Branch Basics works to bring you the world’s safest, natural, nontoxic cleaning products. And today’s episode is a special one. And instead of cutting it down, we wanted to divide it up and give you two full episodes. So on today’s show, we’re talking with Marilee and we’re hearing about her incredible story. I think you guys are really going to enjoy hearing this from Marilee. And then next week, we’re going to talk about Branch Basics specifically, and how you can really help to create a healthier home using safer products. So without further ado, let’s get into the show. And she’s hanging out with my mom right now while I can do a little few recordings. We’re dipping my toe back in, like I said last week on coming back from my maternity leave. And coming back with my first interview, and I could not be more excited about today’s conversation. It’s a real honor to introduce you guys to this incredible woman, and this fantastic company. I am a customer. I am a fan. And I want to shout your story from the rooftops. But instead I’m going to have you do it! I’m welcoming today Merilee Nelson today to the show. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And today we are back with the fourth and final installment of listener Q&A. So, let’s go ahead and jump right into it. In case you missed the first three installments, we talked about everything from mindset, to business ideas, lots of baby questions, pregnancy questions, postpartum fitness, pregnancy nutrition, and so on and so forth. Today, we are zeroing in on specific questions about nutrition and questions about safer skin care. Obviously, two of my primary passions. {laughs} So let’s get into it. Our first question is from Paleo Mrs. She’s asking; “How do you feel about bulletproof coffee, and intermittent fasting?” This is a great question. I actually get both of these questions pretty often, which is kind of funny, because they’re so specific. When it comes to bulletproof coffee, I have no problem with it. But I also don’t see it as a cure-all in a lot of ways. Every once in a while, a new product will pop up and it’s the new must-have, because it will help solve XYZ. And I’m always cautious of things that claim to solve a lot of things, especially if they’re food products. Bulletproof coffee, for those of you who aren’t familiar, the homemade variety is where you take some butter or coconut oil, some sort of a really great fat. You put it in with your hot coffee, stay with me, it’s delicious. {laughs} And then you can add, if you really want to get fancy, I’ve made it with collagen peptides. I’ll throw those in there, which are really great for hair and nail and skin growth. Some maple syrup is what I personally like to sweeten my coffee with. It’s delicious, you should try it if you are looking for a safer sweetener. And I like to put a little cream in my coffee, and then sometimes I’ll also add in some sort of a spice. Whether it’s a cinnamon. Primal Palate has a bunch of really wonderful sweet blends, like a gingersnap blend. I’ll sprinkle a little bit of that in there. And you blend it up. And what you get is a really delicious latte type of beverage. And it has a nice foamy top. It’s just wonderful. And because you added that butter,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And I am thrilled to be back again this week. If you are new here, welcome. Every once in a while; gosh, once in a blue moon. I cannot say once in a while, because I think this may be the second time I’ve done this in the history of this podcast. 152 episodes in. So once in a blue moon, we will do a listener Q&A. And this last round, being the second time I’ve done it in the history of this podcast, y’all submitted so many wonderful questions. And I am apparently very long winded that we had to break it up into several parts. So we’re back with part three of this listener Q&A. And I’m thrilled to get into it. So I’ll just go ahead and jump right in. If you missed the first two parts, just to rewind really quickly. We talked about pregnancy, pregnancy fitness, postpartum, and baby. And todays we’re going to dive into some of your business questions. Some cooking questions. Fitness. Just overall fitness. Gus, and mindset. And then next week; not next week. Several weeks from now we’ll round it all out. We’ll chat about nutrition and safer skin care. Alrighty, let’s jump in. This first question is a business question from Janie Taylor. And she said, “I just started listening to your podcast, and was surprised to learn you actually started with a cohost! When did you make the switch to host it solo, and why?” Charissa! Yeah, she was my cohost. This podcast would not have existed if it hadn’t been for Charissa. She; let’s see. If you rewind, I think we recorded a good; I think we made it into the 50s. I don’t know how many episodes we recorded together. But she is a friend of mine, and came up to me one day. We were at PaleoFx and she said; Cassy, why don’t you have a podcast? And I think my response was; what? Me? I didn’t even know I could do one. She’s like, I think you should! And I was so nervous about doing a podcast at first because it felt like I needed someone to give me permission to do it. But she saw some potential in it. She is one of those people that is so gifted at really just identifying; seeing what other folks don’t see and seeing really cool opportunities. So she put that on me,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And I am thrilled to have you join me today. Today is part 2 of what is likely to be a 4-part listener Q&A series. So what we did is I collected some questions; you guys submitted awesome ones via a call for questions a little bit ago on social media. And we’ve got them organized. Last time we had a Q&A podcast episode; you can find part 1, of course, on the blog or in iTunes. Wherever you're listening to this from. You can find that; that episode really focused on all of your pregnancy questions. We talked about pregnancy, pregnancy fitness, and pregnancy nutrition. And I’m apparently very long winded {laughs}, which is why we think this series might take a little bit longer. So today we’re focusing on a semi-related. We’re focusing now on postpartum. Your questions about postpartum, postpartum fitness, and baby. Ok. And then the last couple of episodes that we will zero in on will have to do with beauty, business, cooking, Gus, mindset, nutrition of course, and then a little bit more about safer skincare. Alrighty. Let’s go ahead and jump in without further ado. Our first question is from Stacy_Marie. She asks, “What are your must-have items for postpartum baby or self-related. It seems a lot of people buy all these gadgets that get used once or twice, and that’s it. Also, do you pump for night, so your hubby can help with the feedings, or are you doing it solo?” Great questions, Stace. I hope it’s ok; I just abbreviated your name even further! {laughs} Ok, so must-have items for postpartum. Goodness. Or baby. You know, when we went; on my blog, if you have not already seen this article. Or this blog post I put together. I posted my entire baby registry. And I think the post is called My Baby Registry. I shared that entire baby registry. I had done, of course, a lot of research on safer products for baby. I tried sources wherever possible materials that didn’t emit VOCs, volatile organic compounds. So the mattress was very important to me. The changing table pad. Everything from the disposable diapers we’re using while she’s really young, to the cloth diapers we’re planning on using later. And then I also,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia. I am your host for this 30-minute mindset, food, fitness, all those good things show. And today I am joined by a Fed and Fit listener. Her name is Natalie. And if you’re unfamiliar with reverse interviews, it’s where I have a fabulous reader or listener writes in with a really great question, and I invite them to come on the show to ask this question on a recording. And we get our conversation recorded. So today I’m joined by Natalie. She is just recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest, up near Seattle from the East Coast. I’m so excited to chat with you today, Natalie! Welcome to the show! Natalie: Thanks for having me. I’m excited. Cassy Joy: Yeah, definitely! Well tell us a little bit more about yourself. And then feel free to pepper away with questions. {laughs} Natalie: Sounds good. So like you said, we just moved here. It was a big change. And before we moved here, I basically got into the food and fitness sphere, whatever you want to call it, by working at a gym for a long time. That’s when I kind of learned about paleo, not caring about your actual numbers, and more about what your body can do. I found a bunch of food blogs, and yours was one of them, and I love it. Cassy Joy: Yay! Natalie: Yay! So my question is basically, because you talk about nourishing your body, listening to the cues that it gives you. And I am a person who; I feel like I’m constantly hungry. And a I have a couple of bites of food, and I’m full. {laughs} So literally when you talk about when you go out to eat, put away half your plate. I eat half of the half. And I feel like I’m done. So when I do go out to eat, if I go out with friends, it’s a little embarrassing so I’ll usually overeat. Because you don’t want to; I don’t know. I just feel like I don’t want to leave a ton of food on my plate. And also it usually tastes better. And then at home, I know what I want to eat so I’ll just make much smaller portions. And at home, when I cook at home, I do cook paleo. But out of the house I don’t. Cassy Joy: OK. Got it. I’m taking notes.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And I am excited today to bring you another very special guest. Today we are chatting with Mary Heffernan of Five Mary’s farms in Fort Jones, California. She lives there with her husband, Brian, along with their four daughters. Yes, all named Mary, too. She left a suburban life in Silicon Valley, California, to become a cattle rancher three years ago. They raise all-natural beef, pork, and lamb in the mountains of Siskiyou county, and ship their premium dry aged meats all over the country. Of which I’ve been a very grateful recipient. They are wonderful. Mary and Brian believe in doing things the old fashioned way and know that there are no shortcuts in agriculture. Raising animals the right way takes time, and attention, and hard work put in day in and day out by the whole family. Their attention to detail shows in the quality of their product. They are proud to share with people all over the US. Welcome to the show, Mary! Mary Heffernan: Thanks Cassy. I’m happy to be here. Cassy Joy: I’m so happy to have you here. I think I first came across you; it was several months ago. Diane Sanfilippo, a good friend of mine, had sent me several of your stories. And she was like; if you don’t, you need to be following Mary right now. {laughs} Mary Heffernan: Aww! Well we both have the love of a Great Pyrenees pup. Cassy Joy: We do. I love it. And I always wonder, because your Great Pyrenees are doing what they’re supposed to be doing. {laughs} they’re working. And whenever I chat; our Great Pyrenees puppy, he has a different kind of job description. But I’ve had dinner before with some folks that have working Great Pyrenees dogs. And for those of you who don’t know, Great Pyrenees are typically hard-working ranch dogs. Gus’s parents, for example, that’s exactly their background. They protected the livestock; from coyotes are really prevalent here in Texas. And Gus lives a very different life. He’s lounging on my bed right now. And I’ve had supper before with a couple of people who, when we told them we have a Great Pyrenees as a house pet,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And today I am thrilled to bring you a really wonderful guest. Her name is Lily Nichols. She’s a registered dietician/nutritionist. A certified diabetes educator, researcher, and author with a passion for evidence-based prenatal nutrition and exercise. Her bestselling book, Real Food for Gestational Diabetes, and online course of the same name, presents a revolutionary, nutrient dense, lower-carb diet for managing gestational diabetes. Her unique approach has not only helped tens of thousands of women manage their gestational diabetes, without the need for blood sugar lowering medication, but has also influenced nutrition policies internationally. It’s very cool. Lily’s second book, Real Food for Pregnancy, outlines the problems with current prenatal nutrition guidelines, and provides the evidence; 920 citations and counting; that’s wonderful. That supports a real food diet to optimize maternal and fetal health. It’s what we all want to learn about. Especially those of us that are currently pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or maybe we’re just generally curious! Lily is also the creator of the popular blog, www. PilatesNutritionist.com which explores a variety of topics related to food, mindful eating, and pregnancy nutrition. Welcome to the show, Lily! Lily Nichols: Thank you for having me, Cassy. Cassy Joy: Thanks for coming on! This is so exciting! I would love it if you could share a little bit more about your story, your background. What led you to this profession in particular. And with this brand-new book, why are you focusing now on prenatal nutrition? Lily Nichols: Yes. I’ll start from the top. I got interested in nutrition from a young age. I’m one of those rare people who decided in high school; I am going to study nutrition! And then stuck with it. Everyone’s like; you’ll change your major! You’ll change your mind. And I was really into it from the beginning. Pretty soon after I finished my training; my academic training and clinic training, I started working more in gestational diabetes and prenatal nutrition. I worked with the state of California for their diabetes and pregnancy program, which is called Sweet Success. And it was there that I was able to see both clinically and at the public policy level really more in-depth of why and what all the dietary recommendations are in pregnancy.

Her name is Lauren, and she’s got a really wonderful story that I would love to share. It’s kind of like a reverse interview, except Lauren and I started chatting not so much about some questions she had but she wrote in and shared a little bit of her story. And I said; would you be willing to come on the podcast and talk about that? Because I really think that her story and her journey is going to encourage and comfort a lot of folks out there. So welcome to the show, Lauren! Lauren: Oh, thanks for having me! Cassy Joy: Thank you so much for coming on! Lauren, to tell you guys briefly about her. She is a nurse practitioner. Right? I didn’t write it down because I said I would remember, and now I’m doubting myself. Lauren: Yes, you're right. Cassy Joy: {laughs} She’s a nurse practitioner out of Houston, Texas, and is an absolute doll. Thank you so much for coming on and making time for us today. I would love it if you would tell us a little bit more about yourself. Maybe rewind the clock a little bit on your health journey. Lauren: Sure. So like you said, Cassy, my name is Lauren and I work as a nurse practitioner full time here in Houston. I have two little boys, a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old who keep me quite busy; my second full time job, I always say. And a wonderful, supportive husband who quite frankly I couldn’t do this journey without. So that’s a little bit of kind of who I am and where I’m coming from. I always think that’s important, because I think so often we always compare ourselves. And like; oh, I could never do something like this. I have a full-time job, or I’m a mom, or I stay at home with my kids and they’re in my hair all day. And I just want people to know, too, that The Project is so doable, even with super busy kind of crazy life. And maybe not having; I don’t just sit around all day and think about when I’m going to eat next and plan my workouts. You know? I think that’s important to know that it’s doable, no matter how busy your schedule is. Cassy Joy: Yeah. And I don’t want to interrupt you. Well, I’m going to interrupt you. I don’t want to. Lauren: Yeah, go ahead. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And today I am thrilled to bring you one of my personal teachers and mentors that has really helped. I went through his schooling program, Bauman College, a couple of years ago. And from there, launched my own holistic nutrition practice. So I’m going to tell you a little bit about him; Dr. Ed Bauman. The namesake. Dr. Ed Bauman has been a pioneer in the field of holistic nutrition for over 35 years. His vision and leadership have inspired thousands of people to transform their lives. I would argue that’s even more than thousands of people since then. In the form of wellness, community, and peace. He received his M. Ed. From the University of Massachusetts, and a PhD in health promotion from the University Of New Mexico. Dr. Bauman created the eating for health model to teach individuals to make nutritionally comprehensive food choices. He founded Bauman College in 1989 with a mission to change the world through better nutrition and healthful living. He is a special advisor for the National Association of Nutritional Professionals, and brings a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and love of good health and good taste to his work. Welcome to the show, Dr. Bauman! Dr. Ed Bauman: Oh, I’m so happy to be here with you and all of our listeners. Cassy Joy: Yes! Absolutely. I just can’t wait for them to hear from you. So that was just a very brief introduction. And I know that all of your professional accomplishments, especially more recent ones, far exceed what I read. If you don’t mind, tell us a little bit more about yourself, and about Bauman College. Dr. Ed Bauman: Ok. Well, I got started on this path when I was 23 years old. And now I’m 71. So if you do the math, that’s quite a long time. I’ve always been interested in health, and food, and community. And really, forward progressive thought and action. So I was a child of the 50s and 60s, and saw that the culture was really off track. And it really didn’t represent innate natural health values, or spirituality. I’m a good student, and teacher, and I love my work. I was fortunate to buy an organic farm with my friends. It was a commune in 1970. So a pretty young age.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And I am thrilled to invite you all back for another week of food, mindset, fitness, all the good things. Today, we have another great reverse interview. I would love to introduce you all to Julia. First, if you’re confused about what a reverse interview is; these are when a Fed and Fit listener or reader writes in with a great question and instead of politely answering their question via email, like they’ve asked me to, I instead invite them onto the podcast to ask over a phone call. Where hopefully we have a conversation that I’m sure benefits more than just the two of us. So that’s kind of the nature of these calls. I’m thrilled to introduce you all today to Julia. She is from Philadelphia, and she is a speech language pathologist. She works with young kids in a school. Welcome to the show, Julia! Julia: Hi! I’m so happy to be here. Cassy Joy: I’m so happy to have you here! Well, like I told you before I started pressing record, or pressed record, I am yours for the next 30 minutes. Julia: Sounds good. Cassy Joy: So the baton is yours. Feel free to pepper me with whatever questions you’ve got. Julia: OK, sounds good. So, I wrote in with a question about; more of a mindset type. I guess looking for mindset advice, about body image. I feel like this is something that’s really out there in the media these days. But I guess I’ll just get into my personal things. Because I’m sure everybody has their own vision of their body and body image, but I’ll just get into mine. I feel like I can remember issues starting as young as 5th grade. I remember even before social media, I was looking into magazines that were like; oh these perfect model girls, and I don’t look that way. And then in middle school, obviously it is the worst for most kids. And I can say that because I work in a middle school. No one is really the shining star. And your bodies are changing so significantly that no one is looking their best. And then through high school and college, I was always a swimmer. The comparison factor there is real, because you're pretty much in a swim suit at all times. So you're not leaving much to the imagination. So I guess fast forward to now. I’m in my mid to late-20s. I feel like I eat a very clean diet. I am aware of what foods I can handle and what I cannot. I definitely control myself in moderation with certain foods.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia, welcoming you back to another week. Kicking it off on this lovely Monday with a quick 30 minutes. These shows, if you’re a new listener, welcome. We try to keep things really fun, casual, and focus more on, I guess the real life around what our healthy lifestyles look like. And today’s show is very much in line with that. I’m thrilled to introduce you guys to Madison Mayberry Hofmeyer. She is a freelance writer, recipe developer, and managing director; so bigwig, at Beautycounter. She lives in a small town in Iowa with her husband, Joe, and their two adorable little girls, Ainsley, who is 2.5, and Collins, who is 7 months old. The cutest darn names. She is passionate about encouraging other women and sharing honestly about the wonderful, challenging, joyful mess that is motherhood. I love it. You can find her over at Espresso and Cream is the name of her blog. Just EspressoandCream.com. Follow along with her musings on motherhood over on Instagram. Welcome to the show, Madison! Madison Mayberry Hofmeyer: Well thanks so much for having me! I’m excited to talk. Cassy Joy: I am too! So I have to say, Madison and I are on the same larger Beautycounter team page, which is how the two of us connected. And I just always; you know, online, you don’t really know-know people. You kind of get a sense. But I always loved the things that you’ve said. You are always very well poised and encouraging. Especially in these large groups. And then, you and I got to spend some time together in person. I got to meet you in person at a Beautycounter incentive trip. I walked away from that trip, and I think I remember calling my husband. He was asking how it was going, and I had known several of the girls there who had been friends for years. I was like, “oh, it’s great. And there’s this girl Madison, and I just think she is the sweetest thing. And I want to be her real friend.” {laughing} Madison Mayberry Hofmeyer: Oh my gosh! I think I said something similar when I left. I said, “Cassy is even more likable, if it’s possible, in person than she is on her very likable Instagram stories.” {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} That’s so funny! I love it. It was so great to spend some time with you. You are just such a wonderful soul.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia. I am your host. And this is the weekly 30-minute food, fitness, and mindset show. Mostly we talk about the last one. But occasional the others sprinkle in. And today is another reverse interview, where a Fed and Fit listener or reader has written in with a great question and invite them to come on the show so we can have a conversation about it. So today I am joined by Rachel. She’s from Durham, North Carolina, where she is an administrative assistant. Welcome to the show, Rachel! Rachel: Thanks Cassy! I’m so excited to be talking to you. Cassy Joy: Likewise. Rachel: So I just wanted to give a little bit of background about myself. I guess mostly my health history before I jump into some questions. Cassy Joy: Yeah. Rachel: So a few years ago, experiencing a lot of digestive issues. Nothing serious enough to really draw attention for running testing, but just enough to feel like something was off. So my primary care doctor at that time just kind of labeled it IBS but didn’t really give me any helpful suggestions. Just kind of left it at that. So I just began exploring on my own, and I wanted to figure out if there were more solutions. So I started off with a Whole30, and that really opened my eyes to cutting out processed foods and just changing the way I was eating. But I was still experiencing some issues after that. So I kind of went to a different doctor. I took a food sensitivity test. I eliminated a long list of foods for the next 6 months a year. A lot of those overlap with kind of a paleo template but included some random vegetables and fruits as well. So it was pretty restrictive for a little bit. Slowly reintroduced stuff. I was experiencing some headaches, as well. So I started to see an acupuncturist who had specialized in Chinese medicine. I was still having, as well, a few more digestive issues. So he said I probably had leaky gut. So I did a month on AIP as well as some supplements to kind of help heal my gut. So I feel like right now I’ve kind of stabilized out. Mostly following a paleo template, but I do eat some gluten free grains. The main things that I’m still sensitive to are gluten and soy. So I’m pretty careful about those. But through the whole journey,

And then we got into; we. {laughs} Me, myself and I. {laughing} We got into a habit of welcoming really wonderful guests on the show, because I just love it when you guys to hear from other leaders in our industry. And also other listeners. I hope you enjoy the reverse interviews that we do here on the show. They’re some of my favorite episodes to record, and they’re some of my favorite ones to share, because I think that it can really be eye opening when you hear about real life experiences and real life questions from real life people. Not that I’m not a real life person, but somebody who hasn’t made holistic nutrition and mindset coaching a part of their job. So anyway, thank you so much. I just wanted to start off today’s show by thanking you for being here. Thank you for tuning in. Thank you for all of your wonderful support. Thanks, of course, to our sponsors. This has been really a fun, wild ride working to bring you better and better content. This episode is airing on; let me see if I can make sure I have the date down. This episode is airing on Monday, January 15th. And I, although she’s still tucked away nice and cozy in my belly, there is a really good chance that between now and then, my daughter is born. Our daughter is born. And she could also still be tucked away by the time this episode airs. We’re a couple more weeks; who knows! Her due date is January 13th, this Saturday. So it’s going to be a really fun, exciting ride. I want to tell you guys what you can expect on the podcast through my “maternity leave” coming up. It is not going to look like a leave to you all, at all. My team and I have been working very diligently for the past 6 to; really 9 months to prepare for this. We have regular, brand new recipes coming to the blog. And brand new podcast episodes coming to you here every single week. We’ve already got them recorded. Some really wonderful interviews are coming out. I’ve also recorded a couple of science-type episodes. I know how much you enjoy those. And today’s episode is going to be a mindset episode. These are some of my favorite to put together. Because really, it’s the essence of the show; the Fed and Fit podcast was a healthy mindset for a healthy lifestyle was our original catch phrase. Because it’s one of those things that it’s our do not pass go. Right? It’s priority number one.
