Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-1646- Let’s Talk About Liberty and was first published on September 17th, 2015. The following are the original show notes from that episode… I am getting an extremely late start today due to the new ducks arriving and a family emergency, so it is going to be a simple chat with Jack episode today. Last night I listened to the republican debates, not really sure why, guess I felt I deserved some sort of punishment. What I heard was mostly a bunch of people not actually answer any of the questions, say how great they were, explain why the other people sucked, and so on. When issues were discussed I sat with dismay at how clearly none of these people seem to comprehend liberty, which of course is supposed to be the foundation of our nation. Frankly these people seem to have a disdain for actual liberty. What got me even more was this morning while driving to get the ducks and later supplies for them hearing people like Glenn Beck talk about “how good they sounded”, not all of them mind you but many of them. Glenn the self proclaimed independent libertarian commending what many of these people said. This got me thinking, does my nation even comprehend liberty at this point? Sadly I don’t think by and large we do. So let’s talk about that today. The typical story about disease and vegetables is something like this from the all natural crowd…. Just use compost and good organic fertility, build good soil and it won’t be a problem. Yea, um, about that, look good soil, good fertility and abundant soil life and minerals go a long way to healthy plants, but they don’t eliminate all diseases.  Some of my beans are developing a fungus referred to as rust this year.  Why?  It is so much wetter then normal.  The same beds are growing jalapenos the size of cigars, there is nothign wrong with the soil. In Texas and much of the south the battle with tomato blight is a constant battle.  You can start with soil that is perfect from a bag and by mid season it shows up.  Good watering practices, mulching and proper pruning help, but many in the all organic and permaculture world seem reluctant to use one of the best weapons at our disposal.  These are disease resistant hybrids. Hybrids have been given a bad rap lately and tossed in with the world of GMOs.  I have covered this before but they are not the same thing.  A hybrid green bean like Jade II is as much a GMO as a dog that is a shepherd crossed with a collie is, in other words not at all. Today we will review some of the more common diseases and fungi that limit yields and even sometimes totally destroy vegetable plants along with some varieties of seed that have disease resistance built into them.  More importantly we discuss how to identify a disease vs. pest damage vs. nutrient deficiency and what to do about them and specifically how to find disease resistant varieties based on your individual needs. Dillon grew up in Mississippi before going to DC to serve in the Navy. In DC he designed and built nuclear reactors, which he has talked about on the show before, back on episode 2253. Have you ever heard the phrase, “the lowest common denominator”.  While this is an actual mathematical principle it has also become a colloquialism meaning to cater to the lowest preforming member of a given group.  Today that group is the people of the United States and the performance metrics are basic intelligence, critical thinking and the ability to use logic and reason. In essence a better title for this show may be “lowering the common denominator” with the sub title of “the dumbing down of America”, but I simply feel dropping the denominator sounds better and requires more thought, and as you shall see, thinking is the main focus of today’s episode. Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-2000- How Liberty Creates Inequality and Why that’s Good and was originally published on May 9th, 2017. The following are the original show notes from that episode… There is a fallacy out there masquerading as a universal truth, and that is that our goal in society should be equality for all. That inequality should be eliminated, period. Politically many people have many different views on how that should be done, however the average person would agree that inequality is a bad thing, and should be eliminated. The truth though is while the definition of inequality has been changed by the politically correct you can’t ignore the root of the word. It is formed from two parts, In this case the prefix “in” indicates a negative, as in the word “not”. The component equality comes from the word equal as in each part, person, etc, get the same thing. In other words inequality means “not equal”. So some get more than others, some get less. What we have done is made inequality the same as or equal to injustice, which means a lack of fairness or justice or simply “not just”. These two things are not the same thing. If you think I am splitting hairs tune in today because this is a critical thing to understand when discussing liberty with others. Grass is turning brown and the other thing that really thrives are snake, lizards, grasshoppers and things that eat grasshoppers. Shade is the number one commodity if you are out side. Even as a boy in Pennsylvania my Grandfather referred to this time of year as “the dog days”. What he meant was leave any outside dog alone, they might bite as they are so miserable in the heat. So it may seem like an odd time to discuss fall gardening. Well let me put you in touch with reality. Even for me where it is so how that two Hobbits threw a ring into my back yard to destroy it yesterday the first frost date right now is only, 107 days away. If you live say in central Pennsylvania you are looking at 76 days or less. You want me to really freak you out? As of today we are only 121 days from Thanksgiving and 152 days until Christmas. In short despite the heat and long summer days, Fall is coming and coming fast, in fact we are right now only 58 days from September 22, the Fall Equinox and official beginning to fall. The following are the original show notes from that episode… In the 70’s there was a very large back to the land movement that just didn’t last. Many are calling the current boom in gardening and small livestock keeping something similar, but that is quite short sighted. To begin with the current boom in such things really began about 2006 and was in full swing by 2008, it is now 2013 and things are moving faster then ever. That is a total of 7 years so far, the 70’s back to the land movement only lasted about half a decade before fading into oblivion. So what is different this time and why is this new multi generational group of homesteaders different and what does the future hold for us. That is today’s subject. Today we get back into The Insurgency Series with more on mental sovereignty. I define mental sovereignty as follows Mental Sovereignty – the ability to fully and wholly think for oneself by using logic, reason and all available fact to form truly independent opinions and then take useful personal action based on them. Such actions may be proactive, such as “doing something about it”. They may also be non reactive, such as “this does not qualify for my attention”. But they are never over reactive in such as “I am so angry, I am going to fume about this and get nothing done while I waste this energy”. Sadly most Americans would claim that they do think for themselves, but they do not. In truth many who are truly proud to be doing so are so caught up in the daily servings of bullshit soup, that they literally can’t think for themselves. Note my use of can’t isn’t won’t or do not have the inherent ability. For instance you can swim, but if I strap a 2 ton piece of iron to your leg and throw you in 50 feet of water, what then? The answer is cut the rope, and today that is what we will try to do. If yes proceed with caution anyway. Step Four – Take the issue into an alternative context using substitution. Step Five – Use logic to analyze this issue based on all your past knowledge and experience, go to yourself first. Step Six – Gather information about the issue from all sides of the debate. Step Seven – Repeat step 1-6 if needed, if not skip this step. Continue this process until you decide you are ready for step eight. Step Eight – Explain your opinion to yourself, see if you really believe it. Use one of your alternate contexts when you do this. Step Nine – Form your opinion and determine what action you should take, remember the IDGAF option! Step Ten – Remember you still might be wrong. I do want to make clear, I am not talking about LGDs, today, that would be livestock guardian dogs. While my dogs provide some protection to my animals they are not LGDs by a long shot. That is a highly specialized dog niche, requiring a very unique approach. I will instead today be talking about how to turn your dog into a good member of your family. One that doesn’t eat your birds, go into the trash, pee in the house, hurt visitors or let in strangers unchallenged. I mean no other family member would be expected to behave this way.
