truly pumped about finds you. Even if you’re happy in your current job today, give another company a chance to extend an offer that you can’t refuse. Let’s break down a few common interview questions and what exactly you can do… to earn this job that really has you worked up. The examples I’m about to share are hot off the presses in a new WehnerEd Power-Up that will soon go live on WehnerEd.com. Check our products page for updates starting in mid-February.  CHP009: Which Jobs Will Disappear In The Coming Years, and Which Will Thrive? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6:58

Which jobs will disappear in the coming years, and which will thrive? Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM | iHeart Radio Please subscribe, rate, and review the Career Hacking Podcast. In today’s episode, I would like to break down what it really means to have a future-focused job, and why we emphasize them at WehnerEd. Many people don’t realize that their jobs or career paths are not sustainable….and they could cease to exist in the coming future. I would like to share more about the digital trends that are shaping our planet, and what it means for you. A YouTube video from Kurzgesagt (one of my favorite channels on YouTube) talks about how technology could replace up to HALF of today's jobs in the coming two decades and answers the question “even though automation has been around for a while… What’s different this time that will cause such drastic change in the workplace?” I highly recommend you watch this video, as nearly 4 million others have done, to hear the full story. In a nutshell, a huge number of jobs are being replaced by technology in the coming years because intelligent machines are learning to do more jobs than ever before. Blockbuster was replaced by Redbox and Netflix …(back when discs arrived in the mail) Amazon has replaced many retail industries, is one of the largest distributers of music and books, and is expanding further into the territory of grocery stores. Their highly complex supply chain continues to utilize efficient robots to organize products in massive warehouses and pack boxes for shipment. Their delivery drones will soon to lessen the need for UPS and FedEx drivers. They alone are impacting more than a dozen industries. It’s already been nearly 7 years since IBM’s Watson computer beat the most successful brainiacs on Jeopardy. Even back then, computers were defeating our best and brightest in dozens of intellectual categories. How much longer until they learn your skills? It’s no longer a matter of “if” but instead is a matter of “when.” This isn’t the first time that dramatic changes have occurred in our society. The industrial revolution caused similar large-scale changes as the population shifted from jobs in agriculture to jobs in factories. More recently, automation in factories pushed many into service-type roles, but now those jobs are dwindling as well.  Just as new skills were required to prepare the workforce for a new industrial economy, so too must our society today adapt and learn new trades for the jobs that are most in demand today and in the coming future. The good news is that the roles that will continue to thrive aren’t as difficult to obtain as you might think. Learning new skills is now easier and more affordable than ever with the advent of online education. Gone are the days where you need to pay a college tuition that also supports overly beautified campuses and football scholarships. Now you can learn faster and from the comfort of your own home without all the other overhead costs that are included in a brick-and-mortar institution. The key to success in anything is accountability. Many learners and entrepreneurs are unsuccessful because they aren’t able to hold themselves accountable each and every day. In both cases, it takes a ton of willpower to achieve in unproven business endeavors without the support of your network. Determine the best learning outlet for your needs, and leverage your fr

CHP008: How Do I Avoid Getting Laid Off? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 09:52

How Do I Avoid Getting Laid Off? Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM | iHeart Radio Please subscribe, rate, and review the Career Hacking Podcast. In today’s episode, we’ll answer a question from Sam in Waco, TX. “There have been some rumors going around the office about a series of layoffs around the turn of the new year. What would you recommend I do to avoid getting cut, and should I go ahead and start searching for a new job just in case?” It’s convenient that you ask this question, as I was recently a part of a team that was laid off earlier this year. I spoke last episode about preparing myself to take the leap into a new role, and as I was beginning that formal transition, the vast majority of my team was laid off in a restructuring. It’s common to think that only those who don’t meet expectations are the first ones to go, but the grim reality is that anyone, regardless of their standing or track record of success, is susceptible. Steve Jobs was famously fired from the company he founded! I’ve seen folks let go from the world-class, industry-leading teams they built, and ultimately it’s the way of the world. Businesses will forever operate in their best interests, and tough decisions are a part of playing the game. To answer your question on How Do I Avoid Getting Laid Off, there are standard and unsurprising practices that have proved effective over the years including Keeping your resume & LinkedIn information updated Stay in touch with your extended network Stay up to date on your licenses and certifications But really, in today’s day and age, these old habits likely aren't enough to ensure your continued employment. The reason for this is simple: The world today is changing at a faster pace than ever before.  Efficient and minimal-downtime robots are taking over the jobs of factory workers. Computers are now able to do the basic work of engineers while software coders are programming machines that can create their own software. Cars are on the brink of driving themselves, and a continually decreasing percent of the population still files their taxes with a human accountant each Spring. The rest are handled online. Needless to say that this is only the beginning of a new age of digital innovations that will continue changing the face of workforces everywhere. So then, how will you compete in the coming economy? Study the trends and ensure your efforts are continually aligned with changing customer needs Take time to study and to learn new things each day to instill a growth mindset. This investment will pay off immensely. Leverage the high rate of global innovations to work in your favor. Be an advocate of change, and implement improvements that will get you noticed. A growth mindset will not only keep your skill set relevant, but will also improve your adaptability.

The Best Candidate I Ever Interviewed. What I learned from conducting over 100 interviews. Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM | iHeart Radio Please subscribe, rate, and review the Career Hacking Podcast. In today’s episode we’ll answer a question from Claire in Ottawa who asks: Hey Ross, I’m interested to hear about the best candidate you’ve ever interviewed for a job and what made them so great? What can I learn from their success? To summarize and reiterate, this candidate immediately showed up with energy, charisma, a firm handshake, and a smile. They started sending positive vibes from the get-go. They then took this a step further and showed how organized they were. They were impressive with the tailored content that they had for the job specifically that I was hiring for and weren't just saying, “I'm a person interested in any job you can offer me.” I'm interested and here are specific reasons why you should hire me. Here are reasons why my experience relates to the job that you're trying to hire for. That makes it easier for me the recruiter. When I'm spending all day talking to candidates and trying to make quick decisions on whether or not each candidate is somebody that could be a potential for an interview in a few days. The candidate was engaging in relatable. If I think about people that I want on my team, I want somebody who takes initiative, who does things without being asked to, and somebody who goes above and beyond. This candidate did just that before they ever spoke to me. They left me feeling like I wanted them working on my team and that is something you should be shooting for as well at a hiring fair or when you go to an interview.
