Why We Sing
Summary: Why We Sing is a podcast where we explore our motivation for singing and how our lives and the world around us is changed when we sing. Our goal is to help you feel empowered and more purpose-driven as you add a little more music and song to your life.
Today's guest is Blake Brandes, a music producer and free-styling hip hop artist who appeared on America's Got Talent and gave a TEDx talk and now tours the country giving hip hop motivational school assemblies about growth mindset and grit and hosting the Motivational Millennial podcast. Blake and I talk about rap and singing and how hip hop culture can positively affect youth and correct the negative story we might tell ourselves. He ends with a fun freestyle about music, motivation and Stevie Wonder!
Max Mendez, an Idaho-based singer and conductor, joins the show to talk about leadership, the egalitarian nature of choirs, how singing teaches grit, and how singing builds a strong sense of community. He shares ideas on how to create opportunities to engage people who might not identify as singers and how singing can help students better handle stress.
This episode features Mike Collier as he shares how singing in boys choirs in his youth kept him in school and helped him adapt as a new immigrant and find a loving adoptive family. Singing has played a role in the success of his 40-year marriage, maintaining many long-term friendships and is a unifying force in his work as a political activist.
This episode features choral director Geoffrey Boers as we discuss how he discovered his voice, a profound Bach performance with Peter Sellers, servant leadership, "to do then to know", Baltic music and vulnerability.
Today's guest on Why We Sing is Cynthia Vaughn, a voice teacher, performer, author, small business owner and community leader. We talk about how music can be a means of developing identity and bringing people together. She shares the impact of singing on her students and the beauty of seeing people gather together in the street to sing a song at a painted piano.
In this intro episode of Why We Sing, I share why I sing and how music has impacted my life. I also share my hopes for this podcast and what you can expect in future episodes. Those reasons include how singing has allowed me to feel safe, accepted, empowered, confident, courageous, balanced, happy and more.
