01_The Seven Principles of Catholic Social Justice | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

One of the most unique and attractive beacons in the Catholic Church is her well-defined, carefully articulated, deeply-held, and concisely packaged body of social teachings, a body of doctrine with which, the bishops say, "far too many Catholics are not familiar." In fact, they add, "many Catholics do not adequately understand that the social teaching of the Church is an essential part of Catholic faith." Our times have made us hungry for guidance on how to live social justice with catholicity. We acknowledge that every baptized Catholic must live his or her faith in truth and justice. If you don’t get anything else out of all God is allowing in our world right now, get this week’s overview of the Seven Principles of Catholic Social Justice, and hear the Holy Spirit guide you in *your* next steps.   Friends of the Show get all Premium Content!  08_Anointing of the Sick, A Biblical Walk through the Sacraments | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

Like all the sacraments, holy anointing was instituted by Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry. “This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament. It is alluded to indeed by Mark, but is recommended to the faithful and promulgated by James the apostle and brother of the Lord” (CCC 1511; Mark 6:13; Jas. 5:14-15). The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude (CCC 1520). These graces flow from the atoning death of Jesus Christ, for “this was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, ‘He took our infirmities and bore our diseases’” (Matt. 8:17).   Friends of the Show get all Premium Content!  07_Marriage, A Biblical Walk through the Sacraments | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

The Bible begins and ends with marriage. "Scripture speaks throughout of marriage and its 'mystery,' its institution and the meaning God has given it, its origin and its end, its various realizations throughout the history of salvation, the difficulties arising from sin, and its renewal 'in the Lord' in the New Covenant of Christ and the Church. 'From a valid marriage arises a bond between the spouses which by its very nature is perpetual and exclusive; furthermore, in a Christian marriage the spouses are strengthened and, as it were, consecrated for the duties and the dignity of their state by a special sacrament'" (CCC 1602, 1638).  06_Holy Orders (Priesthood), A Biblical Walk through the Sacraments | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

Institutional priesthood was God's idea! In the Old Testament, God commanded that "the priest's office shall be theirs by perpetual statue" (Ex 29:9). "Perpetual" does not mean "until Jesus comes," but forever. Obviously, God desires there be an institutional priesthood, now, in His New Testament church. Jesus, our true and eternal High Priest, ordained the twelve apostles as bishops. With apostolic authority, they, in turn, ordained others as deacons, priests, and bishops, maintaining the Old Testament hierarchical structure and establishing the apostolic authority that continues today in Catholic and Orthodox Churches. For this reason, the "office" of apostolic priesthood was filled by Matthias when vacated by Judas (Acts 1:20). This was done before the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit fell on all the apostles, including Matthias, demonstrating that God approved of and accepted Matthias, and ordination as the apostles' process of passing on their authority. Priests continue to be ordained through the Sacrament of Holy Orders throughout the New Testament to today. Jesus is the High Priest at the center of the pastors of church history pictured in Revelation 1. Jesus teaches, "watches" over, and guides His Church through salvation history through the priesthood He established and chooses. Friends of the Show get all Premium Content! Set their souls on fire with love for your people. Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.  05_Confirmation, A Biblical Walk through the Sacraments | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

"...[T]he apostles, in fulfillment of Christ's will, imparted to the newly baptized by the laying on of hands the gift of the Spirit that completes the grace of Baptism. For this reason in the Letter to the Hebrews the doctrine concerning Baptism and the laying on of hands is listed among the first elements of Christian instruction. The imposition of hands is rightly recognized by the Catholic tradition as the origin of the sacrament of Confirmation, which in a certain way perpetuates the grace of Pentecost in the Church. "Very early, the better to signify the gift of the Holy Spirit, an anointing with perfumed oil (chrism) was added to the laying on of hands. This anointing highlights the name 'Christian,' which means 'anointed' and derives from that of Christ himself whom God 'anointed with the Holy Spirit.' This rite of anointing has continued ever since, in both East and West. For this reason the Eastern Churches call this sacrament Chrismation, anointing with chrism, or myron which means "chrism." In the West, the term Confirmation suggests that this sacrament both confirms Baptism and strengthens baptismal grace" (CCC 1288-1289). Friends of the Show get all Premium Content!  04_Confession, A Biblical Walk through the Sacraments | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

Where is confession to a priest in the Bible? Everywhere! Throughout the Old Testament and into the New, God demonstrated His desire that we come to him when we fall into sin. Jesus gave the apostles power and authority over unclean spirits, to forgive sins, to heal, and to raise people from the dead, all of which testify to the power and authority in them through Christ. They, in turn, passed that power and authority to those whom they ordained. This power does not come from them, but from God. Confession restores the soul.  Friends of the Show get all Premium Content! Throughout the series, we are discussing the sacraments in that order: Baptism for new birth, Eucharistic nourishment, Reconciliation as medicine, Confirmation to sustain one's holy witness, Marriage and Holy Orders for life-giving vocation, and Anointing for healing and the final journey home.  02_Baptism, A Biblical Walk Through the Sacraments | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

The origin and foundation of Christian Baptism is Jesus.  Before starting his public ministry, Jesus submitted himself to the baptism given by John the Baptist in the River Jordan, shown above.  The waters did not purify him; he cleansed the waters.  . . .  Jesus did not need to be baptized because he was totally faithful to the will of his Father and free from sin.  However, he wanted to show his solidarity with human beings in order to reconcile them to the Father. By commanding his disciples to baptize all nations, he established the means by which people would die to sin – Original and actual – and begin to live a new life with God.  01_The “Masterwork” of God, A Biblical Walk Through the Sacraments | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

Are "sacraments" biblical? Sacrament comes from the Latin for "oath" or "swear," and oath-taking is as old as Creation, as old as the Old Testament, as old as Christianity. God Himself swears an oath to you in every sacrament, and you swear one to Him every time you receive one. Jesus instituted seven Christian sacraments, or covenants, for His one; holy; catholic (meaning universal); and apostolic church. The sacraments are "the masterworks of God" (CCC 1116), that administer and affect saving grace in the soul. Together, they equip us for a complete self-donation to God that draws us deeper and deeper into the mystery of God's Trinitarian life for all eternity. Friends of the Show get all Premium Content!  06_Sprinkler of Nations, Servant Song 4.1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

Yes, friends, this last Servant Song of Isaiah extols the Suffering Servant's purifying, saving power over even infectious diseases. I'm not kidding. The Suffering Servant "sprinkles the nations" - outside the place of worship - purifying them of sickness and sin. Who could have ever planned such a series with such a show at this time?!  The supreme self-sacrifice prophesied in the main part of the text is as surprising as the spin Isaiah gives it. Any religious person of his day would have viewed the Servant’s suffering as rightful punishment for sin. But the prophet sees through a different lens. Through beautiful imagery, Isaiah announces three-fold vindication for the Servant whose vicarious suffering will “justify the many.” God greatly rewards the selfless Servant and turns his suffering into the balm that heals the world.  05_Ears to Hear, Servant Song 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

The author of the Letter to the Hebrews tells us that “Whom the Lord loves he chastises” (12:6). In the third Servant Song centuries before, Isaiah prophesied that the Lord’s Servant would endure suffering without complaining. By embracing sorrow without losing heart and by accepting discipline as instruction, the Servant would gain a share of the holiness of God. As a result, the student would become a teacher. Having learned at the feet of the loving and merciful Lord, the Servant now instructs the nations in the ways of obedience and discipleship. But most of all, he models fidelity and long suffering. Remarkably, the Servant’s sufferings have not led him to turn away from God; he neither feels abandoned nor betrayed. Confidently, he stands before those who mock him, knowing their power will wear away like a threadbare garment, while God’s help lasts forever. The proof of discipleship, he says, is walking in darkness without any light, save that of faith in the Lord! Woe to those who walk by their own light, trusting neither the Lord nor his Servant. They do so at great peril, he says, risking utter destruction. Friends of the Show get all Premium Content! L - Listen (Receive the Word.) O - Observe (Choose one or more of the following personality approaches to connect the passage to your life and recent events.) The confidence with which the Servant speaks of God’s vindication challenges our faith. Exodus 14:14 says, “The Lord will fight for you; you have only to keep still.” Could you do what the Servant does, silently trusting in God to bring you justice and vindication? If you have not experienced suffering like that of the Lord’s Servant, surely you don’t have to look far to learn of others who experience it everyday. What modern-day individuals have inspired you by enduring suffering in this heroic and godly manner? Pain, whether physical or psychological, is never far off. But if we are Christ’s body, then Christ suffers with us, uniting our pain to the suffering he offered to God on the Cross. Pope John Paul II wrote that because it was through suffering that Christ saved us, suffering was itself redeemed and “raised to the level of redemption.” Now, anyone who suffers can become “a sharer in the redemptive suffering of Christ.” (Salvifici Dolores) Do you see your suffering as untied to Christ’s? Do you believe it can participate in his act of redemption? V - Verbalize (Pray about your thoughts and emotions.) Lord,  Behold me, my beloved Jesus, weighed down under the burden of my trials and sufferings. I cast myself at Your feet, that You may renew my strength and my courage, while I rest here in Your Presence. Permit me to lay down my cross in Your Sacred Heart, for only Your infinite goodness can sustain me; only Your love can help me bear my cross; only Your powerful hand can lighten its weight. O Divine Servant-King, Jesus, whose heart is so compassionate to the afflicted, I wish to live in You; suffer and die in You. During my life be to me my model and my support; At the hour of my death, be my hope and my refuge.Amen.+ Tour Italy with Sonja ~ Click the pic to register

 04_King of Kings, Servant Song 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

In this second Servant Song, we see the mission of Christ expressed in vivid detail. The people of Israel had lost their way. These were the Chosen People. God had made a covenant with them. But they did not keep their part of the bargain. They wandered away, until they were without hope. They forgot God; they had forsaken Him for other gods, and been overrun by foreign powers, dispersed to the ends of the earth. But Jesus came to reach those who were lost. He came to restore them back to a right relationship with God. Friends of the Show get all Premium Content! L - Listen (Receive the Word.) O - Observe (Choose one or more of the following personality approaches to connect the passage to your life and recent events.) Have you ever let the awareness that God has known you from your mother’s womb penetrate your heart? Does the realization bolster your confidence or does something in you deflect it? God’s Servant is a “suffering” Servant. Why do you think suffering is so often a reality in the lives of God’s chosen ones? When you think of the suffering you have endured, do you perceive a salvific component in it? When dealing with struggle and failure, what helps you to remember that God’s opinion of us is far more important than the world’s? V - Verbalize (Pray about your thoughts and emotions.) Remembering that He loves you and that you are in His presence, talk to God about the particulars of your O – Observe step. Lord, help me release my fear of failure to you. I know Satan wants to use my fears to prevent my living boldly for You. Remind me that You are often glorified in our failures by showing us that "it's not about me." Forgive me for when I do not walk in faith, and help me from this moment on to live with bold confidence in You. Lord, help me not compare myself to others around me. I pray instead that I keep my eye on You and live a life of excellence that proclaims Your glory.  03_Broken Reeds, Servant Song 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:00

Lent comes around each year to invite those of us who have grown weak or dim to hear afresh God’s promise and receive anew the Servant’s healing touch. The ends of the earth await his teaching and they will not be disappointed. And neither will the recesses of our hearts that await the warmth of his healing and reconciling love. L - Listen (Receive the Word.) O - Observe (Choose one or more of the following personality approaches to connect the passage to your life and recent events.) "Some of us tend to do away with things that are slightly damaged. Instead of repairing them we say: “Well, I don’t have time to fix it, I might as well throw it in the garbage can and buy a new one.” Often we also treat people this way. We say: “Well, he has a problem with drinking; well, she is quite depressed; well, they have mismanaged their business…we’d better not take the risk of working with them.” When we dismiss people out of hand because of their apparent woundedness, we stunt their lives by ignoring their gifts, which are often buried in their wounds. We all are bruised reeds, whether our bruises are visible or not. The compassionate life is the life in which we believe that strength is hidden in weakness and that true community is a fellowship of the weak" (Henri Nouwen). Who comes to mind as you read this? How might you share in the ministry of God’s Servant of healing and strengthening the weak and oppressed? What parts of you are “bruised” or “dimly burning?” Do these areas distance you from God or do they open you all the more to his merciful grace? V - Verbalize (Pray about your thoughts and emotions.) Lord, you are near to the brokenhearted and save the crushed in spirit. I lift up to You the brokenness and dimly burning wick of XXXX, whom You brought to mind during this show and this meditation. I come to You and offer You my own brokenness and emptiness, and ask You to fan our unsteady flames into brightly burning lights this Lent. Lord, hear my prayer.
