Episode-1205- John Fedock on Wood Gasification | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:41

TweetJohn Fedock of PowerItYourself.com John Fedock is a mechanical engineer with a passion for renewable energy systems, sustainable living, and Permaculture.   John’s childhood was dream to become an “Inventor”; now as professional engineer, he has decided to focus his efforts on designing practical renewable energy systems that can be constructed by any handyman. To accomplish his goals, John is utilizing his mechanical design and manufacturing experience to help wood gasification technology become a practical solution for both rural and urban lifestyles.  His goal is to help others sift through the”Energy Scams” to find practical technologies that will actually fulfill their current needs. John joins us to discuss building your own wood gasifier and other practical renewable energy systems today.  We start by asking the question are there any renewable energy technologies are mature enough to replace fossil fuels? We then examine the renewable energy technologies that have the greatest potential to sustain humanity in the future.  From there we discuss John’s gasifier that is currently under construction and why he is taking his own unique approach.  We then discuss some of his other D.I.Y. energy projects and examine the technology behind solar air conditioning, yes it does exist.  Episode-1204- An Earthworks Course with Nick and Nick | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:43

TweetThe Nick and Nick in the title would be Nick Ferguson and Nick Burtner.  The two are joining forces to put together an incredible earth works course.  Today they both join us to discuss the coming course and earthworks and permaculture in general. Nick Burtner of Working With Nature Nicholas Burtner is a permaculture practitioner, advocate, consultant, and teacher. After a greater calling in 2011, permaculture found Nick and infused him with an endless passion that has led him to travel many places learning, spreading, and practicing permaculture and natural living and healing ever since. Nick has attended internships at the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia under the leadership of Geoff and Nadia Lawton as well as obtaining a permaculture design certification from Geoff Lawton and Bill Mollison. He has also attended the Earthship Academy for natural and recycled building techniques in Toas, New Mexico, under the guidance of Michael Reynolds.  After very worthwhile learning and on-the-ground experiences, Nick opened Working With Nature Learning, Research, and Healing Center in late 2012. The center has both an urban and a rural demonstration/educational site which offers hands on experiences as well as class room learning. He teaches classes and speaks about permaculture and sustainable living all over Texas and is open to travel for out of town classes and/or consultancies. You can see Nick’s list of permaculture credentials at the Worldwide Permaculture Network.  His website is WorkingWithNature Nick Ferguson of Permaculture Classroom Nick Ferguson is a passionate and active permaculturist who is currently building his property into a Permaculture school called Permaculture Classroom.  Before earning his PDC and Earthworks Course certification  from Geoff Lawton, Nicholas grew up gardening, and his extended family was heavily into alternative agriculture. His grandfather Jerry Fridenstine was a teacher at many Acres USA conferences and worked closely with icons of sustainability like Charles Walters (Acres USA), Dr. Arden Anderson, Dr. Phil Callahan (Secret of the Ghost Moth), Dr. Reams (soil health & radionics), Dan Skow (Reams soil analysis), Dr. Christopher Bird (The Secret Life of plants, and The Secret Life of Soil) and many others. Nick was home educated with a heavy emphasis on biological systems and ecology.  He then went on to college where he studied Biology, Ecology, and Genetics, but with the state of the economy in ’08 and the dwindling job market, he decided to cut bait and get out before getting too far into debt. He went on to develop valuable real life skills while he worked in urban landscaping and horticulture for several years. Nick now manages and cares for a multi-million dollar estate  outside of a nearby metropolitan area. Nicholas’ real passion is teaching sustainable living systems and design, and for this reason he is building a Permaculture demonstration site, school, and sustainable farm.  Episode-1200- Sally Fallon of the Weston A Price Foundation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:15

TweetSally Fallon CoFounder of the Weston A Price Foundation. Journalist, chef, nutrition researcher, homemaker and community activist, Sally Fallon is the author of Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats. This well-researched, though-provoking guide to traditional foods contains a startling message: Animal fats and cholesterol are not villains but vital factors in the diet, necessary for normal growth, proper function of the brain and nervous system, protection from disease and optimum energy levels. Ms. Fallon’s lifelong interest in the subject of nutrition began in the early 1970s when she read Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price. Called the “Charles Darwin of Nutrition,” Price traveled the world over studying healthy primitive populations and their diets. The unforgettable photographs contained in his book document the beautiful facial structure and superb physiques of isolated groups consuming only whole, natural foods. Price noted that all of these diets contained a source of good quality animal fat, which provided numerous factors necessary for the full expression of our genetic potential and optimum health. Ms. Fallon applied the principles of the Price research to the feeding of her own children, and proved for herself that a diet rich in animal fats, and containing the protective factors in old fashioned foodstuffs like cod liver oil, liver and eggs, make for sturdy cheerful children with a high immunity to illness.  Episode-1199- Personal Libertarian Living Can it be Done | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:51

TweetMany Are Actually Terrified of Freedom! I call myself a personal libertarian.  What do I mean by that?  I mean that I simply accept society isn’t ready for some of the changes I have experienced in my life, they are not ready to be responsible for themselves.  Many people do want the governmetn to solve their problems. I have seen it and not just from people living on welfare and off government jobs.  I have had intelligent and fairly successful people look me strait in the eye and say things like, “well if the government isn’t there to pass laws and solve our problems why are they there”.  That is indeed a great question, one we will answer today. We will quickly though move from looking at how things should be to understanding how they are, from there we can determine how we can carve our own piece of libertarianism into our own lives. Some might ask, “is this a survival topic”, I would say indeed.  Firstly, it is a fact that many of us know what lies ahead, many of the things provided by government are going to fail in time, math says it is invertible.  The middle class is being systematically slaughtered.   At some point much of what we take for granted will not be available. When this happens a year of rice, beans and freeze dried food is a great asset but a finite one.  The reality is we all must begin a path to self sufficiency now, not wait for failure and then hope we have enough stuff stored up to make it until things return to normal.  There have been countless shifts in society, stabilization always follows eventually but thing never “return to normal” as that would mean returning to the way they were. There is no philosophy that leads faster to self reliance than libertarianism.  There is no time to wait for others on it either, the time is now, today’s episode discusses my steps to attaining a personal libertarian life. The Personal Libertarian Lifestyle Believe and do as you please (with in the law) Spread your belief by example, never with force Create independence from the systems Solve your own problems when ever you can, especially with neighbors If you vote, vote for what you believe in, not who you think can win Know why you believe what you believe Accept challenges to what you believe but require facts Never submit to government authority voluntarily (legally resist) Create your own systems, your own networks, etc. Value education and be a self directed learner at all times Let no man speak for you or put words in your mouth Accept that others many ignore, demean or attack you Debate ideas, do not ague the validity of the individual Remember no matter what anyone says, what you do matters Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom Get TSP Silver TSP Gear The Berkey Guy – (sponsor of the day) Win a Free Berkey Free State Project – (sponsor of the day) The Year 1199 Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1195- Ben Falk on The Resilient Farm and Homestead | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:26

TweetBen Falk of WholeSystemsDesign.com Ben developed Whole Systems Design, LLC as a land-based response to biological and cultural extinction and the increasing separation between people and elemental things. Life as a designer, builder, ecologist, tree-tender, and backcountry traveler continually informs Ben’s integrative approach to developing landscapes and buildings. His home landscape and the WSD studio site in Vermont’s Mad River Valley serve as a proving ground for the regenerative land developments featured in the projects of Whole Systems Design. Ben has studied architecture and landscape architecture at the graduate level and holds a master’s degree in land-use planning and design.  Episode-1192- Mike Haigwood on Mix Species Grass Based Dairy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:50

TweetA Happy and Healthy Jersey Cow at the P.A. Bowman Farmstead Mike Haigwood is currently the manager of  the P.A. Bowen Farmstead a mixed species dairy operation run by Sally Fallon.  Sally Fallon (who will be on TSP next week)  is the co-founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation along with nutritionist Mary G. Enig Mike grew up in rural Iowa three generations removed from Agriculture. He had an average childhood but always loved the outdoors.  Fast forward, he graduated 1986, tried college but didn’t like it, quit after one semester then started working. Mike then got a chance to work for a guy who started his own traditional lawn care business as a partner in the company, while short lived it started him down a new path. Mike then started school at Penn State University in 1990, got married and had a son and then graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor in Horticulture. He then moved to Mosurris working in the Kansas City area as a Landscape Designer for a Garden Center Chain. With the birth of his daugher and new concerns for nutrition his awakening began.  So in 1995 they moved back to Iowa started their own businesses lawn care, garden produce but ended up closing the business in 97.  In this short time Mike learned a lot about marketing, or the lack of it! At this point he started homesteading, homeschooling, and following the practices in the book Nourishing Traditions (by Sally Fallon) and began interning in the world of agriculture.  In time that led to “bootlegging raw milk” from their own farm.  While successful they grew tired of the dogma around conventioinal agriculture still present in the Midwest. So in 2009 they decided to move east and pursue alternative farming practices. He and his wife (Barb) met Sally Fallon at a conference in 2010 and asked if she knew anyone that could use a management team for their farm.  Her response was, “send me your resume” and now today the whole family is working on Sally’s Farm P.A. Bowen Farmstead.
