New research by McKinsey shows that China’s retail banking market is on track to become the second largest in the world by 2015, after only the US. For Chinese banks, capturing growth will require taking a different approach than they have in the past, one that focuses on implementing leaner cost structures and gearing service models around customer needs. China seems to have an insatiable thirst for energy. McKinsey research predicts that China will drive as much as one-quarter of the world’s incremental demand for energy through the year 2030. It’s official – China is now mostly an urban nation. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, urban dwellers now account for more than 51% of China’s population of nearly 1.35 billion. That’s 690 million people, a number the McKinsey Global Institute expects will reach one billion by the year 2030. Now that China has passed this historic threshold, what are some of the changes we should expect going forward?
