Ten Commandments of Health for 2017 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:11:07

JayWalk.JayTalk-10 Commandments of Health for the New Year! December 31, 2016 | JayWalk   1. EAT REAL FOOD- this may seem obvious to you- "Of course I eat real food, what other kind is there? Well, in our modern, processed food jungle, there are all too many fake, "food like substances" that really don't qualify as food. Such as fast food, genetically modified and engineered substances like modern wheat, vegetable oils and margarine that are industrial seed oils only fit for machine lubricants, all kinds of candies and soda pop and artificial sweeteners and I can't even begin to list them all! Just remember: if it's from a bag or a box, it's probably not real food. 2. Drink a Green Smoothie Daily. "Well that doesn't sound very Natural or Paleo!" I can hear you say. Sure, you can just eat about a pound of greens, cruciferous veggies, some berries, every day. And you and put turmeric and coconut milk on them, wash them down with green tea mixed with ginger, and also quaff some kefir mixed with kelp powder... but wouldn't it be easier by far to just put them all in a Vitamix for a week's worth all at once, put in canning jars in the fridge for breakfast each day? Or even to make a daily one in a Nutribullet each day?? Besides, it saves a LOT of chewing, and all the fiber is still all there. 3. Sleep 8 hours per night. This does't sound too sexy or earthshaking either, does it? But, that is just the point- there really important things that you do on a regular, daily basis, make all the difference in your health and wellness. And sleep is every bit as important as our next commandment, although no one brags about it like they do: 4.Exercise Daily. This includes stretching! Everyone loves to talk about how much, and how avidly, they exercise! Or, almost everyone. Especially those who exercise too much- the crazily chronically cardio, who seem to think the most important thing in life is to burn more calories than anyone else! (It's not- we are human "chemical factories", not machines, that only run on calories burned. Our complex systems run on hormones, amount of muscle and bone built, and most of all on NUTRIENTS. We need high quality, natural, REAL FOOD. (See Commandment #1) We all need strength work, walking (preferably barefoot), along with some cardio- however, if you do high rep bodyweight resisted exercise, you are combining strength work with 'High Intensity' cardio, all together. Skip the weights, (along with the long distance cardio) and try this instead! 5. Meditate and/or Pray. They are much the same- by putting practical, immediate conscious thought away for a time, we commune through our unconscious self-our subconscious mind- that part of us that represents our truest self, with the divine and with that Nature that is all around us. 10 - 20 minutes per day is adequate for most, and just like adequate sleep, it enables us to be our best selves. 6. Cultivate Your 'Tribe'. Now, your tribe could be lots of things: your family and relatives, your neighbors, your church body, or even a close group of good friends. Or any combination thereof; only you know who is truly important to you. Don't let them slip away! We are all social people, and an individual without a tribe is a sad thing, destined for unhappiness and dissatisfaction with life. 7. Do Not Eat Fake Foods. This is the antithesis of commandment number 1, which is so important we need to point out its negative side- bad processed foods. "Love your body as you love yourself"- don't load it with various poisons and anti-nutrients that will compromise your health, leaving your vulnerable to auto-immune and other diseases. Skip the Oreos, the jelly-belly's, Taco Bell and McDonald's, chips and doodles. They really do destroy health, just not right away. Like cigarettes, they have been chemicalized and loaded with all sorts of enticemen

Do it Now- Try Everything Paleo | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:15:36

I’m sorry to be so corny about my subject this week, but lately I’ve come to think that this kind of sums up the whole “life” thing. I mean, it is so wonderful to have the knowledge and ability to control our own health! It would have been inconceivable just a few years ago when we all thought that the government and medical clinics knew it all, and if we just relied on them, as we relied on mechanics to keep our cars going, we would be healthy and happy forever! For a price. And now, we have the Paleo diet and lifestyle, with all the research and the incredible wealth of scientific papers and books that back up the amazing effectiveness of just cleaning up our diets, as opposed to medicating ourselves to death. The power really is within us to regain and enhance our health and fitness. Not in the hands of far-off doctors and clinics and government agencies that will “save us”! And so, all should be well and good- we know what to eat: real foods, pastured and natural meats and eggs, vegetables and fruits free of chemical pesticides, grass fed dairy, coconut oil and some sweet and white potatoes. And we know what not to eat: grains, especially wheat rye and barley, anything GMO, processed and “low fat” foods of any type, fast food and especially SUGAR. And then, there are all the incredibly intuitive things that our great grandparents knew and we are just now rediscovering to be crucial: 1.Good Family and “tribal” relationships between friends and family 2.Solid sleep each night, at least 8 hours, in a totally dark room 3.Daily or near daily contact with Nature, immersed in a forest, or at least spending time in a park 4.Physical exercise on a regular, every day basis, including some form of strength and resistance training, lots of ground based sitting, squatting, and stretching. 5.Regular quiet moments of reflection and inwardness, either through religion and prayer, and/or via meditation. Of course, clean air and water are also crucial, but we all have to do there just the best that we can. For me, these two things alone are worth relocating to a more rural environment, but not everyone has that option. Just do the best you can, and try not to live in or near a really large, polluted city. But, if you can’t fix this, don’t worry about it for now. Just concentrate on the five points I just listed. I really think those are the BIG BULLET POINTS OF PALEO! There are lots of refinements and tweaks that can be explored, and I do that here on a weekly basis, and in my own life. You should too! Make “being healthy” one of your hobbies. BUT, those five points, along with the guidance of what to eat, and not to eat- that is the key! Why do so many either not start changing their lives to comply with these simple guidelines, or else do it for awhile, maybe a month or longer, and then stop and go back to their SAD American diet days? Reversing all the undeniable good they did for themselves and their health? Why do they decide to give up, and go back to eating cheese doodles and all the other sugary crap, and get back on the highway to headaches, heart attacks, autoimmune disease and body destroying pharmaceutical drugs along with endless surgeries?? Is eating fast food really worth that!!?? Looked at logically, of course it isn’t. But, unfortunately, most Paleo adopters do “fall off the wagon”, with some hardly even getting on, or else just subjectively “choosing” those more painless parts of it, and then claiming that the rest are “unimportant” at least to them, because they are immune and special. I am saddened by these choices. I know just how beneficial a paleo type of diet can truly be, how liberating, how self-enhancing of mind and body! So, I am glad to say that Robb Wolfe is writing a book on the subject, called Wired to Eat, which is almost completed. Here is the link: http://robbwolf.com/2016/12/07/wired-to-eat-coming-soon/

This is the final installment of A Barbarian in Chicago by Simon Stanton, read here around the paleo campfire.  For as we all know, heroic tales are paleo indeed, and nourish our minds and souls as they did in ages past, when heroic tales like The Odyssey, Beowulf, and The Tales of King Arthur inspired us all.

Once again, we return to heroic tales, which as everyone knows are very paleo indeed!  Today we resume with the adventures of the youth Wulf Gott, the young barbarian from the north, who was forced to transplant himself to Chicago, in Hyde Park to be exact, until he was forced to leave by the corrupt government and civilization into which he had been transplanted.  So let us resume, shall we, with Part 2 of A Barbarian in Chicago by Simon Stanton!

Paleo Campfire Stories in Memorium of Jerilyn Dinsmoor, Friend and Neighbor- Milky and Soupy Part 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:40:28

This episode is dedicated to our friend and neighbor Jerilyn Dinsmoor, who passes away all to soon at the age of 56.  I dedicate the gospel tune at the start and finish to her, since she has indeed crossed that final river and mountain.  All of us will miss her, since she was part of our neighborhood "tribe", and actually one of our leaders!  You were an inspiration, Jerilyn, and we wish all of the best for your bereaved husband Brad, and sons Derek and Trevor.  Hold tight to that "nail scarred hand!"

PJSC #135 Campfire Stories around the Paleo Campfire- “Milky and Soupy” by Jess Thornton Part 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:23:09

We all know that stories and tales are part of the ancestral, paleo lifestyle.  Vital, really- through stories and legends we have traditionally learned about ourselves and our families, and our tribes and peoples!  Let's resume that tradition, here at the cafe.  Here we are, all about the campfire, listening to music, and then stories, as the embers glow and we all huddle about the coals together...

Heroic Tales are Paleo Too! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:22:31

I fear I have dwelt too much on the small stuff of Paleo- what we eat, and how we exercise, and how we sleep a bit too much.  In fact, I think that is what has happened to virtually ALL Paleo podcasts over time- now, don’t get me wrong- all of that is crucial, and definitely the first step in gaining health along with a wonderful, fulfilling life.   But that is key: we also want an overall wonderful, fulfilling life!  We could sit in a laboratory run by Loren Cordain, never leaving, and have all of our life functions monitored, day and night, for nutritional excellence.  We could be trained by Frank and Christine Zane, and have perfect physiques.  Our sleep could be monitored by Chris Kresser, and Robb Wolfe could lecture us about Paleo each and every day, and yet…  Would THAT be a good life?? Obviously not.  And so, on my PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe podcast, I am going to start to explore the items that are listed on my blog page around the big blender: Featuring: Recipes, Health, Music and Philosophy! Side Dishes: Fun, Energy, Renewal, Life! All of these are just as important, at least, as nutrient composition and the raw ingredients of health.  And so, from now on, on PaleoJay’s Smoothie Cafe I will be stressing the really important parts of life- the music, the fun; all those things that bring us every, renewal, and life!  Don’t worry, Paleo Quick Tip of the Day still be there, coming out weekly, with more down-to-earth recommendations, shortly and succinctly!  (I am increasingly bothered by how paleo, and other podcasts are getting more and more long-winded- who has the time for all of that? Podcasts of an hour and more?  Sheesh, you can usually say it in 10 minutes or less- remember that brevity is the soul of wit. But today, we will start with a short story, read by your own PaleoJay!  It a new Conan short story, written by newcomer Jess Thornton, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  If you only know Conan the Barbarian character from comic books and the movies, you will come to see that the original version, as created by Robert E. Howard back in the 1930’s, is a very different animal indeed.  And so, get a large jar of your green paleo smoothie out, for here is the audio version of Conan Returns!
