 ASC #39: Nesting Effects | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 8:35

The way Media Composer processes effects has some weird side-effects: Sometimes an effect applied to an upper video track also affects the video tracks below -- whether you intended that or not. So this week we'll take control over that issue by learning how to use nesting to your advantage.  ASC #38: BCC Pan & Zoom | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 12:22

After last week's look into Avid's Pan & Zoom effect, this week we check out the Pan & Zoom effect that is included in Boris Continuum Complete 5 and later. It's a great effect that is incredibly easy to use, and we'll create a simple zoom in auto-mode (it will literally take you 30 seconds to do) and get into the nitty-gritty for more complex animations.  ASC #37: Avid Pan & Zoom | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 15:14

I've had several requests for tutorials on Pan and Zoom, so this week and next, this will be out topic. This week, we'll look into Avid's own Pan & Zoom effect. It is used to, well, pan and zoom into images that are larger than your sequence dimensions without quality loss (as would occur if you imported the image into a bin and then used, say, a 3D Warp for panning and zooming). We'll create simple and a bit more complex animations, learn about the different temporal and spatial interpolation parameters, and of course I'll hint at some best practices and some quirks of the effect. Next week, we'll check out the Pan & Zoom effect that is included in Boris Continuum Complete 5 or later.  ASC #36: AMA with Red and Quicktime Files | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 13:45

With Media Composer 5, you can access Quicktime and R3D files natively using AMA (provided you have the horsepower). In this episode, I'll show you how to link to AMA volumes, change the R3D source settings (such as ISO, color temperature etc.) within Media Composer, adjust the formatting and then transcode to DNxHD. Editorial note: I apologize for the bad audio quality in this and last week's podcast. Snow Leopard seems to reset my audio input gain now and again, but this way you finally know what quantization noise sounds like! Seriously, it'll get better next week.  ASC #35: Media Composer 5 Introduction | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 13:43

I'm finally on Media Composer 5, so in this week's episode, I'll introduce you to the most obvious new features such as the Smart Tools, Realtime Audio Effects, the new Interface and some new Keyboard Shortcuts. There are a lot of different tutorials covering similar subjects, so check out the show notes for more. SHOW NOTES Steve Cohen's Introduction to the MC5 Timeline.  ASC #34: Film Flash | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 6:58

I was asked if it was possible to get the Glow Effect without Boris Continuum Complete. Had I been a smart-ass, I would have replied: "Sure, buy Sapphire!" But I'm trying not to be, so I came up with something that looks kinda similar, and I called it Film Flash, because "Glow Part 2" seemed lame. In this tutorial, I'll use a Blur and the Color Effect to create that Film Flash.  ASC #32: Blurring into / out of a Title | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 10:59

In this episode, we'll transition into a title by starting with a blur and then slowly letting it focus. To do this we'll have to look into how titles actually work, redoing it as a simple Matte Key and then manipulating Key and Fill to achieve out goal. You see, it's fun for the whole family! And if you were hoping for Media Composer 5 content: As soon as I get my hands on the new version, there'll be some. Might take a bit, though, sorry.  ASC #31: Curtain Transition | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 13:32

This week's episode features a request from Youtube user Instantslugger, who wanted to know how to do a curtain transition within Media Composer. Turns out it's not that hard. We'll do it using Avid's Paint effect and a Matte Key, plus I'll show you how to make the transition reusable and real-time.  ASC #30: Audio Timewarp | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 11:28

Everybody knows the Timewarp only applies to video. But what if you want to change the speed of your audio as well? In this episode, we'll do just that with the help of a couple of different AudioSuite plugins that come with Media Composer.  No ASC this week: Console Commands | File Type: application/pdf | Duration: 0:01

No show this week, so I thought I'd give you some food for thought. Paul Sampson created a great document listing a bunch of useful Avid Console commands. (You find the console under Tools. But if you didn't know about it before reading this, maybe you don't want to mess with it.) So I added the document to the feed and hope Paul doesn't go DMCA on me.  ASC #28: Color Correction Basics VII - Vignettes and Wrap-Up | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 11:52

In the final installment of the Color Correction series, we'll highlight parts of a shot by using a vignette. Then, I'll go through some Color Correction options that I hadnn't mentioned in previous episodes. SHOW NOTES If you really want to learn about color correction, I strongly recommend Steve Hullfish's "The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0240809904?ie=UTF8&tag=avidscree-20 (Disclaimer: If you buy the book from the link above, I'll get a small kickback from Amazon.)  ASC #27: Color Correction Basics VI - Matching Two Shots Part II | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 7:15

In this episode, we'll continue matching one shot to another. We'll do it manually, and we'll use Avid's curves. SHOW NOTES If you really want to learn about color correction, I strongly recommend Steve Hullfish's "The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0240809904?ie=UTF8&tag=avidscree-20 (Disclaimer: If you buy the book from the link above, I'll get a small kickback from Amazon.)  ASC #26: Color Correction Basics V - Matching Two Shots Part I | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 9:28

One of the most common tasks when doing color correction is matching two shots. So this week and next, we'll do exactly that. As always, I like working with the curves in Avid, but you should be able to use the skills learned in this tutorial when using the Color Wheels as well. Sorry for splitting this tutorial into two episodes, but I try to keep the length of the podcast around ten minutes -- this one would have been too long. SHOW NOTES If you really want to learn about color correction, I strongly recommend Steve Hullfish's "The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0240809904?ie=UTF8&tag=avidscree-20 (Disclaimer: If you buy the book from the link above, I'll get a small kickback from Amazon.)
