Security to the Bone! He currently works as a sheriff deputy in Florida and has been a professional dog trainer for over 10 years.  He is the founder and Owner of Dunetos K-9, Dunetos Fitness and Dunetos Security. Join  Joel and I Today as we Discuss… How Joel’s methods differ from other dog trainers out there Why anyone interested in preparedness and security should consider a dog What does the dog bring specifically from a stand point of preparedness The minimum dog training for any dog owner interested in security Is it dangerous to train a dog for security purposes How training is often simply bringing out controlling and channeling natural instinct Different training for different rolls, home security, patrol dogs, livestock protection, etc. How a dog can be trained to “track your children” by name The best breeds and sizes for all around security and different roles Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade TSP Gear Shop Join Our Forum ShelfReliance.com – (sponsor of the day) Silver and Gold Shop – (sponsor of the day) Dunetos K-9 Dunetos Fitness Dunetos Security Baden K-9 (the other trainers mentioned by Joel) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-920- Building Self Reliance in Our Children | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:15

After I answered a question by John from West Virginia on Friday’s show I have received a ton of email asking me to do a full show devoted to teaching our children self sufficiency and self reliance. I am going to do that show today but I want to point something out.  I am not nor do I claim to be a parenting expert.  I simply have had the honor of serving as a step father to a great kid who now has grown into a fine young man.  I think Dorothy and I did a great job, much of what I share today will be what we did, however, much will be what we didn’t learn until we did it wrong first. Parenting is a skill like any other skill, you yourself grow in knowledge overtime and will likely have reached the pinnacle of your parenting skill set at the point where you kids no longer require it of you, why do you think kids are generally so fond of grandparents? Join Me Today As We Discuss… My limitation, no real experience in the kindergarten and back years Understanding “growth” and that it takes time Working with your children, not judging their “progress” on the “progress” of others Rules we brought up our son with As you grown you should end up with less rules every year If you cry for something you don’t get it period You are expected to pitch in around the house Allowance is a paycheck, it also is a two way street Never lie to us, you will need our trust some day When I ask you what you think about something, IDK isn’t an answer We never buy anything of consequence with out a thinking period first Saving money is important, so is giving it away When you make a bad choice it is your fault and your responsibility to make it right You can have anything but not everything you want Life isn’t fair, it isn’t supposed to be, oh and likely you don’t want things to be fair either We always have your back, always Things I would suggest any parent consider in raising their children They are small growing people not dolls to be dressed or clay to be formed Their opinions should be heard and matter even when not followed You child needs to be sad, mad, upset, hurt and unhappy at times If they say they can do it themselves, shut up and let them try Don’t put them in sports where “everybody wins” Teach them to value education and don’t lie about the value of school Remember what you do is more important than what you say Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum The Berkey Guy – (sponsor of the day) Fortress Defense Consultants – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-917- 11 Common Gardening, Permaculture and Homesteading Questions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:42

Polyculture is Often the Answer When I speak or do videos or even do a podcast there are common questions that always seem to pop up. Given that is the case I figure most people could learn from at least a few of them, so today’s show is dedicated to answering some of the more common ones and a few of the more complex ones. My feeling is that in many instances people over think some of these issues and in other areas many people simply under think them. In many ways we simply need to understand that nature knows what she is doing, on the other hand we need to understand nature so we can best channel the existing energies. Join Me Today As I Answer…. Is it really best to grow from seed or start plants as seedlings If you do hugelkultur does it mean you never have to water How long does the wood “last” with hugelkultur How can I do contour based design if my land it totally flat How do I deal with clay soil, sandy soil, etc. Do swales become “weed beds” once established Do you need to inoculate soil to encourage fungal activity How do you know when to practice “chop and drop” in your climate In a 7 layer forest system how do herbs and ground covers obtain enough solar exposure How do I develop a “seed mix” for my climate, region, need, etc. The big ones, “but what if” and “can I” Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade TSP Copper Join Our Forum Sawtooth Tactical – (sponsor of the day) Ready Made Resources – (sponsor of the day) My Permaculture Principles Video Series on Youtube Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-916- Anthony Veltri Author of Katrina A Journey of Hope | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:25

Anthony Veltri - Author, Scientist and Trainer Anthony Veltri served as a lead physical scientist in charge of the Department of Homeland Security’s iCAV geospatial system and 24×7 geospatial mapping production center which is charged with map production for a variety of natural and man made incidents. In short, if it made the front page of CNN.com and it had the potential to impact the nation’s critical infrastructure and key resources, chances are, his team made geospatial products for it. He is a long time listener to TSP podcasts and an avid lurker on the forum. He is also the author of Katrina – A Journey of Hope, which recounts his experience as a member of the Rhode Island Urban Search and Rescue Task Force during their deployment to the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Anthony joins us today to discuss what being versatile can mean for you in a disaster situation, both during the disaster and long-term. What to expect and how to interact with emergency services professionals. He feels his experience in the Gulf Coast after the Landfall of Hurricane Katrina needs to benefit someone other than me and he wants to make sure people have good information to keep themselves safe. He will also discuss his experience in working in the technology sector with government employment and contracting and how young graduates can gain a competitive advantage in some non traditional ways.  Along with how 30-40 year olds caught in the middle of current technology migrations can adapt to change and continue to compete and excel.  Episode-910- Mike Canaday on Grazing Goats, Electric Fencing and Working Dogs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:51

Properly Managed Goats Improve Soil Mike Canaday has 30 years experience in ranching and training Border Collies and Guardian Dogs to work with and protect livestock. Goat grazing is a cost effective, ecologically sound way to clear land and promote growth of native grasses and beneficial plants, particularly for large acreages and difficult terrain. It has been proven to efficiently handle areas that are inaccessible or difficult to manage with mowers, areas where burns are inadvisable, and sensitive areas where the application of herbicides is not appropriate. The crazy thing is even if you don’t own a lot of land you could still own a lot of goats.  With advances in portable electric fences, the goats ability to forage land unsuitable for cattle, the cost effectiveness over mowing or herbicides and their ability to improve soil, many people actually pay to have goats graze their lands. Mike Joins Us Today To Discuss… Getting started with sheep and goats Why sheep and goats, why not cattle How to properly use electric fencing for predator protection and paddock shifting What to look for in an electric fence How much power a fence needs to be effective and what can cause power loss Using dogs for both working and protecting your live stock How you get other people to pay you to put your goats on their land Finding properties that will be usable for your herds Why some people say “electric fencing doesn’t work” and why they are wrong Scaling goat grazing up and down based on property size and needs Keeping dogs fierce enough to protect a herd by still sociable when not “on duty” Channeling instinct in a dog vs. relying on their “intelligence” Dogs for homestead security Resources for Today’s Show Members Support Brigade TSP Copper Join Our Forum Sawtooth Tactical – (sponsor of the day) Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) California Grazing – Mike’s Website CowDog.org Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
