Measles & Whooping Cough: Outbreaks & Your Child | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Vaccines have reduced infections like measles and whooping cough. However, not all parents vaccinate.Measles is caused by a virus that can spread easily through the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs and someone nearby inhales the infected droplets. It can also be transmitted by direct contact with fluids from the nose or mouth of an infected person. Healthy lungs are crucial to your child's well-being. But, without proper protection, the lungs can get infections that could cause chronic and sometimes life-threatening illnesses. The Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine has made most children immune. However, not all parents are choosing to vaccinate their children. This can put many other children at serious risk.  Recent news coverage of certain TV and movie stars has exposed their decision to not vaccinate. While it is each parent's own right to do what they want, celebrities may have an impact on "regular" parents in regards to making the safest choice. Special guest, Dr. Tanya Altmann, weighs in on this controversial issue. If you know a parent that is considering not vaccinating, this segment may just change their mind.

Triamcinolone Acetonide Nasal Spray Moves OTC | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

FDA approves steroid triamcinalone acetonide (TAA) nasal spray to be sold over-the-counter. Are there any risks? If you have allergies, you know the worst time of year is when the seasons begin to change. Allergies leave your nose runny, your sinuses stuffed and your mood completely miserable. Did you know that one in five people in the U.S. have allergies or asthma symptoms? In fact, 55 percent of the U.S population tests positive for more than one allergen. Usually you'd have to get a prescription from your physician in order to get your allergies in control. Not anymore. Recently, the FDA voted 10-6 in a favor to allow the steroid triamcinolone acetonide (TAA) to be sold over the counter, allowing allergy sufferers more easily available treatment options. Nasal steroids are the most common relief for allergy sufferers, giving release to itchy, runny, stuffy and dry nose. Nasal sprays that contain triamcinolone acetonide are the only products used to eliminate ALL these symptoms in one prescription and is considered a first line treatment for allergy sufferers. Are there any concerns when using nasal spray with triamcinolone acetonide? One major risk is the use in children. Even though it is approved to be used in children ages two and up, the possible side effect of slow growth rate is a concern. Some other concerns regard those patients who also use asthma medication, prescription steroid medicine, infections or if you've had nasal surgery. As always, it is very important to discuss any concerns or questions you have before taking or allowing your children to take the medicine. Executive Associate Dean, Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, Janet P. Engle, PhD joins Melanie Cole, MS to discuss the recent changes with OTC allergy nasal spray, risks, effectiveness and other ways to reduce your symptoms of allergies.

Antibiotic Overuse Can Put You at Risk | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Are you over-medicating yourself every time you get a simple cough? Know when you should and should not use antibiotics. Are physicians prescribing too much medication? A recent study in the British medical journal discussed delaying prescription drug use, specifically antibiotics. Dr. Rade Vukmir, an expert in the area of antibiotics joins Dr. Leigh to discuss this study, as well as the proper use of antibiotics. Often, people seek medical assistance at the first sign of a cough and do not let an illness "run it's course." Instead, they rush to a doctor or emergency department to get a prescription. This could actually be weakening your defenses for the next time you are really sick and actually need antibiotics. The resistance may not be effective with overuse. The next time you are sick, seek medical attention, but ask your doctor if a prescription is truly the best course of action. Sometimes there is a need for medication, just be sure that you know when that is.

Are You Teaching Your Kids Bad Phone Habits? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Are you using your smartphone around your children? Could your behavior with your device have a negative effect on them? Many a parent has turned to a smartphone or tablet during a restaurant outing with children. How does this mobile device use affect parent-child interactions? Researchers recently sought to describe patterns of how caregivers and children use mobile devices around each other. In the study, "Patterns of Mobile Device Use by Caregivers and Children During Meals in Fast Food Restaurants," published in the April 2014 Pediatrics (published online March 10), researchers observed 55 caregivers eating with one or more young child in fast food restaurants. The researchers wrote detailed field notes, describing how the caregivers used their mobile devices and how they interacted with the children. Researchers described how "absorbed" the caregiver was in the device, how children responded when caregivers used a device and how caregivers managed this behavior, and co-viewing or shared use of devices by caregivers and children. Caregivers who used devices ranged from having the device on the table to almost constant absorption with the device throughout the meal. Some children accepted the lack of engagement and entertained themselves; others acted out in a bid for attention. The study raises several questions for future research, including what types of activity (eg, work, entertainment) on mobile devices are associated with the highest levels of caregiver absorption, and what are the long-term effects on child development from caregivers who frequently become absorbed with a device while spending time with their children. Dr. David Hill discusses the results of the study, as well as the significant impact smartphone use can have on those around you.
