Photo Taco – Lightroom: 2 Bugs and Catalog Backup | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:47

Jeff Harmon talks about 2 Lightroom bugs that he has had a lot of questions on from listeners: 1) In 2015.10 / 6.10 when round tripping from Lightroom to Photoshop an error message saying that the Camera Raw plug-in is not version 9.10 is coming up even though Photoshop is fully updated and has the very latest version of the Camera Raw plug-in 2) Back in 2015.8 / 6.8 an error message about the catalog backup being 4GB was shown even though the catalog file and the backup were not actually that big. Jeff walks through Lightroom Catalog backups, how it works, recommendations for how to set it up, and why it is this 4GB message isn't a problem because it was incorrectly coming up in version 2015.8 but even it if was accurate it isn't something to worry about.  Photo Taco – AFMA Explained! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:49

Jeff Harmon answers year old listener question from Improve Photography writer Aaron Taylor: Here's a Photo Taco episode if there ever was one: AF Microadjust/Fine Tune. Why do it? When to do it? How important? Is it obsessive or necessary? Use a Lenscal device or just something you print yourself? Jeff talks about how autofocus micro adjustment (AFMA) is something specific to DSLR cameras, not needed and therefore not offered in mirrorless cameras. Not all DSLR cameras have the feature to do AFMA, but if it does then it is something worth doing - especially if you shoot portraits using narrow depth of field. Jeff talked about an 11 point setup needed to do AFMA: 1. Set your shooting mode to aperture priority. You can do this in manual mode but since you will be putting your camera on a tripod we don’t really care what the shutter speed is so that is one less thing to worry about. 2. Set your aperture to the very widest setting, which means the very smallest number possible. If you have an f/2.8 lens set it to 2.8. If you have one that opens up to 1.8 or 1.4 then set it there. If your lens doesn’t go any wider (again the smallest aperture number) than 5.6 then you really don’t need to do this AFMA process. 3. Set ISO to 100. You need to get images as clean as possible so you don’t want to increase the ISO. 4. Set the focus point to use the single, center focus point. With some cameras you could get away with other setups but this is the safest way to get the most accuracy. 5. Set your focus mode to single shot on Canon, af-s on Nikon. Again, this is a setting that will get the most accuracy out of phase detect autofocus that you are testing. 6. Turn off image stabilization if it is available on the lens. We are setting up something very controlled here and in this controlled situation image stabilization could cause image problems making you think it is an autofocus problem. 7. Good amount of light. Phase detection autofocus is most accurate with plenty of light so it is better to either do AFMA outdoors or add a lot of artificial light indoors. 8. Use a tripod. You will be comparing images to one another in order to figure out what the AFMA value should be set to and this is much easier when they are all exactly the same. 9. The camera needs to be as level with the target as you can make it. Don’t have the target significantly above or below the camera. 10. The camera needs to be a specific distance from the target. As a general rule of thumb you multiple the focal length of the lens by 50. For example, if the focal length is 24mm you multiply that by 50 to get 1200 millimeters which is 1.2m or roughly 4 feet. There are a few online calculators you can use to get more precise measurements that I will put links to in the show notes. 11. If you have done AFMA with this lens previously, set it to 0. Then Jeff outlines 3 methods or processes to doing AFMA that seem to have almost equal support in the photography community with fanboys for each one: 1. Ruler method - setting up a ruler target on a 45 degree angle and then shooting shots with different AFMA values set through the camera menu to find which one most consistently results with sharp focus right where the focus point was placed in the scene. You can use DIY targets here with a ruler or tape measure, but paid for targets simplify things and are nicer to use. 2. Software calibration. Tethering your computer to your computer you can have software figure out what AFMA value most consistently has sharp focus where the focus point is. The most popular of that software by what seemed on overwhelming majority is FoCal from Reiken. 3. Dot Tune method invented by Fred Miranda. Ingenious out of the box thinking that leverages a comparison between contrast detection autofocus and phase de...

 Photo Taco – Keywording Like a Pro | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:08

Jeff Harmon talks through three mini-topics and then shares how to use the keywording features of Lightroom like a Pro including the Keyword Tags box, Keyword Suggestions box, and the Keyword Set box of the Keywording panel along with the Keyword List panel in the Library Module. The three mini-topics covered: 1)Lightroom bug with macOS where panels and film strip all go black. Solution is to right click on the Lr icon in the dock, choose hide, then right click again and choose Show. 2) Jeff's workflow for moving photos from SSD to slower storage when a shoot is done. He used to recommend doing the move inside the Library module of Lightroom but based on a recommendation from Victoria Bampton he does it using Finder or Windows Explorer outside of Lightroom to lessen chances of having problems. 3) Confirmed bug in latest release of Lightroom in version 2015.10/6.10 where it is falsely saying that the ACR (Camera Raw) feature of Photoshop is not the latest version. The message can safely be ignored and just click the Open Anyway button until it is fixed in an upcoming 2015.11/6.11 release.  Photo Taco – State of the Updates Q1 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:09

Jeff Harmon provides his view on the current state of major software updates for photographers including Windows 10 Creator's Update, Apple macOS Sierra (10.12.4), Lightroom CC 2015.9/6.9, Luminar, and On1 Photo 2017. ====================== Advertisers for this episode: 1) improvephotographyplus.com, free two week trial and only $19.99 to subscribe 2) Luminar post-processing software $69 but get $10 off using coupon code PHOTOTACO at checkout ====================== Before going through all of those applications and his recommendation to apply those updates, he briefly follows up on a couple of things that were missed in the previous Memory Cards Explained episode. Jeff recommends a good and fast card reader to decrease your changes of corrupting your memory card and recovery software that can help photographers get out of a jam if they do have a memory card get corrupted or accidentally format. ====================== Here is the status of the updates as of Q1 2017: 1) Windows 10 Creator's Update - Hold off for a few weeks if you can (Windows 10 Home users are going to be updated no matter what). Jeff has applied the update and other than an issue that seems related to an Nvidia Graphics Card update has had not issues so far but the update is far too knew to recommend applying it. 2) Apple macOS Sierra - All clear status, macOS Sierra has for several months had the Photo Taco seal of approval. As with all updates there are some that have issues but for the most part things have gone well and you are very likely to have things go great. 3) Lightroom CC 2015.9/6.9 - All clear status, gets the Photo Taco seal of approval. Some listeners and Adobe forum posts have reported minor (and very strange) issues, but it the relatively straight forward workaround of resetting preferences has fixed the trouble. Most everyone who has updated has had it go well and there are some good bug fixes that should make Lightroom more stable. 4) Luminar 1.1.4. Hold off for now, too new to know how it is going to go. Very nice update process and very encouraged by what MacPhun is doing with Luminar. 5) On1 Photo 2017.0.2 - Jeff doesn't have enough personal experience to know if the update is causing challenges, he is going to be getting much more experience with the software over the summer of 2017 and will be providing a full review similar to the review of Luminar in a previous Photo Taco episode. ====================== Links mentioned in the episode: Kingston Digital USB 3.0 Hi-Speed Media Reader (FCR-HS4) ($18): http://amzn.to/2ocoI3y Lexar Image Rescue ($34): http://www.lexar.com/imagerescue SanDisk RescuePro ($40): http://www.lc-tech.com/pc/sandisk-rescuepro-and-rescuepro-deluxe/ Zero Assumption Recovery (free): http://www.z-a-recovery.com Lightroom 2015.9 / 6.9 updates: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2017/03/lightroom-cc-2015-9-now-available.html Photoshop 2017.1 updates: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/whats-new.html#fixed_issues ====================== Other Photo Taco Resources: Vote for Jeff’s “Cull” module idea to be added to Lightroom: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/less_redundancy_actions_during_import_into_lr_instant_rating_during_import Photo Taco Archive: http://improvephotography.com/category/taco/ iTunes review link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/photo-taco-quick-photography/id980781096?mt=2# Facebook Photo Taco Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/phototaco/ Photo Taco Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/phototacopodcast/ Photo Taco email: phototacopodcast@gmail.com Jeff’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/harmon_jeff Jeff’s Facebook Page: https://www.

Photo Taco – Lightroom on Two Computers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:51

Jeff Harmon offers 3 Lightroom tips based on questions that were asked at or just after the Improve Photography Retreat in March 2017. Tip #1: Lightroom Keyboard Shortcuts. It will increase the speed of your photography workflow if you will learn the Lightroom Keyboard Shortcuts. Bring up an overlay of the shortcuts available where you are at in Lightroom by using command-/ on Mac or ctrl-/ on Windows. Tip #2: Lens Recognition. Sometimes Lightroom does not correctly identify the lens correction profile to apply to your photo automatically. You can teach Lightroom which profile to use with your specific lens by doing "Save New Lens Profile Defaults" after manually applying the correct lens profile. Tip #3: Lightroom on Two Computers. This is NOT using the same Lightroom Catalog on two different computers at the same time. That is not a supported function in Lightroom today and you are asking for trouble if you attempt to do that. This is using Lightroom on a laptop when mobile and on a desktop at home and how to get the edits made in Lightroom on your laptop over to your desktop when you return. There are many options for this but the one I prefer is exporting a catalog to an external drive from the laptop and then importing that catalog to the desktop. Links mentioned in the episode: 1.  Photo Taco – Client Proofs and Culling | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:33

Jeff Harmon answers listener question from Angela Norton who loved the Culling Like a Pro episode but came away from it wondering something: Angela: Jeff Harmon LOVED this episode. I ignored it in my feed, because I thought I was doing good with culling...LOL... My question is, how are you presenting client proofs? If they are able to give stars, I'm assuming you using something with adobe cloud? Or maybe I misunderstood, and you are presenting in-person. ((Thanks so much for all you do!)) Jeff details how it is he uses the Zenfolio (not an advertisement) web hosting service to accomplish this task and send low resolution proofs to clients so that they can pick the shots they want to be professionally post-processed. This episode was sponsored by improvephotographyplus.com and by MacPhun where listeners can get $10 off their Luminar post-processing software using coupon code "PHOTOTACO" at checkout or by using this link macphun.evyy.net/c/362006/185399/3255.  Photo Taco – Instagram Like A Pro | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:44

Jeff Harmon gets expert advice from Instagrammer Josh Packer (@packtography) on how to grow your Instagram account. Within a couple of year Josh has grown his following to better than 50,000 without following many people. They walk through the following questions and more in the episode: How did you build up the following you have today? With only 385 posts on your @packtopgraphy account, and seeing how often you post to it since I am one of those thousands of followers, it can’t be very old? What was your original goal when you started your IG accounts? Has it led to clients for your photography? How much time do you spend on IG? Do you use any tools to post? Do you think the name of the account is important to getting followers? Is it important to keep a small number of following compared to followers? Do certain types of photos seem to do better than others? Have you run contests to expand your following? Do hastags make a difference on expanding your following? What is your strategy with hashtags? Do you use a tool for your hastagging? My own following is only at about 1,000 right now, BTW everyone can follow me @harmonjeff and the official account for the podcast @phototacopodcast, but I have two goals for IG and would like to hear your advice on how to get there because I think listeners will have a similar situation I want to bring attention to this podcast I want to market my landscape photography to people who want to buy landscape scenes from Utah You seem to be using the Story feature on IG quite a bit, have you seen that help expand your audience?  Photo Taco – Luminar vs Lightroom | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:12

Jeff Harmon goes over 10 observations he has made comparing the new Luminar software from MacPhun with the old market leader in Adobe Lightrooom. 1. Non-live histogram 2. Layers Concept 3. Eraser tool (spot removal) 4. Deniose tool (noise reduction) 5. Filters 6. Presets 7. Before/After views 8. Saving 9. Overall speed 10. Pricing Jeff LOVES where MacPhun is going with Luminar and thinks they already have a very feature rich post-processing application here. However, the recommendation for photographers starting here in February 2017 is Lightroom. Start with the stand-alone version of Lightroom for $150 and master it. When you get to the point where you need to do something with a photo that can't be done in Lightroom then go to the Adobe Creative Cloud for Photographers subscription for $10/mo. Keep an eye on MacPhun and their Luminar product though because they are thinking about things differently, have a newer code base to work from, and they are going places fast enough Jeff could easily see Luminar becoming his recommendation for photographers just getting started.  Photo Taco – Choosing Which Lens To Buy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 43:23

Jeff Harmon brings on guest host Brent Bergherm to answer two listener questions about buying lenses: Steve Blacket: I need to upgrade a lens. I keep looking at different lenses; Nikon, Tamron, Sigma.... It is really tough to decide as every lens has reviews that point out faults. Do you have any advice on choosing lenses or maybe a Podcast topic for a future episode. I shoot Nikon crop sensor and have been looking at full frame lenses. My kit zoom just does not give me sharp images. Anyone else have input?? Catherine Johnson: Continuing the theme on lenses. If we get a podcast on them, Jeff Harmon, could there be some mention on third-party lenses? I'm considering jumping ship from Canon to Sony and Sharky James talks a lot about Samyang lenses. I'm running into controversy on which is better - that brand or Rokinon for Sony e-mount. Jeff and Brent talk about the following when answering the questions: -Samyang vs Rokinon vs Bower They are exactly the same Korean manufacturer, producing lenses that have high image quality but a little bit lower build quality. In fact, Bower is a 3rd brand name for the same manufacturer. From what I have read there isn’t any real difference between them and the different names were supposed to be for marketing purposes in different regions of the world. The more recent lenses they have produced have increased their build quality, but they are plastic lenses held together by glue and small screws. They produce sharp, high quality images, but they might fall a bit more into the “disposable” lens category where you shouldn’t expect them to live through harsh conditions or last for lots of years. Perfect for a lower budget like I have as a hobbyist photographer. They also mostly offer only fully manual lenses. Manual focus and manual aperture. Again, a way to produce a lens that is much less expensive. Jeff has a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 lens that I picked up on Black Friday in 2016. He has tried it out a couple of times but haven’t really had a good chance to use it yet as my intention is to get Milky Way shots with it and it isn’t the season for it here in Utah. -The process Brent used to determine which lenses he was going to make available in his business? -Should you take into account the reviews from Amazon or other online stores? Do we recommend that a photographer consider those reviews? -What about 3rd party lenses? How would you Brent rank the biggest of the third party vendors like Tamron, Tokina, Sigma, and Rokinon/Samyang, Zeiss. -Are there any lens brands to make sure to completely avoid? -What about buying a lens used? What would you look for? -What about buying lenses made for full frame to use on crop sensor bodies?  Photo Taco – What Makes a Lens “Fast” and T-Stops | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:04

Jeff Harmon answers two listeners questions, that became 3 listener questions: Amber Davidson: Have you ever done a podcast on lens speed? I've heard people refer to a lens as "fast" but not all same aperture lenses are considered equal. Could you explain which lenses are ideal for sports and or children due to their ability to focus faster than other vs which you could use for everyday situations? Sidney Kantor: This now has me curious...if two lenses have the same aperture but one lens is just physically bigger, would the bigger lens let in more light and therefore be faster? This sounds like a good topic for a podcast. Jeff talks about fast lenses being those with lower number maximum aperture or f-stop values because that allows the shutter speed to be higher or "fast". He also talks about how lenses can affect autofocus speeds and that f-stops are not entirely accurate on lenses so that two of the same lenses even when the same make or model let in different amounts of light. This is why t-stop is used with lenses made for film makers and because a t-stop lens is actually measure with the amount of light let in and marked accordingly.
