 023 JGF, Goliath Grouper | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:49

Goliath Grouper, JGF Tales and Reports Podcast Episode 023 This week we learn more about the awesome Goliath Grouper in the Gulf of Mexico. Still protected from any harvesting to allow the species to repopulate in the region... these huge fish are a great catch and release sport for an experience of a lifetime. Our 1st guest is Captain Tom McLaughlin from Cape Haze Florida say's on catching a Goliath grouper, "I tell people it's like taking the heaviest tackle you've ever seen and attaching it to the bumper of a large pickup truck... it's a 5 min tug of war and many people have a tough time making it." www.anotherkeeper.com (Photos By McLaughlin w/permission) Our Next guest is Captain Jeff Shelar from Marathon Florida (Florida Keys) says, "You've got to lock the drag up and stop them because they'll go down to the bottom and break you off... They'll rip your arms off if you don't watch it... with their big broom tale movin, they can use it well." www.catch-em-all.com (Photos By Shelar w/permission) // Todays episode of JGF looks and sounds like some great offshore adventures in catching and releasing Goliath grouper. Goliath are also found in the Texas coastal waters for a great recreational sport fishing day. Checkout our JustGoFishin Offshore Directory. Texas State Record for Goliath Grouper is 551 lbs and caught by Gus Pangarakis on June 29th 1937. This record has certainly held on for a long time and likely to continue with the federal protection currently in place on these Goliath. Facebook Fishin Facts & Fables This week we asked the following questions and received some great answers from anglers from around the world. ____________ is a poor mans Tarpon.  022 JGF, Gargantuan Alligator Gar | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:40

Gargantuan Alligator Gar, JGF Tales and Reports Podcast Episode 022 One of the largest freshwater fish in the Unites States is the Alligator Gar and can be found right here in Texas. This prehistoric like fish is found in the Gulf coast states (Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas).  Angling for this unique freshwater predator has become more popular in the sport fishing industry. Captain Bubba Bedre talks about what it's like catching one of these Gargantuan Gars of the river. He say's, "there's two kinds of Alligator Gar, Lazy or Active. A lazy gar will feel like you're pulling in a log and an active gar will fight like a marlin." (Photos By Bedre w/permission) www.garfishingguide.com Host of Animal Planets "River Monsters" Jeremy Wade shows off a Giant Alligator Gar with Bubba Bedre. Picture below: Bubba Bedre is in the middle and Jeremy Wade on the right. Captain Mark Malfa from Houston Texas shares his enthusiasm for going after these monsters. He also was featured in Animal Planets "River Monsters" with Jeremy Wade. (Photos By Malfa w/permission) www.bigfishbowfishingtexas.com Captain Malfa from Houston say's, "the Alligator Gar is the poor mans Tarpon". There extremely hard to hook like a Tarpon." One of the reasons for the popularity of this fish is due to "bow fishing". This seems to be out of the mainstream of fishing but has become more popular. This gargantuan alligator gar is definitely one to put on your angling list of fish to go after. Looks and sounds like it would be a real kick in the pants to hook on to one of these monsters. // Facebook Fishin Facts & Fables This week we asked the following questions and received some great answers from anglers from around the world. Have you ever been stung by a stingray? What is you favorite bottom feeding fish to go after? What fish is like reeling in a big log?  021 JGF, Texas Giant Stingray Tales | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:29

JGF Tales and Reports Podcast Episode 021 Texas giant stingrays are plentiful along the Texas Coastal Bend and Captain John Little shows us how to catch one. Also, today we share the dangers that go along with wade fishing and what can happen if you encounter a stingray. A couple anglers share their stories on getting barbed by one of these nemesis creatures that lurk on the bottom. Hal Hargis, Houston Texas It took Hal six weeks to recover from his stingray barb. The pain was so excruciating while he traveled to the hospital that he wanted to marry  the nurse after she made the pain go away. The next day he stayed in the boat for some drift fishing. Hal Hargis, Houston Texas Showing off the results of a successful "Anglers Shuffle" Troy Malish, San Antonio Texas Troy while fishing the shoreline took what he thought precautions in getting barbed by a stingray. Wearing boots that he thought would provide him protection and turns out to be a run to the emergency room. Troy still wade fishes on Team OSO for trout and redfish or whatever he can catch but is more aware of the pain associated with stingrays. Troy Malish, San Antonio Texas Texas Giant Stingray Captain John Little with his family went out fishing for shark and ended up with a trophy sized Texas Giant Stingray. This stingray took about an 1:45 minutes to land on the boat at Port O' Conner Jetty area. He thought it might be a State record but the Texas Parks and Wildlife doesn't keep track of catch & release stingray. Captain John Little & Kids // Facebook Fishin Feedback This week on our FaceBook fan page we recieved some great answers to question we posted from anglers around the world. Whenever you travell with your fishing poles be sure to take off your weights so that they don't swing around your poles and score them. I've seen lots of poles broken from not taking weights off. Also, when your securing your hook on the eye of the rod, be sure to use the medal part of the eye and avoid the plastic parts. this will help keep your poles in great working order. Welcome to JGF Tales and Reports Podcast Episode 018 This week we investigate how to catch Giant Tarpon. Captain Clay Eavenson near Tampa Bay Florida and Captain Jamie Pinter share their experience as they go after these "Silver Kings". Captain Clay Eavenson Clay Eavenson calls this "hours of boredom interrupted by moments of chaos".  His techniques of patient fishing prepares anglers to manage massive resistance of a 200 lb tarpon. Giant Tarpon with Captain Clay Eavenson Great video of the action and power of a Giant Tarpon with Captain Clay Eavenson Captain Jamie Pinter Jamie Pinter out of Galveston Texas talks about Giant Tarpon Fishing Texas Style. Tarpon Fishing with Captain Jamie Pinter If your lookin to go after Giant Tarpon Fishin, we hope that this episode was helpful to you to giving you a better understanding of this type of fishing. We recommend either of the Tarpon Fishing Guides we've spoken to in our podcast. Texas Game Warden Watch with Chuck Ford Fishing reports from Port A look real good offshore this past week with catches of Ling, King fish, Wahoo, Amberjack and shark. The PINS area are catching Trout and Redfish on a low tide. Shark are also being caught with some large Amberjack. Most of the shark caught are black tips with a few hammerheads and bonnetheads. Keep safe out there. Little Fishing Tips with Captain John Little This weeks tip is keeping your hands out of the bait live wells. Hands can have sun block on them and/or whatever you ate for breakfast. This can actually kill your bait. Best to use water from the marina's bait tanks when getting started. Right now you can get Croaker, Piggy Perch, Mullet and shrimp. Mullet will be very hearty and last longer.  017 JGF, Gulf of Mexico Fishing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 51:34

Welcome to JGF Tales and Reports Podcast Episode 017 This week we are excited to share some interviews from fishing captains around the Gulf of Mexico. This summer with the worst oil spill in US history has added a lot of pressure to the fishing economy and anxiety to many people's livelihood. Now that the oil well is capped and work continues on the clean-up the fishing has been getting back to normal. Captain Trey Landry from the Florida Pan Handle shares his thoughts on the impact of the oil in his area. Captain Dave Fontenot, Lafayette LA, gives us insights on the area he fishes. Mike Segal, Galveston TX, and the offshore fishing on the North coast of Texas. Mary Ann Hiemann, Aransas Pass TX, talks about the red snapper summer. Captain Tom Farley, Port Aransas TX, shares his thoughts on fishing offshore. Calixto Gonzales, Texas Fish & Game Mag Great fishin tale of a "Run Away Elephant" caught by Calixto Gonzales in the Port Mansfield area. Catching Bill Fish in the Gulf of Mexico, Captain Scott McCune Out on a training charter Captain Scott McCune catches several bill fish in the Gulf. The picture below is a nice sail fish caught and released. Scott fishes offshore and in the bay areas and launches out of Rockport TX. Vary nice sail fish caught in the Gulf of Mexico by the Saltwater Cowboy, Captain Scott McCune. Texas Game Warden Watch with Chuck Ford Shrimping Season is getting underway. Shark regulations are updated and can be very confusing. Pick up a guide at the Texas Parks & Wildlife. Texas Parks & Wildlife are looking to hire about 25 more Game Wardens for the border area. "Little Fishin Tips" with Captain John Little This weeks tip is polarized sun glasses. When you fish be sure to get polarized sun glasses which will allow you to see the grass lines and sand pockets. They'll take the glare of the water surface and allow you to see into the water. Schools of redfish are very difficult to see with-out polarized sun glasses. With-out polarized sun glasses you have a great big headache at the end of the day.  Captain John Little New JGF Tales & Reports Studio We are excited for our second season of JGF Tales & Reports Podcast.
