Episode-2545- An Introduction to Kratky Hydroponics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:42

A few weeks ago a caller asked me about something called Kratky Hydroponics.  Now when you guys ask about something I have not yet heard about I look into it.  I will admit though I was highly skeptical.  It feels like today every other person wants to invent something, some new whatsitcalled method.  Now look I am all for innovation but so many new “systems” often seem like solutions in search of a problem.  I figured that is what Kratky was, bluntly I was wrong! Unlike most subjects that I do a stand alone show on I have not yet done Kratky Hydroponics.  I tend to shy away from discussing what I have not actually done.  However given I have been working with aquaponics for over 4 years I am comfortable with a getting started show on Kratky.  Given I am about to get started with it myself, I am simply function stacking my research here and getting a two fer out of the deal.  Honestly one big advantage of hydro is that it is easier than aquaponics.  Episode-2544- The Veterans Day Show for 11-12-19 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:53:39

Veteran’s Day landed after the workshop which made for an easy day of recovery for me today. So it is time yet again for our special Veteran’s Day edition of The Survival Podcast. I have also removed any time based references so that this version can be timeless. There is no commercial content today as the entire show is dedicated to those that serve our nation. You will notice more music in today’s show, hopefully no lawyers for Trace Atkins, Tim McGraw or Toby Keith will come after me for today’s show though I doubt it will be an issue. Additionally you will hear the song I co wrote with Gregg Yows, “What Have You Done“. So tune in today for the story of Veteran’s Day, stories about our troops and the real reasons you should never miss a chance to say thank you to a veteran.

Episode-121-TSP Rewind – Fishing For Food, Underrated Fish and How to Cook Them | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:41:14

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-1937- Fishing For Food, Underrated Fish and How to Cook Them and was originally published on Jan. 24th 2017. The following are the original show notes from that episode… A friend and I have been talking about fishing a lot lately, it is still cold, the winds are stupid this time of year, but man I have the bug. It is likely that I will be investing in a boat in March, and will be hitting some of the bigger lakes in the are. I really do love simply bank fishing and shore fishing though. Something about the simplicity, park the car or truck, a short walk with your gear and a cooler with a few beers and hopefully some stuff worth frying up by day’s end. With surf fishing it is a long drive but the experience is even better, standing up to your waste while schools of fish and the occasional shark swim by, (no I am not kidding) with the anticipation of never knowing what you might catch next. Fishing has become a massive industry even at the “recreational level”, I know people with 55,000 dollar “bass boats” Some See “Trash Fish” but I See Dinner filled up with 15,000 dollars worth of gear. (once again not kidding) These people fish constantly and never keep a fish, yet refer to fish like Sand Bass and Bullheads as “trash fish”. I don’t know, perhaps it was growing up without a lot but a love for the outdoors that keeps me grounded. I have been off shore for Marlin, in the Florida bays catching Snook longer than my leg, on Gatun Lake in Panama after massive Peacock bass and deep into the mountains for brook trout that had never likely seen a hook in their lives. There is more, I have quite literally at times been an “adventurer fisherman”. Yet I still enjoy bouncing slabs for sand bass or just sitting at a small stock pond catching small bullhead catfish or fishing a back water creek for various perch/brim/sunfish. I also enjoy standing in the surf and catching whiting, hard heads and gaftops. And in many ways it is these fish I most enjoy eating. They are small, tasty, fast to clean, they have a great size to yield ratio and you literally can’t harm their populations with hook and line. Today we talk about this type of fishing and the food value it brings to your home. Join Me Today To Discuss… Basic bank and surf gear for these types of fish Finding places to fish, check right under your nose How do you actually “target a species” Habits Patterns Seasons Diet Some of my favorite species to target Fresh Water Bullhead Cats Channel Cats Fresh Water Drum White Bass Bluegill/Sunfish/Perch/Brim/etc Bowfin – I don’t eat these but fun to catch Salt Water Gaftop and Hardhead Catfish Whiting Sand Trout Jack Crevalle Small Sharks (Blacktips) Croaker Bluefish Some ways to prepare some of these fish Pan Fried “shucked catfish” Grilled Channel Cat Steaks White Bass on the Half Shell Yellow Bass Chowder – you can use any fish Whiting Cerviche – you can do this with any salt water fish Grilled Shark or Jack Fish Nothing will kill you (cooked) so try everything   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum TspAz.com You’re Gonna Miss This – Trace Atkins   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-120-TSP Rewind – The Evolving Meaning of a Self Sufficient Lifestyle | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:51

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-1059- The Evolving Meaning of a Self Sufficient Lifestyle and was originally published on Jan. 22nd 2013. The following are the original show notes from that episode… Many people romanticize history. Oh if only we could have lived in the old days right? Taking a wagon out to homestead virgin land. Let me tell you as a student of history it was an amazing time to be alive, it was also a hell of a lot harder then many in the preparedness movement make it out to have been. The reality is modern technology isn’t going away. That is a great thing, it will change, adapt and face certain challenges due to energy availability but we are not going back to Little House on the Prairie. Frankly I am okay with that. Modern oppressive government isn’t going away either. This of course I find unfortunate but it is also reality. The more I learn the more I realize the majority of Americans are actually for bigger and more intrusive government. They are simply divided as to how it should be marketed. I know if you are a fan of liberty this makes little sense but the reality is people have had generations of conditioning and it is the rare person that easily breaks the cycle. Hence to be self sufficient today we need to look at reality not at the romanticism of a history that isn’t going to return. We also must not fantasize about the utopia promised by a small government society where we can all be left alone. The only way to obtain this today is to create your own little pocket of as much of it as you can muster. Join Me Today As We Discuss… Why we must not turn our backs on technology Why debt freedom must be part of your plan Why where you choose to live is so important Why community must be part of your plan Why we all need to become homesteaders (no matter where we live) Why we need hard skills to go along with soft and technical skills How food storage fits with this plan, disaster or not Why it is time to go on the offensive in some areas and not others   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum TspAz.com Half the Dad – Brad Paisley   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. Today’s episode was originally Episode-360- The 22 Rifle vs. The Shotgun for Survival Needs and was first published on January 10th, 2010. The following are the original show notes from that episode… Today we examine one of the main questions discussed in forums and news groups, which is a better survival tool, the 22 or the shotgun. Both have advantages and disadvantages join me today as we discuss some of them. Join me today as we discuss… Why I hate the term “survival situation” What are you most likely to need a firearm for, food or defense How much weight and bulk are represented by 75 shot gun shells Which has greater “flexibility” the 22 or the shotgun, is that question relative to the situation Why the right tool for the right job is not always possible Which 22 rifle would I choose for a wilderness or defensive situation Why I still say to choose a bolt action for training Which shotguns top my list as the best utility tool for the job The real advantage of the semi auto shotgun and why it may never matter   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum TspAz.com Cats in the Cradle – Harry Chapin   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2541- Off Grid Tiny Home Life in the Wilderness | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:50

Ariel lives off grid in a tiny house nestled into the western mountains of Wyoming, a little over 6000 feet above sea level. She splits her own wood for heat, carries water by hand, uses a composting toilet, and attempts to grow, hunt, or forage as much of her own food as possible between the weather and wildlife she’s surrounded by. As a child, she was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of her free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that she older. She moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoys spending her time outside with her dog, hiking, gardening, and photographing the natural world. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family Ariel had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. She’s enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging, to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, she enjoys doing the kinds of things that try to provide a real service or value to others. Some of her other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, skiing, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to close friends.  Episode-2540- 10 Life Skills We Should Teach Every Child | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:33

Well the truth is these are 10 life skills we should be teaching every child and many adults who never learned. them.  I have done shows like this before but I want to come at it from a slightly different angle today.  More along the lines of the process behind the skills.  In other words you can teach someone to cook but showing them how a stove and a knife works and giving them recipes.  That is basic technique teaching.  Of you can teach the process and theory behind cooking and a person can then create meals on the fly with whatever you give them. Think about how a lot of TV cooking competition shows go today.  Okay guys here are jelly beans and fish, make something.  Not kidding that is a recent show I saw.  Of like Guy’s Grocery Game, here you get 12 bucks to make dinner, sounds easy but you only get to take items from three random isles in the grocery store. How can you do this if you always use a recipe when you cook?  If you learn to build things but only by following a blue print and materials list, how can you make up a blue print and materials list for an idea that is for now only in your head?  How can you start from scratch without understanding the underlying process and theory behind a skill?  The answer is you can’t, today we look at changing that.  We consider some of the possible financial upside as well. Join Me Today to Discuss… Understanding what to do is not the same as understanding why it is done a certain way The Ten Life Skills Meat Cutting Carpentry Animal Husbandry Cooking Accounting and Bookkeeping Mental Simulation of an Event (job interview, asking for a date, etc.) Logical Analysis of a Claim Presentation and Teaching Skills Troubleshooting Maps and Navigation Skills Final Thoughts – Do you really have all these skills yourself, do you want them.  Episode-2539- 12 Basic Prepping Questions Answered | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:17:54

Figured I would though some change ups at you guys this week so skipping the typical Monday feedback show for a back to basics episode.  I think sometimes we get too deep in the weeds with advanced topics and forget to return to the fundamentals from time to time, with the most basic needs.  So today I am going to basically interview myself by answering 12 questions that will get most people in the right mindset about prepping. This should be a good show for everyone.  It should help new people get off to a great start, help the seasoned peppper realize where a few things may have slipped and even be a great show to share with people who say, “why do I need to prep anyway, nothing ever happens here anyway”, I mean that is the first question we answer today. Join Me Today as I Discuss… Why should I bother to prep, it is safe where I live and nothing ever happens Why should we start telling the ant and grasshopper story to our kids again From the fires in California, to recent flooding to third world disasters what do they all have in common What is impact scale and threat probability and how does it impact your preparedness plan What are your six primary survival needs and how do you go about seeing to them Food – store it Water -store it Energy – back it up Security – gear, procedure and protocols Shelter – maintain it and have a plan to bug out Health and Sanitation – keep supplies, have a plan to eliminate waste, get basic training How important is it to own guns, store ammo, etc. What is the best way to be prepared for power outages How much food does a family really need to store What is the most important yet least expensive item most families don’t have but should What role does gardening/homesteading/etc play in preparedness Why is debt elimination critical to a prepared lifestyle What is career resiliency and why should it never be overlooked   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com Nothing Grows in the Shadows – Jake Owen   Sponsors of the Day Bulk Ammo JM Bullion   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2538- Expert Council Q&A for 10-24-19 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:44

Today its Friday so it’s time for the expert council show. To ask a question for a show like this, just send an email to me at jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com with “TSPC Expert” in the subject line. Today on The Survival Podcast, the expert council answers questions on pasture management, diesel motors, timber, alternative heat, wound care, simple living, processing game birds, making cheese and more. In the body of your email first tell me the council member your question is for. Second ask your question concisely in one to two sentences maximum. Third any and all details after that. This is the formula to give you the best chance of getting on the air. I do what I can to get as many of your questions as possible on the air but can’t always get to all of them. Our council is made of a wide variety of experts in everything from the tactical to the practical and everything in between. To get more information on our Expert Council visit our “Meet the Expert Council Page” to learn more about them and their specific areas of expertise.
