Minicast Episode 5: ID’s and Documents for Bug out Bags | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:13:26

Today’s episode is about what documents and ID’s that you need to have copies of for your bug out bag. Now most people just think that they need their wallet and they will be fine, but you DON’T know what disaster you will run into, nor what it will do. If its a fire you could lose everything, This could be a Hurricane Sandy like event, where things DO go back to normal and you will need to file for insurance, etc. You should have Photo ID’s SS cards for you and your family Marriage certificates Copies of Insurance ID’s for little ones, even babies and more Notes: A listener commented regarding something I didnt even think about, heres what she said “…Just an addition to your list of doc’s.. If you or someone in your household is a naturalized citizen don’t forget to bring your Original “Certificate of Citizenship” as it is the only document the proves you are a US Citizen. It can be replaced by making request to the govt (N-565, Application for Replacement Naturalization/Citizenship Document) but if the govt is in a state of chaos who knows how long that would take. Even your US Passport doesn’t prove your citizenship in this case even though it does lend credence.

Minicast Episode 4: Frugal vs Cheap | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:21:23

Today we talk about the difference between being FRUGAL and being CHEAP, and what that means for preppers. Frugal means getting the best value for your dollar Cheap means going for the most product for our dollar Frugal means getting something that will last longer, work better and cost less over time Cheap means you get something that take fewer dollars but may break in a short time In Prepping we are buying things for an uncertain future, and for use in a time when we need those items to work, as our lives may depend on it.  You dont want the cheapest product, your want one with the best value for your dollar. NOTES: I talked about my Weapons podcast Episode 11: Firearms primer I talked about the Windn’go Lantern i purchased and reviewed Sorry about the beginning, i dont know what was rattling, but it goes away after the intro segment

 Minicast Episode 3: Apartment Prepping | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:24:17

Today we talk about things you can do to prep inside of an apartment if you have no other choice other than to bug in at that location. Security for the Front Door Prepping inside a small space, space efficiency Urban hunting Apartment gardens and water collectiion Insulating and heat efficiency   NOTES: I talked about hiding things in a hollow core interior door, one way is to cut a hole, drop what you need in, fill it up and then patch that hole.  You will want to make sure that these are items you dont need to get every month or this will quickly become a wasted effort.  You can probably figure out how to cut a hole, here is a youtube Vid on how to patch that hole.   Here are also a few cool ways to hide smaller objects in a door, without cutting it out. Flash Drive/Cash Door Hiding spot Cigar Tube Door Hiding Spot Also take a look at my post a few days ago on Hiding Places in your home and Property for a few more ideas.     Products for Door Bracing MASTERLOCK Door Brace   ONGUARD Metal plate door brace is a bit more pricey but is said to be able to withstadn 1775 lbs of force. Window Insulation 3m Is my favorite and what I use for the winter months, but there are others   DEFENSE/HUNTING Listen to my show on Firearms, and listen to the Shotgun section on home defense   As for the small game pellet/bbguns I would get a Cheap Crossman 760 Pellet/BB pump Air gun, you can use both pellets and bb’s in this weapon. I would also look at something like the Daisy Powerline Pistol, so that you can carry that with you if you are foraging for animals in the city but away from your area so a “rifle’ doesnt draw attention walking around.  I still have my old Diana Pneumatic Pellet Gun from when i was a kid, it was built in “West Germany” to tell you how old it is and its still shooting true. I know Diana makes rifles still and i have heard good things about the Diana 34 Meisterschutze its more spendy but its shoots at over 1000 fps (feet per second).   *Links in this post are amazon affiliate links which will give this site a small commission upon purchase, this goes to defray the costs of maintaining the site, podcast and forum*

Minicast Episode 6: Investing in Silver now | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:16:38

I know I know, I havent released episodes 3-5! Well i had recorded those and then started recording this one, and realized i should get it out there! So…First off Disclaimer! I am not a financial advisor, economist, soothsayer, or anything else then someone who likes to read, watch and listen to those who know more than himself and learn from them. So with that, do you your own research, come to your own conclusions and then make your decision. DO NOT DO IT BASED ON JUST MY OPINION? CLEAR? CLARO? Notes: I mentioned Greg Mannarino, here is his info Greg Mannarino Youtube Channel Also Greg’s Book “The Politics of Money”  I am currently writing the review for this book, but Trust me IT IS a GOOD READ   I also mentioned Peter Schiff I buy my Gold, Silver, etc from BULLION DIRECT.  i have no affiliation with them, other than that its where i buy my silver and gold.   There is also the Silver Shield Round which i have had up on the site, it really is a great deal! and Members get an even better deal, so sign up and check it out

Minicast Episode 2: Harnessing your Fear | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:15:48

Todays show is on how fear can either be harnessed to focus our prepping or how it can hinder us. Fear is something we have all probably experienced in our road to prepping, it is probably the thing that really got us to wake up, and go “Hey something isnt right”  This fear is a good thing, it focused us on the task at hand, to find out more information on where our economy is headed or disasters might befall us.  This doesnt make you crazy or “out there” it makes you aware. However this fear can hinder us in many ways Become so wrapped up in it, we become addicted to finding the latest daily news on the event, hour by hour Become that annoying prepper that badgers his/her friends and families with facebook posts/emails and conversations about “how the world’s going to end” Go out and just buy our preps at times and prices we shouldnt (personal experience, see silver prices late 2011!) Become so enamored with one event or thing that we overlook another Let it interfere with our family/friend relationships, where we end up alienating the people we want to help I dont say this because I am picking on one person or another, but because i have done this to some extent or another, But I had an epiphany about my prepping. Yes Fear can be good, it keeps you sharp and helps you to stay focused This fear shouldnt rule your life, no point in losing your family when you are trying to save it Prep Intelligently, in a rational and calculated manner Recognize the fear (event), mitigate the risk (prep) and accept that some things are out of your control and ENJOY LIFE! What do you think? Anything I should add to this list, or do you disagree?

Minicast Episode 1: Variety in Food Storage | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:12:51

So I’m trying to get more podcast’s done for you, and run into 1 of 2 problems 1) Not enough info put together to make a whole show (not often the case) 2) Note enough time to put together the episode to get them out regularly   So I decided to start doing these “minicasts” which will run from 10-20 minutes to make sure I’m getting the info out to you that i want to!   This episode is focusing on Variety in your Preps, To not stick with just have 20 buckets of wheat, beans and oats, etc.  You will WANT AND NEED to have “extras” to throw in there to make the meals more edible, fun and enjoyable.   NOTES: The Books i mentioned were… COOKING WITH RICE AND BEANS AND COOKING WITH HOME STORAGE Both are by Peggy Layton and AWESOME books to have now and start learning how to cook your food storage! Dont wait until the time its “needed” by then the spices you want will be astronomically priced! (im guessing)   Let me know what you think of the minicast format!   *The above links are Affiliate links to Amazon, if you buy the books there, this site gets a small percentage of the sale*

 Episode 11: Firearms Primer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:36:45

Today we finish the “Gun podcast” that I started on in Episode 10, We Talk about everything from revolvers to Assault  Rifles.  This isnt a comprehensive talk on EVERY weapon out there, This is focusing on my areas of expertise and the common rifles, pistols, etc. out there that you should look at for your home and preps. This episode I talk about: Pistol, Revolvers and Semi-Autos, what are the big differences? Shotguns, Why they are the BEST home defense weapon available Assault Rifles, why I pick the AR and other options for you out there. Why “Tac’ing” out your weapon can be useful or just a waste of your money (see above photo!) What not to waste your money on ‘cool’ toys, focus on whats really needed NOTES: I mentioned shooting a Moose with a 5.56….I have never done it personally, but there are stories of folks who have, successfully, but often had to shoot multiple times and spend hours tracking it down after lung shots.  Yes its possible, Yes in a survival situation you COULD do this, but its NOT ideal, not a 2nd or 3rd Choice in my book.  I meant to convey it in these terms, but after listening to the podcast, it didnt come out as i wanted and I dont want my fellow hunters getting on my butt about it! Great Book on Tactical Shooting called GREEN EYES BLACK RIFLES by Kyle Lamb, This is a TACTICAL shooting guide, but very helpful in honing your skills I cut out about 45 minutes of the podcast because it was already TOOO LONG, so the sections i cut out were on AR- Modifications, and Precision Rifles (i.e. what people call ‘sniper’ rifles) so it wasnt THAT pertinent to the podcast, but i figured over 90 minutes was long enough!

Episode 10: Weapons Training: Physical and Mental | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:49:21

Today we talk about the not so ‘sexy’ but extremely necessary and important topic.  That of Gun SAFETY and TRAINING. I know its not fun talking about safety, and you dont want to listen to a podcast with someone telling you not to shoot yourself…. However alot of this stuff needs to be said to both prospective/new gun owners and current ones as well. Plus thats only a part of the podcast! I DISCUSS…  A few safety MANTRAS that i have learned over the years (Well just one!) I talk about a embarassing accident I had that could’ve have taken my life. The importance of Training and why it is more important that spending that money on stocking up on ammo What kind of training you can be conducting in your home without spending money Other Alternative Training techniques The mental “Training” you will need before you employ ANY weapon     NOTES: The Book I discussed in the podcast is called “ON KILLING” by Col. David Grossman an excellent Book! His other book is called “ON COMBAT: THE PSYCHOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF DEADLY CONFLICT IN WAR AND PEACE” Another excellent book that you should read on the physical and mental effects of combat and ‘Deadly” Scenarios. *These are both affiliate links to Amazon, if you buy these books through this link, this site gets a small commision*   REMEMBER WE HAVE 2 CONTESTS RUNNING AT THIS MOMENT 1) Monthly writing/Youtube Contest 2) Facebook Like/Post Contest!   Rate and Comment on the Itunes Page for the Podcast!

 Episode 9: Depression Proof Jobs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:41:23

In a Depression Or collapse, people still need things done for them, fixed for them or provided to them. This is not a comprehensive list, but more of a few things for you to look at and get your mind moving in the right direction. Most of all just think....no matter how bad it might get, what will people still want and need? People will always eventually need new or repaired clothing, or a new water source in the form of a well. Here are a few of the discussed jobs Well Digging Sewing/seamstress Leather Work Machinist Listen to the podcast to hear the rest. I also included in this list a few things that i have done, and in some cases still do, to make extra cash to help out with my preps. Leave a Comment and Rating Please! Thanks for Listening!

Episode 8: The Economy in the Danger Zone | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:17:52

Today once again I talk about the economy not to inundate you with economic stuff but to help you understand better how close we are to the precipice and why you need to up your prepping now, rather than later. We will talk about the governments wants to nationalize the retirement accounts and how they are possibly doing that already as well as why the worlds central banks, governments and billionaires are all betting big on inflation, currency devaluation and gold. We have the power to help ease the pain we will feel when this house of cards come tumbling down, and we also have the power to assist each other and the unprepared. We need to be involved in our communities and spread the word of liberty and freedom so that when these same people come back with their snake oil carts we can make sure those around us and around the nation say NO WAY, PACK IT UP AND MOVE IT ON DOWN THE ROAD Show Notes: I was wrong in the info i stated about the FED to GDP ratio.  historically its been 6% and it is now 19%, the link is to the original article. U.S. Economy added 96,000 jobs in August. We need 250,000 just to keep up with population growth. Unemployment rate dropped from 8.3% to 8.1% which sounds great except the only reason it did was that around 300,000 people just stopped looking for work! Article on the Fed talking about the “risks” posed by Money Market Accounts which were created in the Mid 70′s My Section on Precious Metals Investing and Why Silver is the best bet Post on Russian Gold, and my thoughts on the economy Article on Inflation over the past 800 years, very descriptive and shows you the big hockey stick up since the Fed was created. Briefly mentioned the site www.purreview.com about the info on water contaminants in Tap Water

 Episode 7: Pre/Post Natal Care in Collapse | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:50:47

Today we talk about Pre-Natal, Birth and Post Natal Care in a collapse. Stocking up on basic medical supplies is a must, and a given for any prepper but pregnancy and birth related items may not be high on your list…they should be. You may not be planning on having kids yet, but often baby’s come despite those plans and when you least expect it! So regardless if your planning on being celibate for life, stock up and you may help a mother and/or child survive in the post collapse world Show Notes: I talked about a book called Healing Hands…well its actually called HEART AND HANDS! I reference a previous post on Sterilization of Medical equipment I also mentioned the Prepper Contest I am running!  So please send in your submissions

 Episode 6: Breakdown and Security | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:51

Today We talk about Economic Collapse/Breakdown and Security Concerns There are three different scenarios of breakdown that we talk about on this episode Regional Collapse Depression/ 1930′s like Economic Collapse with partial or Total Collapse of the Government This show was in response to a listeners request that i clarify my position on security during a breakdown.  Previously i had not been very clear and sounded as though i was saying during a breakdown that security and criminality wouldnt be that big of a deal, or not that bad.  What i meant to say was that it wasnt going to be like the Prepper Fiction books, the Mad max in the Thunderdome scenarios that make good reads, but dont translate well into reality. Now of course…this COULD happen….but in reality it wont, there will be “gangs” of people, and even large groups of criminals, but this will be area relational.  Listen to the podcast to hear more. That being said PLEASE CONTINUE TO WRITE IN! I appreciate it and want to put out the content that you want to hear about! Thanks again everyone!  Episode 5: Bug out Bags | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:45:28

Today we talk about Bug out Bags/72 hour kits on The Great Northern Prepper Podcast. Bug Out Bags are basically as small bag/backpack that you can carry that will provide all the basic needs for survival for a given period (generally 72-96 hours). You should have a Bug out Bag for your home and for you vehicle, this is so that you can grab a bag and run if something is wrong in or near your home. If you are away from your home, most likely you are in or near your vehicle, so if disaster strikes you will be able to have what you need to make it back there or situate yourself with a comfortable grace period of basic survival items.

Episode 4: Obamacare, Debt and where the Country is heading | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:58:57

With the Supreme Court decision upholding the individual mandate as a tax, there are many questions that are raised for the future of our liberty and freedom in our country. DEBT, FREEDOM, INDEPENDENCE

 Episode 3: A Introduction to Permaculture | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:51:41

Permaculture is a way of Gardening that connects you and your garden back into Nature. You take Natures natural way of interactions with plants, soil, wind, water and sun and instead of fighting it, accepting it and using it to your advantage. The thing i love most about permaculture is the use of natural remedies and inputs, without using chemicals to kill plants and pests.  We cannot understand how detrimental the use of chemical herbicides and pesticides has been to nature and ourselves.  Permaculture not only will help naturally increase the production of your gardens and food cultivation, but also heal the land that has for so long been neglected or poisoned by our modern day world. It sounds very “hippy” but in truth its not, anyone from any background, especially in the prepping world can understand and acknowledge the need for safe, natural and productive food systems.  We get back what we put in, this adage is ancient and true today, and when we put in chemicals and toxins into the ground and our bodies, what do you think we are going to get back out?  Here I will introduce you to the concepts of Permaculture and what it means, how it works and just a basic overview.   For more information check out the PERMACULTURE page on the site and visit these links   PERMIES.COM is the BLOG OF BLOGS ON EVERYTHING PERMACULTURE   And watch these videos from a Forum Member, and goes by EARTHWAY EXPERIENCE on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5Hc6fBzDhY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4UokvgCU-k
