Jesse & Stacy talk about the book Stacy is working on with Horse & Rider. They discuss  what is going on around the farm and what horses they have hanging out there these days. Stacy discusses a chapter in the upcoming book that outlines ‘fractured’ horses. These are horses that have been trained with more force and intimidation than understanding. Jesse calls this ‘McTraining’.  Jesse and Stacy discuss how this occurs and what can be done to avoid this. Stacy talks about her horse, Scrapper and how he is a good example of ‘Grandma’s Rules’. Stacy recaps last episode –we talked about where we came from and how we got started in the horse industry and this week lets go into more detail on our education…. Jesse-you have a favorite quote about getting an education, can you tell us? Getting an education is going to cost you money one way or another” Stacy asks Jesse about how it ‘cost’ him to get his education…. Jesse asks Stacy what did it cost you to get your education….Did you know Stacy worked at McDonalds? Stacy reflects on taxes and insurance this week…. You earned how much? Stacy reflects on the income in the first few years of training and reads the couples tax returns. Stacy asks Jesse what types of DEALS we made customers to keep them here? ‘Stupid Tax’ conversation, Dave Ramsey is great! Stacy observes, “We are all still learning and you are either making mistakes and paying out money that way or paying to get an education.” Making mistakes is going to happen! Jesse says, “The important thing is to try to learn from those mistake and do it better the next time.” You are going to pay for your education…one way or another. Stacy does an interview with Clark Bradley, an instructor at the University of Findlay, discussing the qualities he sees in students that are successful in the horse industry. Desire surfaces as a key quality. Jesse cites three keys: Desire, ability, and opportunity as he reflects on what Clark said. Also noted is the ability to be teachable, to accept coaching. Stacy reflects on how Jesse’s coaching has enabled her to achieve what she has including her famous bareback and bridleless ride. How can you identify if you have the big three: desire, ability, opportunity. Discussion of how to know if you have enough desire (refusal to give up) and how you handle failure…Stacy hopes to discuss failure in future episodes. Ability can be enhanced by WORK-time in the saddle. Desire can trump ability if ability lacks desire. Opportunity can be created by the seeds you plant. Discussion of loving horses or LOVING horses. Stacy plays another interview with Cindy Morehead, instructor at University of Findlay, and lists the keys she sees in kids who are successful long term. Cindy identifies how quickly the instructors can identify the kids who have ‘what it takes’…and experience is not the key. Stacy relates desire in the kids to the desire we look for in horse. Jesse discusses the misconception that Jesse and Stacy had early on with horses that had ability but not desire. DON’T SKIP THIS PART!
