The Paralympic Winter Games are upon us and it's time to learn more about adaptive skiing and riding. Whistler Blackcomb’s Adaptive Ski and Snowboard program caters to people with disabilities. In this episode, Toaster meets up with Canadian ski legend Steve Podborski for a tour of the Dave Murray Downhill on Whistler Mountain. Podborski is the Chef de Mission for Canadian athletes at the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. He is also a former Crazy Canuck ski racer. The course, named after fellow Crazy Canuck, Dave Murray, is one of the most challenging race courses on the ski racing circuit. Athletes will fly down the Dave Murray at speeds of more than 140km per hour!
From snow-cross to halfpipe, meet three Sea to Sky athletes who are competing in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Julia Murray, daughter of famous Crazy Canuck downhill skier Dave Murray, is set to hit the slopes in ski cross. Local Maëlle Ricker is competing in snowboard cross. Halfpipe athlete Justin Lamoureux reflects on his experiences at the last Winter Olympic Games in Torino and what it means for him to compete on home soil.
Back in the day, when snowboarding was considered more of a crime than a sport, Whistler was THE place to shred the gnar on one plank. With the help of local snowboarding historians, Toaster takes us back to the old school, when people would drive across the continent for one hit on the famous Blackcomb “wind lip.” Whistler Blackcomb helped pave the way for snowboarding on the West Coast and continues to be one of the ultimate snowboarding destinations.
Whistler Blackcomb was born for the games. Originally built with the 1968 Olympic bid in mind, Whistler was made the Games. Now, we’re less than two months away from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and excitement is mounting. Meet long-time locals Brian Leighton and Jessica 'Pika' Turner and find out what this town is all about.
Toaster, a snowboarder, hasn’t skied for many years, but in this episode, he decides to get back on 2 planks.
