The questions for this episode include: Hello there.  I'm a programmer and am just getting started in niche websites.  I'm having a lot of difficulty coming up with keywords.  Any suggestions? Top reasons why your site is not ranking in Google Do I need to know how to code to use WordPress? How to find out what your competition is ranking for in Google The best tips & tricks to stay Focused The Curtis-hanger for the episode: Lift for iOS and now Android too. Lift is free app for iOS that I've found to be really interesting. Basically, the premise is that you use the search tool and select a habit that you'd like to form.  Once you've found it, then you join in with  a group.  Each day that you do that habit, you press the big check mark.  It tracks your efforts over time.  But as you do this, your also a part of a group of others with the same goal.  You can give those people props (like or plus one) to help encourage them or give them a comment.  You can also set the app to remind you to do something at a certain time each day. James Gill on GoSquared as an alternative for Google Analytics Meet the young entrepreneur James Gill. Cheerful, friendly and really talkative ;-) Officially "James is the CEO and co-founder of GoSquared, a real-time analytics company serving over 40,000 sites around the world." About The Interview James works as CEO of the company GoSquared, which gives you real time analytics about your website(s). Or as the slogan reads on their home page: "The analytics you need to improve your website faster". The interview takes place at the co-working space where James has his office. He finds it an inspirational place to work where talking to other entrepreneurs gives him new ideas, and keeps him motivated. The co-working space is a bit noisy, so we had to break half way in the interview for him to move to a quieter place.  Episode 035 – Links for Articles; SEO Basics; Rankings; Favicons & Get Rich Quick | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 45:09

In this podcast: We tell you the only way to get rich quickly; Guest posting the 2014 way; Do you really know your SEO basics?; The differences in ranking between Google and the rest and How to add a Favicon. Remember, when you are listening, it always helps us out if you visit:  http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and share that you are listening on twitter (or if you just want to say hello!). The questions for this episode include: Hello.  I recently received an email from someone asking if I would be interested in them providing free content for my website.  In exchange, they would be able to put a back link in the article.  Is this spam or for real?  The real Basics you should know when it comes to SEO. I don't understand these rankings.  I use LongTail Pro to check my rank and I'm really high in Bing, but +500 in yahoo and google.  Is something wrong with my sites or something else? How to add a Favicon in 1,2,3 The only get rich quick scheme that works. The Curtis-hanger for the episode: Fantastical 2 for iPhone Their are a few things i really, really like about it.  One thing that I really like about it is that you can use it for both appointments and reminders.  It connects to both of apples built in counter parts, so you don't even have to configure this. The biggest thing I like about it though is that it understands native language.  So, whether I'm using siri to say it or writing it in when adding an appointment or reminder, all i have to do is say or write something like"record podcast with Chris at 9am tomorrow".  So you don't have to mess with all these different check off boxes.  It automatically understands to schedule the appointment, give it a title and connect Chris as also being in the appointment. It has a lot of different notification options and can do both time based and location based reminders, along with storing an associated URL or notes.  Interview With Neil Patel of QuickSprout | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:17

Neil Patel on QuickSprout, Crazy Egg, KISSmetrics and Hello Bar Meet the ever friendly Neil Patel in this "compact" interview where he talks about KISSmetrics and Crazy Egg, and the odd-one-out Hello Bar. Officially "Neil Patel is the co-founder of Crazy Egg, Hello Bar, and KISSmetrics. He helps companies like Amazon, NBC, GM, HP and Viacom grow their revenue. The Wall Street Journal calls him a top influencer on the web and Entrepreneur Magazine says he created one of the 100 most brilliant companies in the world. He was recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by President Obama and one of the top 100 entrepreneurs under the age of 35 by the United Nations. Neil has also been awarded Congressional Recognition from the United States House of Representatives." About The Interview Reading the above official introduction, you must agree with me that this is already quite an accomplishment. Neil even has a Wikipedia entry. I tried to make one myself (about myself), and before I could hit Submit, I think it was already deleted. In the interview he also explains where his slogan "I'm kind of a big Deal" comes from. Three immediate things anyone can do to increase their web traffic according to Neil (these work even after Google's Penguin 2.1 update): Guest posting on other blogs Write epic content Create InfoGraphics (good quality ones) that can be shared across the web Interview Links Link to Neil's blog: http://quicksprout.com (and how to reach him) 30-Day FREE Trial of Original Heat-Mapping Technology at CrazyEggg - START FREE TRIAL! (affiliate link, thank you for using it if you do!) In a recent video posted on webmaster's Youtube channel, Matt says PageRank is going to go away sometime soon.  What do you think? The Curtis-hanger for the episode: A very inexpensive alternative to Photoshop on the Mac called Pixelmator Great for photo editing Great for creating banners and editing blog images Many tutorials on the pixelmator website that you can follow along with, especially for making headers. Remember, when you are listening, it always helps us out if you visit:  http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and share that you are listening on twitter (or if you just want to say hello!). The questions for this episode include: What is the Google Disavow Tool and how do I use it? I'm just getting into building niche sites.  Is there some period of time I should wait before installing Adsense on my sites?  I just want to make sure I'm good with Google, not doing things too fast. I created a sitemap on my site.  Do i still need to submit it to Webmaster tools? What do we use now that Google Keyword Tool is no longer available?  Does Keyword Planner work the same way? What is a simple way to secure my WordPress site? The Curtis-hanger for the episode: Tab like a pro in Chrome An extension called Tab Ahead Sometimes, if you get a bunch of tabs open at the same time, it can be difficult to find the tab you want to be using.  With tab ahead, all you have to do is click on the extension and start typing.  It searches the title of the page and the URL.  Or you can just click alt+T to search.  Episode 031 – Drip Feed Articles; Skype Recording; Missing WordPress Login; Blocking Visitors & Changing URLs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 46:05

In this podcast: Google Updates: - Drip Feed Articles; Skype Recording; Missing WordPress Login; Blocking Visitors & Changing URLs Remember, when you are listening, it always helps us out if you visit:  http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and share that you are listening on twitter (or if you just want to say hello!). The questions for this episode include: What's an appropriate amount of time to drip feed new articles to one of my micro sites?  I am going to order a bulk package of about 10 articles that are 400 to 500 words long with two at 800 words.  I don't want to post them too fast. How do you record a skype call?  Any free methods? I was working in my functions.php file in WordPress and when I went back to my site, everything was gone, even the login page.  What do I do? I was wondering if there is a way to block people visiting my sites.  I just discovered someone has copied my site article by article.  Their site also looks like mine. I have a podcast and a supporting website.  Soon I'm changing URLs.  How do I solve this with my iTunes Podcast Feed? The Curtis-hanger for the episode: Google Privacy Settings for using your name and image in advertisements. So Google made some recent terms of service updates.  They have a new "feature" and I use that word loosely, called Shared Endorsements.  As an example, say you have a friend that searches for Italian food and an advertisement shows up for a a restaurant that you rated in something like Google reviews, your profile picture, name and a review may appear, like it is part of the ad itself.  They could also take any comments you've made about it in other google services and put it right in the ad.  This can be of great concern to people who get paid to give an opinion. Curtis:  So to make the adjustment to turn this off, Go to Google Plus, then click settings in the toolbar on the left, then click on Shared Endorsements and click edit.  At the bottom of the screen, you will see a check box that says based upon my activity, Google may show my name and profile picture in shared endorsements that appear in ads.  Uncheck this box and then click save.  Episode 030 – Google Updates – Hummingbird & Penguin 2.1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:36

In this podcast: Google Updates: - Hummingbird & Penguin 2.1 Remember, when you are listening, it always helps us out if you visit:  http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and share that you are listening on twitter (or if you just want to say hello!). The questions for this episode include: To start with, why are these updates happening, where can I find more info on them and which sites are affected? What is Google Penguin?  What is the latest 2.1 Penguin Update?  What does it mean? What does this whole thing have to do with the Hummingbird update? When do I know my site has been hit? What do you need to do if you have been hit?  In other words, how do you recover from this update? The Curtis-hanger for the episode: Facebook privacy settings change Facebook made a fairly significant change to the way it handles a certain type of post.  For any post that you created in the past, if you set it to public, anyone could see it, or if you set it to friends of friends, then those friends that your friends have could see it. However, now, both of those types of posts are going to be completely public.  I know quite a few people who have done posts with the friends of friends setting, so this would affect every post that they've set like that, making them all available for public view. To change this, go into your Facebook settings, then privacy settings, then pick limit posts you've shared with friends of friends or public.  Facebook will then give you a warning, then select limit old posts.  Episode 028 – Title Length; More Exact Match Domains; Blocking IP’s in Analytics; Marketing Videos & Update’s on Summer Reading. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:58

In this episode of the podcast, we talk about: Title Length; More Exact Match Domains; Blocking IP's in Analytics; Marketing Videos & Update's on Summer Reading. Remember, when you are listening, it always helps us out if you visit:  http://listeningtochrisandcurtis.com and share that you are listening on twitter (or if you just want to say hello!). The questions for this episode include: When creating a new blog post, does title length matter?  Am I better with a short title that might be good for SEO or a longer title that might catch an audience better? Given Google's recent updates, should we still be using exact match domains?  I don't see many micro niche sites on page 1 anymore. Can you block an IP address in Google Analytics?  I want to remove myself (my home and my work), so that I have a more accurate idea of how much traffic I am getting. What are some inexpensive ways to spread our videos?  And how much weight do these actually carry in terms of boosting our rankings? An update on books we've read or listened to over the summer. The Curtis-hanger for the episode: How to get autocomplete on your mac, like you have on the iphone. This may not be the most useful tip in the world, but I found it interesting for a couple reasons.  If you've ever had a long word to spell and can't quite remember how to spell it, in many apps on your mac, and especially the apple apps, you can start a word, then press the combination of option+escape to pull up a list of words that contain what you've written.
