Episode 50: 2018 Infiniti QX80, 2019 Volvo XC40, 2018 Buick Regal Sportback, Dad Jokes, The Downer Media, Porsche Bees | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 50:32

Sami drives the refreshed 2018 Infiniti QX80 full-size SUV and then gets really touchy about how it looks, while Benjamin pilots the all-new 2019 Volvo XC40 SUV in Spain and is surprised by just how big of an impression the compact crossover left on him. We also talk about the 2018 Buick Regal Sportback before segueing into quick hits on the 'the downer media' comment made at this year's LA Auto Show, fake audio speaker technology that Volvo wants you to think is totally real, the uselessness of in-car shopping, and Porsche's millions of honey-making bees.Links: 2018 Infiniti QX80 Review — The Infiniti QX80 has always been a big truck focused on telling everyone that you have arrived. Hard to miss with a polarizing design, it was the truck of choice for people who wanted to be noticed. Now it arrives with subtle tweaks to its exterior that makes it easier on the eyes. But there’s more to talk about than just its new look 2019 Volvo XC40 Review and First Drive — Perhaps no automaker’s transformation over the past five years has been quite so dramatic as that undergone by Volvo. First Drive: 2019 Volvo XC40 draws luxury heat with style, not badge — It might be lonely at the top, but in the world of luxury SUVs it's also increasingly crowded at the bottom. Of course, 'bottom' is a relative term when discussing premium people movers – 'entry-level' is more appropriate – but there's no question that the 2019 Volvo XC40 is facing a hotly-contested compact crossover market dominated by the usual German suspects from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Episode 49: BMW M5, BMW i3s, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Supercar Hate | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:29

BMW's newest version of its M5 super-sedan now sports all-wheel drive and an automatic-only transmission. Is it still fun on a race track? Benjamin drives the latest M5 at Estoril to answer that question - and also puts the BMW i3s through an autocross course to determine whether the brand's new and sporty take on its all-electric hatchback makes sense. Sami drives the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, a vehicle destined to be the last all-Mitsu product to reach American shores, and then makes fun of Benjamin when he admits he's never really been excited by supercars.Links: 2018 BMW M5 Review and First Drive — Is the fastest M5 ever becoming too much like its rivals? 2018 BMW i3s Review and First Drive — The car has more character than ever, which is a rare thing in the EV market. The McLaren Senna is one of the Wildest Road Legal Cars Ever — The McLaren Senna is described by the British manufacturer as the most extreme road-legal car it’s ever built. It also claims the car is “legalized for road use, but not sanitized to suit it,” and thus forgoes almost all creature comforts in the name of outright track performance. 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Review — The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is exactly what the automaker needs and what many customers want, with a splash of unique styling and high tech goodies to round out the package.

 Episode 48: Live From The 2017 L.A. Auto Show | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 30:29

A half hour of commentary live from the floor of the L.A. Auto Show this week as we experiment with free-flow, hand-held recording at one of the world's most important automotive events. We talk BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Subaru, Toyota, Mazda, and more - and don't forget our over-long segment on AMG Performance donut flavors.

 Episode 47: Lexus LC 500 - 500h Comparison, Compact Crossover Head-to-Head Shoot-Out, Silly Toyota Prius Prime | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 47:16

The Lexus LC 500 is one of the best-looking and best-sounding luxury coupes on the market, but how does it hold up on the cold streets of Montreal? And who, exactly, would choose its 500h hybrid showroom-mate over the standard 500's V8 thunder? Benjamin drives them back-to-back to answer that question. Sami, on the other hand, spends a week driving not one, but four compact SUVs: the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Honda CR-V, the Nissan Rogue, and the Chevrolet Equinox, to see which one comes out on top. Wrapping things up, the pair discuss the Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid, and specifically, how to devise a system that lets everyone around you know just how efficient you're driving. Spoiler alert: it involves the birth of a brand-new lifeform.Links: 2018 Lexus LC 500 First Drive: Surrender To All This Relentless Beauty — The all-new 2018 Lexus LC coupe makes a compelling argument for automakers to do it their own way rather than simply trace the familiar lines on a map already worn down by the competition. It also proves that sometimes ignoring the prevailing winds makes for a more interesting journey for driver and brand alike. 2018 Lexus LC 500 First Drive: Ground-breaking luxury coupe lets Lexus find its soul — The 2018 Lexus LC is an act of bravery. Not only did Lexus take the unusual and difficult step of birthing a street car that hews almost perfectly to the gorgeous, yet production-challenging lines of the LF-LC concept that preceded it, but it also chose to ignore prevailing winds – or are those forced induction vortices? – that have come to define the drivetrains found in top-tier luxury coupes. That the Lexus LC is a stunning design achievement is obvious to anyone with a pair of eyes. That it also waves a big, five-liter middle finger in the direction of its would-be German rivals is in a way both a more and a less-subtle statement.

Episode 46: Kia Stinger GT, Honda Fit vs. Kia Rio, Tesla Roadster Reality Check | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 51:11

The Kia Stinger GT has been aimed squarely at BMW, Audi, and Lexus luxury cars, but does this grand tourer have the performance and poise required to get a seat at that table? Benjamin spends a day with the Stinger GT in L.A. to answer that question. Meanwhile, Sami tests the Honda Fit head-to-head against the Kia Rio hatchback to determine where the best blend of value, practicality, and fun can be found in this hotly-contested, and affordable, segment. Finally, Benjamin feels cynical about the recent Tesla Roadster unveiling, while Sami tries to balance that out with good vibes and the benefit of the doubt about Elon's latest foray into boosting the company's stock price.Links: 2018 Kia Stinger Review: Bow To The Unexpected — Korean automaker's first foray into high performance headwaters proves that big cars, and big ideas, can still shake up the industry.

 Episode 45: Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, Nissan 370Z, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 48:17

Mercedes-Benz takes off the gloves in the compact SUV segment and pummels BMW and Audi with the new 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, a 500 horsepower family hauler that has no equal in its class, and Sami has the inside story on what it's like to drive it. Benjamin spends a week with the Nissan 370Z, a car that's been largely unchanged since 2009, and as a result finds itself out of step with the rest of the performance universe. Finally, leaked details about the upcoming Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 are debated, as the pair try to figure out how the ZR1 and the upcoming mid-engine Corvette can play nice together in a crowded Chevrolet showroom. Also, lots of jokes.

Episode 44: 2018 Hyundai Accent, Toyota Camry vs. Hyundai Sonata, Honda Civic Type R, Nissan Micra | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 49:00

Can the 2018 Hyundai Accent stay relevant in a world where people seem exclusively interested in crossovers and SUVs? Benjamin had the chance to drive the redesigned Accent in the Nevada desert and came back with some insights on the future of small cars in America. Sami stayed home for an in-depth comparison of the Toyota Camry versus the Hyundai Sonata, and was shocked by how the challenger has unseated the juggernaut of family sedan sales. Finally, Benjamin gets his first taste of the Honda Civic Type R, and spills the beans on a Canada-only secret: the Nissan Micra.Links: 2018 Hyundai Accent Review and First Drive — It’s a symptom of the universe that the slow death of small cars in the United States is heralded by perhaps the best crop of safe, efficient, and affordable compact and subcompact vehicles to have ever been available to budget-conscious buyers. Honda Civic Type R vs Subaru WRX STI vs VW Golf R vs Ford Focus RS: Sport Compact Comparison — Spend any time in the 2017 Honda Civic Type R and you’ll quickly realize that it’s probably the best sport compact car money can buy.

Episode 43: Cadillac V Performance Academy, AMG Peformance Tour, Race Driving Schools | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 48:14

Have you ever wanted to drive your car on a race track? The Cadillac V Performance Academy. which comes free of charge with each V Series Cadillac, lets you do exactly that for 2 days at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, and Benjamin talks about what it's like to spend a week there as a student. Sami discusses his own race driving experience at the AMG Performance Tour on Vancouver Island.Links: AMG Performance Tour: We Sample the Best the Brand has to Offer — Whether you want a hot hatch, high-speed highway hauler, an SUV with a rumbling V8, or an old-school rear-wheel-drive speed machine, your best bet will be to visit the fine folks at Mercedes-AMG. Cadillac V Performance Academy Rises Above the Driving School Standard — I’ve spent the past 10 years bouncing from one school to another, working my way through autocross, street survival, road course, and time trial classrooms and pit lanes in a bid to evolve as a driver. During that time, I’ve yet to encounter a program as philosophically cohesive and well-executed as the Cadillac V Performance Academy, which operates out of Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada

Episode 42: Volvo Polestar 1, Next-Generation Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Fine Comfort Ride, Smell Like A Mazda, 2018 Chevrolet Malibu | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:36

Do you want to smell like a Mazda? The Japanese automaker is betting that you do with its latest perfume, which distills the essence of the Kodo design language into a wearble fragrance. Is this as silly, or more silly, than Toyota naming its upcoming concept car the 'Fine Comfort Ride?' We're not sure, but we also talk about the Polestar 1 electric super coupe, debate the merits of calling a car the 'Polestar 1,' and try to figure out if the next-generation Jeep Wrangler will life up to the sales juggernaut that is the existing version. Finally, Benjamin spends a week with the Chevrolet Malibu Redline and Hybrid, and comes away not entirely certain where they fit in the current automotive landscape.

 Episode 41 - 2019 Audi A8, Mercedes-AMG E43, Cheap Sports Cars, Old Track Cars, Weird Shifters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:20

Have you ever wanted a luxury car that can actually leap up into the air to protect you in a collision? Audi thinks the answer to that question is yes - and it also feels that you're so sick of driving that the new A8 should take care of most of that too, as Sami discovers during his time in Valencia with the redesigned 2019 model. As for Benjamin, he spends the week with the Mercedes-AMG E43, a confusingly-branded mid-range version of the comfort-minded mid-size sedan from Mercedes-Benz. We also talk lightning rod shifters, fake manual transmissions, and why Benjamin feels like he was hit by a truck after a weekend on the track in his Datsun.Links: 2017 Mercedes-AMG E43 Review — Automotive branding breeds unusual beasts, and nowhere is this truer than in the ever-shifting landscape of German luxury sedans and their performance counterparts.

Episode 40: Fiat 124 Spider Abarth, Porsche 911, Sports Car Personalities, Jamie Oliver's Land Rover | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 52:28

Have you ever wanted a Land Rover SUV that could churn butter, make toast, and dispense olive oil at the touch of a windshield washer button? Apparently Jamie Oliver did, because Land Rover built him one, a comedic gift for which we are eternally thankful on this week's episode. We also talk about how poorly-executed the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is - aka the Italian Miata - and have a deep philosophical discussion about whether a car that's so amazingly competent in every situation, like the Porsche 911, could ever truly win a driver's heart, or whether the most memorable sports cars - like earlier generations of said 911 - need to be at least a little bit weird/scary/rough around the edges.

 Episode 39: Ferrari GT4CLusso, McLaren MP4-12C, Dodge Challenger TA, Mercedes-Benz C300 Cabriolet | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 54:19

Four seats and four driven wheels aren't what you'd expect from a Ferrari, but then again, the GTC4Lusso - an update of the FF - is like nothing else the Italian brand has ever built. Benjamin gets a chance to pilot the most unusual 12-cylinder modern Ferrari in the line-up, while Sami also reflects on his recent supercar experience in the McLaren MP4-12C, which has become a stellar bargain on the used car market. Then it's back to Challenger town as Benjamin drives the Challenger T/A and realizes that it might really only be subtly different from the Scat Pack - and that's probably by design. Sami rounds things out with a love letter to the Mercedes-Benz C300 cabriolet, a car he would probably marry if he weren't already engaged to danger.

 Episode 38: Jaguar F-Type 400 Sport, 2018 Lexus LS, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Wagon, Audi AI | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 55:48

Benjamin drives the 2018 Jaguar F-Type 400 Sport, Sami offers first impressions on the completely-redesigned 2018 Lexus LS luxury sedan, and both talk about the unicorn-like Mercedes-Benz C-Class wagon before diving deeping to the world of Audi's scary empathetic artificial intelligence car that will know how you feel even before you feel it!Links: First Drive of the 2018 Lexus LS at AutoGuide.com — Launched in 1989, it was the brand’s first vehicle and it showed the world that the Japanese automaker had what it took to pamper serious luxury car buyers. It’s been almost 30 years since, and it feels like the Lexus LS has lost that go-get-em attitude. Fortunately for 2018, there’s a whole new generation that will bring some mojo back to Lexus’ big sedan.

 Episode 37: Mercedes-AMG GT, Frankfurt Auto Show, Mazda CX-3, Mercedes-AMG Project One | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 43:57

Benjamin talks about driving the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R on the track at Bilster Berg in Germany, as well as his experience with the Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Sami discusses his strong feelings for the Mazda CX-3, and teases his drive of the redesigned Lexus LS.Links: 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R - First Drive — I'm sitting in the driver seat of the GT R on Bilster Berg's pit row, listening to AMG Driving Academy chief instructor Reinhold Renger as he goes over the finer points of the bright green monster's high-tech wizardry. Although the R may share its basic shape with the street-oriented GT and GT S editions of the coupe, mechanically this most belligerent member of the AMG family is as different from the base car as a straight razor is from a Schick. Despite his willingness to demonstrate how I can dial in as much or as little traction control as I may desire using the dash-mounted knob, Renger helpfully suggests that, of the GT R's four drive modes, I stick with "Sport+" and avoid "Race" until I've had at least a few laps at speed under my belt. "You know, because, well, this is a lot of car," he says, looking me directly in the eye. A pause, and then he repeats this for a second time. "A lot of car."

Episode 36: Chad Kirchner, Audi R8 Spyder, Volvo V90, Civic Si Vs Elantra GT, Woodward Dream Cruise | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:12

Guest Chad Kirchner of the Future Motoring podcast joins us this week to discuss the Audi R8 Spyder, the Volvo V90, and the Woodward Dream Cruise. Sami and Chad also debate the finer points of comparing the Honda Civic Si to the Hyundai Elantra GT.Links: 2017 Audi R8 Spyder review for SlashGear — Asphalt-scraping, bone-jarring suspension setups, blind spots the size of a refrigerator, and the constant danger of reckless drivers zooming from two lanes over to snap a photo while hanging inches off the bumper are hazards anyone who elects to daily drive their six-figure sports car regularly face.
