Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-819- Billy Joel’s Allentown – History Lesson, Prophecy or Both and was originally published on Jan 12, 2012. The following are the original show notes from that episode.. Today we are going to do something completely different and look at the old Billy Joel hit from 1982, “Allentown”. My hope is after you hear today’s show you will fully understand what I mean when I say, “history, prophecy or both” in regard to the song. Join me today as we discuss… What “closing the factories down” was actually like Why unemployment was a national problem but worse in the coal and steel regions What the song means when talks about “weekends at the Jersey shore” The “restlessness” that was handed down “Graduations hang on the wall” today they are college degrees vs. high school diplomas The multiple broken promises that generation experienced What “filling out forms, standing in lines” means to us today What “hard to stay” is really all about The true nature of the WWII generation post war prosperity How “one word plastics” from the movie “The Graduate” relates to this song What “the threw and American flag in our face” was all about How the “flag in the face” relates to today How this song is really about one of the massive shifts in the world How this generation got caught in this shift Some of the other massive shifts on the past 200 years The real nature of the current shift   Lyrics of the Song Allentown Well we’re living here in Allentown And they’re closing all the factories down Out in Bethlehem they’re killing time Filling out forms, standing in line Well our fathers fought the Second World War Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore Met our mothers at the USO Asked them to dance, danced with them slow And we’re living here in Allentown But the restlessness was handed down And it’s getting very hard to stay Well we’re waiting here in Allentown For the Pennsylvania we never found For the promises our teachers gave If we worked hard, if we behaved So the graduations hang on the wall But they never really helped us at all No they never taught us what was real Iron and coke, chromium steel And we’re waiting here in Allentown But they’ve taken all the coal from the ground And the union people crawled away Every child had a pretty good shot To get at least as far as their old man got Something happened on the way to that place They threw an American flag in our face Well, I’m living here in Allentown And it’s hard to keep a good man down But I won’t be getting up today And it’s getting very hard to stay And we’re living here in Allentown Resources for Today’s Show Members Support Brigade TSP Gear Shop Join Our Forum Video of the Version of Allentown I Played The Original Video of Allentown (really drives home the “American flag in our face” line) Clip I played from the movie “The Graduate”   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2599- Kurt Dugger on Paraglider Adventures and the Dark Horse Lodge | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:30

Kurt Dugger is a Former Infantry Marine turned paramotor pilot who decided to fly across the state of Tn to raise awareness and funds for The Darkhorse Lodge near Paris Tn.  Gretchen and Kirk Catherwood decided to start a retreat for combat veterans after losing their son (also a Marine) in Afghanistan.  To raise funds Kurt embarked on what he named, The Darkhorse450 an attempt by a low time pilot to cross TN using only a paramotor. His paramotor is a roughly a lawn chair with a propeller suspended under a fabric paraglider wing. He didn’t make it all the way on his first attempt but it was a hell of an adventure. Kurt’s effort raised a little over $3000 during the attempt.  He did this because he feels the Darkhorse Lodge might be one of the best tools to prevent veteran suicide he’s ever seen. It’s a group of 6 room cabins set back in the woods of TN. Guys can stay for free, build relationships with others and learn how to come home home again.   Kurt joins us today to discuss this worthy cause.  Episode-126- TSP Rewind – Using Logical Methods and Function Stacking for Decision Making | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:34:13

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-1707- Using Logical Methods and Function Stacking for Decision Making and was originally published on Jan 12, 2016. The following are the original show notes from that episode.. Yesterday’s show ran a theme of a penny saved is a tax free penny earned and how that compounds when invested outside the systems of taxation. I love this sort of individual liberation thinking. Then today I answered a question about a stove I mentioned last week. You can read about that here on the Nine Mile Farm Blog. The Most Powerful Computer in the World, but Only if Used. The basic take away is often you can acquire multiple items instead of an “all in one item” in doing so you will reduce or keep your cost the same while gettting greater functionality, flexibility, performance and redundancy. While some of this is common sense, it benefits us to look deeper than that. The reason is common sense is the application of knowledge. Most of us know it is common sense to use a Phillips screw driver on a Phillips screw, but if you didn’t know it existed, you would likely make best use of the most usable strait screw driver. To apply common sense the knowledge in that situation must be sufficient for the question or problem. And at times we can ask ourselves questions to remind us of what we know or help us to see what we do not know, so we know how to research the additional required knowledge. Join Me Today to Discuss… Why common sense isn’t so common How common sense is applied Evaluate the situation Consider the things you know Extrapolate what you don’t know based on knowledge and experience Proceed accordingly The question of a stove top vs. a stove top and oven and where it leads My new quail aviary and how it stacks functions but uses multiple components How to apply this thinking in your life Think before you act Do an elements analysis for most decisions Find ways that one thing or action can be multiplied How this leads to liberty Small actions alone are not enough to win the fight Properly assembled several small actions multiply their effect Waiting for a law to change may result in being old and dead first There is always a solution to almost any problem, people just get mentally lazy The fact that most are mentally lazy is an advantage for those who are not Every person is smart, but that is not enough Give three people a tool kit, compare the results It is about motivation, desire and application What you don’t design and control will be provided for you Final Thoughts   Join the MSB Today Want Every Episode of TSP Ever Produced?  Episode-125- TSP Rewind – 21 Unique Things I will be Growing this Year | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:08

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-2142- 21 Unique Things I will be Growing this Year and was originally published on Jan 9, 2018. The following are the original show notes from that episode.. Time for a fun show looking ahead to when all the ice and danger of heavy frost is gone. Last year I found some new gems and this year I am planning major grow bed expansion so I have found some new ideas and some old favorites to add to the 2018 planting list. Basically if you are a Gardner or grower or plant geek, today is a bit of plant porn for the winter cabin fever blues. I will be providing a link for all seeds, some will be to companies that are MSB partners, some to companies that offer things our partners do not and some even to Amazon or eBay because you just can’t get them any other way. My view with growing plants for food has always followed this guidelines in no particular order… Grow what you like to eat Grow what is expensive to buy Grow what you can’t buy or is hard to find Grow things that store well with little to no effort Grow things that are perennial or that self seed Grow things with more than one use Grow things that have little disease/pest pressure Grow honey badger plants (plants that just don’t give a shit) Grow things that allow you to interplant in layers Try a few new/weird things each year Grow things that are “super foods” Japanese Purple Sweet Potato and Cubanelle Peppers in my Aviary. Look any one of those is enough reason for me to grow something, frankly “because I effing feel like it”, is enough reason but the more check marks something gets, the more interested in growing it I become. Join Me Today As I Discuss… Why grow more than just the usual suspects My plant starting set up for this year Things I plant to grow this year and why Cubanelle Peppers – link Datil Peppers – link Lemon Drop Peppers – link Habnada Pepper – link Corbaci Pepper – link Hairy Gourd – link White Flowered Gourd – link Bitter Mellon – link Mouse Mellon – link Scarlet Runner Beans – link Red Noodle Beans – link Japanese Purple Sweet Potato – link Daikon Radish – link Tomatillo Verde – link Achocha – link Beets – (Baby recycled) – Just get them in a grocery store Zucchino Rampicante Squash (trombone zucchini) – link Orach – Mixed – link Bloody Dock – link New Zealand Spinach – link Hopi Red Amaranth – link   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2597 – No One Will Give you Anything in Life & That’s Great | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:01

We hear an awful lot about how entitled people have become, have you ever thought that just may be that is because people don’t know how great the alternative really is?  I mean really, despite all the promises government makes in general if your life is to be anything other than a basic existence you really are on your own. I am almost 50 and I remember believing in “the system” but I also now have decades to reflect on.  I have heard the promises for a very long time and I have looked at society and accepted that mostly, it really hasn’t changed, at all. Oh we have new gadgets, new problems, new opportunities, etc. but the people and their situation are mostly still the same.  Those who do the most, get the most.  Those that complain the most get the most attention but actually get very little in life.  Doers are so busy doing, growing and building they mostly ignore all the fighting and just get shit done. Have you ever really considered how great this is?  Today we talk about that and what it means for you. Join Us Today to Discuss… Why those in power never champion the individual unless it suits their goals Why those in power use division warfare, simply it works What almost 50 years have taught me about meritocracy, it ain’t always fair but it works in the end How bad would it be if people were just given what they want, especially with the state controlling it The lesson of the correlation between poverty and obesity in the modern world What you should do with this amazing gift Determine what you really want Determine what needs doing to get it Determine what stands in your way, design around it Largely ignore the shit flinging monkeys of society and politics Win Final Thoughts   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com Food Forest Farms Seven Seas of Rhye – Queen   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2595 – Projects for Home Learning for Wanna Be Home Schoolers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:52

As you guys know, I am a massive fan of homeschooling, but it is not for everyone.  What I do feel should be for all concerned parents and grand parents though is as much self directed learning as possible.  I just started a project with my Grandson today.  Here is how it is working. Every day when he comes over I will give him a word, he must learn to define the word and spell it. He must be able to explain the concept to the point where I know he understands it.  Any words that come up in the discussion he doesn’t understand also must be looked up and learned enough that the original word can be well mastered. He is doing this for school and the lists he gets for this are pretty low level. My words are more challenging. Each group will have a theme, the first theme is powerful words.  Today’s word was initiative, the discussion lead to him also having to learn what the word concept really meant. It led to the main lesson being, people who get shit done get what they want in life. To turbo charge this I crowd sourced ideas for more power words today on my facebook page, check it out here. That got me thinking why not crowd source the entire concept for a show, not just the individual project.  So I did another post, this one in the TSP forum asking for ideas for other such project.  Today we cover some of the ones suggested. Join Me Today to Discuss… Teaching should first focus on how to learn Some ideas for projects My word of the day project that started all this Meal prep from concept to recipe to procurement to execution to serving Kiwi Crate Projects – new one on me, website for this here Restoring or refinishing a older piece of furniture Books like Back Yard Ballistics, the Dangerous Book for Boys, The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science, an American Boy’s Handy Book, etc. The Boy Scout Merit Badge Books even for non scouts just for ideas Developing a budget to obtain a goal Developing a product for sale Build a Fox Hole radio – link about them Learning to meditate, reflect, relax, be patient, etc. Develop a home automation solution – they will quickly be better than you at it Develop a lesson to teach you Final thoughts – build in the process of learning so that it becomes second nature   Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com The Granddaddy’s Gun Club I Want to Break Free – Queen   Sponsors of the Day Free State Project Western Botanicals   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2592- Integrating Nature into Our Lives | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:54

There are a lot of terms for this type of thinking.  A very popular one is rewilding.  Yesterday in my interview with Reed Richard we discussed it as the concept of a biophilic approach to life.  We are going to expand on that today because yesterday’s show really made me want to come at this from a different angle than we covered it from yesterday. Our guest yesterday was very big on the spiritual side of this and on what can only be called an “alternative lifestyle”.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but the average person is simply not going to do it, not as a full on way of living at least. The biophilic hypothesis is simply that that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. To me the fact that this is a hypothesis shows that science is in many ways disconnected from the reality it hopes to explain.  If people were not naturally biophilic the garden industry alone would not be valued at over 300 billion a year in the US.  The pet market would not be over 60 billion.  We would not have zoos, parks, arboretums, etc. in every major city, etc. Camping would not be one of the most popular pastimes in America.  Nor would hunting or fishing.  There would be no arbor day society, no Permaculture movement, no back to the land mentality that pops up generation after generation in America.  There would not be a youtube channel on keeping tropical fish with over a million subscribers or one on fricken ants with 3.3 million.  No I am not kidding either it is called AntsCanada.  Old men like me would not remember Marlin Perkins so fondly and our now grown children would not remember how they felt when the Crocodile Hunter lost his life doing what he loved. No one would know the name Jacques Cousteau or say Henry David Thoreau.  The thousands of songs about nature would never have been written.  National Geographic would not exist and parks like Sea World would not draw millions of visitors per year.  I could go on but you get the point.  It is no hypothesis that humans seek to bond with natural systems it is bluntly a fact as scientific as any could be.  Yet at the same time we have become quite disconnected.  Today we talk about ways to design nature back into our lives. Join Me Today To Discuss…. Quote of the Day – “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you”. ~ Frank Lloyd Wright Why humans are a biophilic species How lawns as bad as they are prove we crave nature How our obsession with pets and live stock plays into this How this all fits with the Permaculture ethos of “the forest is the teacher” How we can bring more nature into our schools How we can bring more nature into our homes How we can bring more nature into our work places My thoughts on how space exploration may put us more deeply in touch with this concept Some things we do as homesteaders and how they are biophilic Soil based gardening Wilderness adventure, camping, hiking, etc. Foraging Fishing and Hunting Hydroponics Fermentation Animal Husbandry In the end, do we even have a choice if this is innately human   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com The Stranger – Billy Joel   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2590- Building a Business in 2020 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:39

One of the topics I have been strong on since 2008 when I started TSP that is honestly unique in the preparedness world is entrepreneurship.  Many take the view that since it is “all going to collapse”, why would you bother.  Frankly that is a beyond myopic view, at TSP we don’t only plan for things to go wrong, we plan for them to go right as well. Perhaps it is that I did a lot of my growing up in the 80s.  Back then there was still a real feeling that some day the nuclear missiles were going to wipe us all out anyway.  It was a huge part of the hyper consumerism driven by debt that took over in that decade.  Why worry, why not just party like it was 1999 and the bombs were gonna drop on Y2K.  To be blunt how’d that work out for those that did it? We prepare for disaster around here based on the probability index, a term I coined in 2008 that means the lower the number of individuals effected by a disaster the more likely you as an individual are to experience it.  Individual and family level disasters include job loss, fire in your home, serious illness, death of an immediate family member, etc.  While things like the Corona Virus get the media attention, it is individual disasters that touch the most lives the most frequently. So we prep in this order. individual/family – neighborhood – region – state – national – global We do this because one thing people were right about in the cold war, if an all out nuclear war took place it likely would not have mattered what you did.  However if you are going to prep for the total end of the world, you may want to be prepared for the end of just your individual world first. No step can do more to insulate you from individual disaster than an income independent of the whims of a boss or corporation. Join Me Today to Discuss… The two primary types of business today (lifestyle and conventional) The two primary types of products today (non phyical/service and phyical product) The two primary things you can sell to (wants or needs) Why much of what people think about these three things are wrong Finding your business model What are you good at, great at What do you love What do you suck at How much time do you really have Is this even right for you, it is not right for everyone Things you do need today if you are going to be in business A website A solid brand story A social media presence A product delivery solution An over the top work ethic The ability to improvise, adapt and overcome A realistic understanding of the value of your market or at least numbers required on your end A plan to scale or an acceptance of a scaling limitation Final Thoughts – The other option is financial independence via saving, investing and life style design   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com Wasted on the Way – Crosby, Stills and Nash   Sponsors of the Day Free State Project Western Botanicals   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
